| Ecclesiastes 2:1 | I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also was vanity. | I said in my heart, I will give you joy for a test; so take your pleasure but it was to no purpose. | I said in my heart, `Pray, come, I try thee with mirth, and look thou on gladness;` and lo, even it [is] vanity. | I said in my heart: I will go, and abound with delights, and enjoy good things. And I saw that this also was vanity. |
| Ecclesiastes 2:2 | I said of laughter, It is mad; and of mirth, What doeth it? | Of laughing I said, It is foolish; and of joy What use is it? | Of laughter I said, `Foolish!` and of mirth, `What [is] this it is doing?` | Laughter I counted error: and to mirth I said: Why art thou vainly deceived? |
| Ecclesiastes 2:3 | I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding [me] with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their life. | I made a search with my heart to give pleasure to my flesh with wine, still guiding my heart with wisdom, and to go after foolish things, so that I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under the heavens all the days of their life. | I have sought in my heart to draw out with wine my appetite, (and my heart leading in wisdom), and to take hold on folly till that I see where [is] this the good to the sons of man of that which they do under the heavens, the number of the days of their lives. | I thought in my heart, to withdraw my flesh from wine, that I might turn my mind to wisdom, and might avoid folly, till I might see what was profitable for the children of men: and what they ought to do under the sun, all the days of their life. |

| Ecclesiastes 2:13 | Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. | Then I saw that wisdom is better than foolish ways as the light is better than the dark. | And I saw that there is an advantage to wisdom above folly, like the advantage of the light above the darkness. | And I saw that wisdom excelled folly, as much as light differeth from darkness. |

This again is to no purpose. | And who knoweth whether he is wise or foolish? yet he doth rule over all my labour that I have laboured at, and that I have done wisely under the sun! this also [is] vanity. | Whom I know not whether he will be a wise man or a fool, and he shall have rule over all my labours with which I have laboured and been solicitous: and is there any thing so vain? |

| Ecclesiastes 2:23 | For all his days are [but] sorrows, and his travail is grief; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity. | All his days are sorrow, and his work is full of grief. Even in the night his heart has no rest. This again is to no purpose. | For all his days are sorrows, and his travail sadness; even at night his heart hath not lain down; this also [is] vanity. | All his days axe full of sorrows and miseries, even in the night he doth not rest in mind: and is not this vanity? |

| Ecclesiastes 2:26 | For to the man that pleaseth him [God] giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that pleaseth God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. | To the man with whom he is pleased, God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the work of getting goods together and storing up wealth, to give to him in whom God has pleasure. This again is to no purpose and desire for wind. | For to a man who [is] good before Him, He hath given wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; and to a sinner He hath given travail, to gather and to heap up, to give to the good before God. Even this [is] vanity and vexation of spirit. | God hath given to a man that is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he hath given vexation, and superfluous care, to heap up and to gather together, and to give it to him that hath pleased God: but this also is vanity, and a fruitless solicitude of the mind. |
