Psalms 73:1Surely God is good to Israel, [Even] to such as are pure in heart. Understanding for Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast us off unto the end: why is thy wrath enkindled against the sheep of thy pasture?Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart.
Psalms 73:2But as for me, my feet were almost gone; My steps had well nigh slipped. Remember thy congregation, which thou hast possessed from the beginning. The sceptre of thy inheritance which thou hast redeemed: mount Sion in which thou hast dwelt. But as for me, my feet were almost gone. My steps had nearly slipped.
Psalms 73:3For I was envious at the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Lift up thy hands against their pride unto the end; see what things the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary. For I was envious of the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
Psalms 73:4For there are no pangs in their death; But their strength is firm. And they that hate thee have made their boasts, in the midst of thy solemnity. They have set up their ensigns for signs,For there are no struggles in their death, But their strength is firm.
Psalms 73:5They are not in trouble as [other] men; Neither are they plagued like [other] men. and they knew not both in the going out and on the highest top. As with axes in a wood of trees,They are free from burdens of men, Neither are they plagued like other men.
Psalms 73:6Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; Violence covereth them as a garment. they have cut down at once the gates thereof, with axe and hatchet they have brought it down. Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment.
Psalms 73:7Their eyes stand out with fatness: They have more than heart could wish. They have set fire to thy sanctuary: they have defiled the dwelling place of thy name on the earth.Their eyes bulge with fat. Their minds pass the limits of conceit.
Psalms 73:8They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression: They speak loftily. They said in their heart, the whole kindred of them together: Let us abolish all the festival days of God from the land. They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression.
Psalms 73:9They have set their mouth in the heavens, And their tongue walketh through the earth. Our signs we have not seen, there is now no prophet: and he will know us no more. They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth.
Psalms 73:10Therefore his people return hither: And waters of a full [cup] are drained by them. How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach: is the adversary to provoke thy name for ever? Therefore their people return to them, And they drink up waters of abundance.
Psalms 73:11And they say, How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High? Why dost thou turn away thy hand: and thy right hand out of the midst of thy bosom for ever ?They say, "How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?"
Psalms 73:12Behold, these are the wicked; And, being alway at ease, they increase in riches. But God is our king before ages: he hath wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.Behold, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches.
Psalms 73:13Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocency; Thou by thy strength didst make the sea firm: thou didst crush the heads of the dragons in the waters.Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocence,
Psalms 73:14For all the day long have I been plagued, And chastened every morning. Thou hast broken the heads of the dragon: thou hast given him to be meat for the people of the Ethiopians. For all day long have I been plagued, And punished every morning.
Psalms 73:15If I had said, I will speak thus; Behold, I had dealt treacherously with the generation of thy children. Thou hast broken up the fountains and the torrents: thou hast dried up the Ethan rivers. If I had said, "I will speak thus;" Behold, I would have betrayed the generation of your children.
Psalms 73:16When I thought how I might know this, It was too painful for me; Thine is the day, and thine is the night: thou hast made the morning light and the sun.When I tried to understand this, It was too painful for me;
Psalms 73:17Until I went into the sanctuary of God, And considered their latter end. Thou hast made all the borders of the earth: the summer and the spring were formed by thee.Until I entered God's sanctuary, And considered their latter end.
Psalms 73:18Surely thou settest them in slippery places: Thou castest them down to destruction. Remember this, the enemy hath reproached the Lord: and a foolish people hath provoked thy name.Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction.
Psalms 73:19How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to thee: and forget not to the end the souls of thy poor. How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.
Psalms 73:20As a dream when one awaketh, So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image. Have regard to thy covenant: for they that are the obscure of the earth have been filled with dwellings of iniquity. As a dream when one wakes up, So, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.
Psalms 73:21For my soul was grieved, And I was pricked in my heart: Let not the humble be turned away with confusion: the poor and needy shall praise thy name. For my soul was grieved. I was embittered in my heart.
Psalms 73:22So brutish was I, and ignorant; I was [as] a beast before thee. Arise, O God, judge thy own cause: remember thy reproaches with which the foolish man hath reproached thee all the day.I was so senseless and ignorant. I was a brute beast before you.
Psalms 73:23Nevertheless I am continually with thee: Thou hast holden my right hand. Forget not the voices of thy enemies: the pride of them that hate thee ascendeth continually.Nevertheless, I am continually with you. You have held my right hand.
Psalms 73:24Thou wilt guide me with thy counsel, And afterward receive me to glory. You will guide me with your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory.
Psalms 73:25Whom have I in heaven [but thee]? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee. Who do I have in heaven? There is no one on earth who I desire besides you.
Psalms 73:26My flesh and my heart faileth; [But] God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. My flesh and my heart fails, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalms 73:27For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: Thou hast destroyed all them that play the harlot, [departing] from thee. For, behold, those who are far from you shall perish. You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to you.
Psalms 73:28But it is good for me to draw near unto God: I have made the Lord Jehovah my refuge, That I may tell of all thy works. Psalm 74 Maschil of Asaph. But it is good for me to come close to God. I have made the Lord Yahweh my refuge, That I may tell of all your works. Psalm 74 A contemplation by Asaph.
