Proverbs 17:1Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife. Better a bit of dry bread in peace, than a house full of feasting and violent behaviour.Better is a dry morsel with quietness, Than a house full of feasting with strife.Better [is] a dry morsel, and rest with it, Than a house full of the sacrifices of strife.
Proverbs 17:2A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren. A servant who does wisely will have rule over a son causing shame, and will have his part in the heritage among brothers.A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame, And shall have a part in the inheritance among the brothers.A wise servant ruleth over a son causing shame, And in the midst of brethren He apportioneth an inheritance.
Proverbs 17:3The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts. The heating-pot is for silver and the oven-fire for gold, but the Lord is the tester of hearts.The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, But Yahweh tests the hearts.A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And the trier of hearts [is] Jehovah.
Proverbs 17:4An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; [And] a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue. A wrongdoer gives attention to evil lips, and a man of deceit gives ear to a damaging tongue.An evil-doer gives heed to wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.An evil doer is attentive to lips of vanity, Falsehood is giving ear to a mischievous tongue.
Proverbs 17:5Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; [And] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished. Whoever makes sport of the poor puts shame on his Maker; and he who is glad because of trouble will not go free from punishment.Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.Whoso is mocking at the poor Hath reproached his Maker, Whoso is rejoicing at calamity is not acquitted.
Proverbs 17:6Children's children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers. Children's children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their fathers.Children's children are the crown of old men; The glory of children are their parents.Sons` sons [are] the crown of old men, And the glory of sons [are] their fathers.
Proverbs 17:7Excellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince. Fair words are not to be looked for from a foolish man, much less are false lips in a ruler.Arrogant speech isn't fitting for a fool, Much less do lying lips fit a prince.Not comely for a fool is a lip of excellency, Much less for a noble a lip of falsehood.
Proverbs 17:8A bribe is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth. An offering of money is like a stone of great price in the eyes of him who has it: wherever he goes, he does well.A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; Wherever he turns, he prospers.A stone of grace [is] the bribe in the eyes of its possessors, Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
Proverbs 17:9He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends. He who keeps a sin covered is looking for love; but he who keeps on talking of a thing makes division between friends.He who covers an offense promotes love; But he who repeats a matter separates chief friends.Whoso is covering transgression is seeking love, And whoso is repeating a matter Is separating a familiar friend.
Proverbs 17:10A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool. A word of protest goes deeper into one who has sense than a hundred blows into a foolish man.A rebuke enters deeper into one who has understanding Than a hundred lashes into a fool.Rebuke cometh down on the intelligent More than a hundred stripes on a fool.
Proverbs 17:11An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him. An uncontrolled man is only looking for trouble, so a cruel servant will be sent against him.An evil man seeks only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.An evil man seeketh only rebellion, And a fierce messenger is sent against him.
Proverbs 17:12Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly. It is better to come face to face with a bear whose young ones have been taken away than with a foolish man acting foolishly.Let a bear robbed of her cubs meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.The meeting of a bereaved bear by a man, And not a fool in his folly.
Proverbs 17:13Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house. If anyone gives back evil for good, evil will never go away from his house.Whoever rewards evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.Whoso is returning evil for good, Evil moveth not from his house.
Proverbs 17:14The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling. The start of fighting is like the letting out of water: so give up before it comes to blows.The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, Therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.The beginning of contention [is] a letting out of waters, And before it is meddled with leave the strife.
Proverbs 17:15He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah. He who gives a decision for the evil-doer and he who gives a decision against the upright, are equally disgusting to the Lord.He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.Whoso is justifying the wicked, And condemning the righteous, Even both of these [are] an abomination to Jehovah.
Proverbs 17:16Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding? How will money in the hand of the foolish get him wisdom, seeing that he has no sense?Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he has no understanding?Why [is] this a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, And a heart there is none?
Proverbs 17:17A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity. A friend is loving at all times, and becomes a brother in times of trouble.A friend loves at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.At all times is the friend loving, And a brother for adversity is born.
Proverbs 17:18A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor. A man without sense gives his hand in an agreement, and makes himself responsible before his neighbour.A man void of understanding strikes hands, And becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.A man lacking heart is striking hands, A surety he becometh before his friend.
Proverbs 17:19He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction. The lover of fighting is a lover of sin: he who makes high his doorway is looking for destruction.He who loves disobedience loves strife. One who builds a high gate seeks destruction.Whoso is loving transgression is loving debate, Whoso is making high his entrance is seeking destruction.
Proverbs 17:20He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief. Nothing good comes to him whose heart is fixed on evil purposes: and he who has an evil tongue will come to trouble.One who has a perverse heart doesn't find prosperity, And one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.The perverse of heart findeth not good, And the turned in his tongue falleth into evil.
Proverbs 17:21He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy. He who has an unwise son gets sorrow for himself, and the father of a foolish son has no joy.He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.Whoso is begetting a fool hath affliction for it, Yea, the father of a fool rejoiceth not.
Proverbs 17:22A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones. A glad heart makes a healthy body, but a crushed spirit makes the bones dry.A cheerful heart makes good medicine, But a crushed spirit dries up the bones.A rejoicing heart doth good to the body, And a smitten spirit drieth the bone.
Proverbs 17:23A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice. A sinner takes an offering out of his robe, to get a decision for himself in a cause.A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, To pervert the ways of justice.A bribe from the bosom the wicked taketh, To turn aside the paths of judgment.
Proverbs 17:24Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth. Wisdom is before the face of him who has sense; but the eyes of the foolish are on the ends of the earth.Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.The face of the intelligent [is] to wisdom, And the eyes of a fool at the end of the earth.
Proverbs 17:25A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him. A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitter pain to her who gave him birth.A foolish son brings grief to his father, And bitterness to her who bore him.A provocation to his father [is] a foolish son, And bitterness to her that bare him.
Proverbs 17:26Also to punish the righteous is not good, [Nor] to smite the noble for [their] uprightness. To give punishment to the upright is not good, or to give blows to the noble for their righteousness.Also to punish the righteous is not good, Nor to flog officials for their integrity.Also, to fine the righteous is not good, To smite nobles for uprightness.
Proverbs 17:27He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding. He who has knowledge says little: and he who has a calm spirit is a man of good sense.He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.One acquainted with knowledge is sparing his words, And the cool of temper [is] a man of understanding.
Proverbs 17:28Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent. Even the foolish man, when he keeps quiet, is taken to be wise: when his lips are shut he is credited with good sense.Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.Even a fool keeping silence is reckoned wise, He who is shutting his lips intelligent!
