2nd-Corinthians 12:1I must needs glory, though it is not expedient; but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I am compelled to boast. It is not a profitable employment, but I will proceed to visions and revelations granted me by the Lord.To boast, really, is not profitable for me, for I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.If I must glory (it is not expedient indeed): but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
2nd-Corinthians 12:2I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I know not; or whether out of the body, I know not; God knoweth), such a one caught up even to the third heaven. I know a Christian man who fourteen years ago whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know; God knows was caught up (this man of whom I am speaking) even to the highest Heaven.I have known a man in Christ, fourteen years ago whether in the body I have not known, whether out of the body I have not known, God hath known such an one being caught away unto the third heaven;I know a man in Christ above fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I know not, or out of the body, I know not; God knoweth), such a one caught up to the third heaven.
2nd-Corinthians 12:3And I know such a man (whether in the body, or apart from the body, I know not; God knoweth), And I know that this man whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know;and I have known such a man whether in the body, whether out of the body, I have not known, God hath known,And I know such a man (whether in the body, or out of the body, I know not: God knoweth):
2nd-Corinthians 12:4how that he was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. God knows was caught up into Paradise and heard unspeakable things which no human being is permitted to repeat.that he was caught away to the paradise, and heard unutterable sayings, that it is not possible for man to speak. That he was caught up into paradise, and heard secret words, which it is not granted to man to utter.
2nd-Corinthians 12:5On behalf of such a one will I glory: but on mine own behalf I will not glory, save in [my] weaknesses. Of such a one I will boast; but of myself I will not boast, except in my weaknesses.Of such an one I will boast, and of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities,For such an one I will glory; but for myself I will glory nothing, but in my infirmities.
2nd-Corinthians 12:6For if I should desire to glory, I shall not be foolish; for I shall speak the truth: but I forbear, lest any man should account of me above that which he seeth me [to be], or heareth from me. If however I should choose to boast, I should not be a fool for so doing, for I should be speaking the truth. But I forbear, lest any one should be led to estimate me more highly than what his own eyes attest, or more highly than what he hears from my lips.for if I may wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for truth I will say; but I forebear, lest any one in regard to me may think anything above what he doth see me, or doth hear anything of me;For though I should have a mind to glory, I shall not be foolish; for I will say the truth. But I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth in me, or any thing he heareth from me.
2nd-Corinthians 12:7And by reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted overmuch, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, that I should not be exalted overmuch. And judging by the stupendous grandeur of the revelations therefore lest I should be over-elated there has been sent to me, like the agony of impalement, Satan's angel dealing blow after blow, lest I should be over-elated.and that by the exceeding greatness of the revelations I might not be exalted overmuch, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of the Adversary, that he might buffet me, that I might not be exalted overmuch. And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me, there was given me a sting of my flesh, an angel of Satan, to buffet me.
2nd-Corinthians 12:8Concerning this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. As for this, three times have I besought the Lord to rid me of him;Concerning this thing thrice the Lord did I call upon, that it might depart from me,For which thing thrice I besought the Lord, that it might depart from me.
2nd-Corinthians 12:9And he hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for [my] power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. but His reply has been, "My grace suffices for you, for power matures in weakness." Most gladly therefore will I boast of my infirmities rather than complain of them in order that Christ's power may overshadow me.and He said to me, `Sufficient for thee is My grace, for My power in infirmity is perfected;` most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of the Christ may rest on me:And he said to me: My grace is sufficient for thee; for power is made perfect in infirmity. Gladly therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
2nd-Corinthians 12:10Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. In fact I take pleasure in infirmities, in the bearing of insults, in distress, in persecutions, in grievous difficulties for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.wherefore I am well pleased in infirmities, in damages, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ; for whenever I am infirm, then I am powerful; For which cause I please myself in my infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ. For when I am weak, then am I powerful.
2nd-Corinthians 12:11I am become foolish: ye compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I am nothing. It is foolish of me to write all this, but you have compelled me to do so. Why, you ought to have been my vindicators; for in no respect have I been inferior to these superlatively great Apostles, even though in myself I am nothing.I have become a fool boasting; ye ye did compel me; for I ought by you to have been commended, for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles even if I am nothing.I am become foolish: you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you: for I have no way come short of them that are above measure apostles, although I be nothing.
2nd-Corinthians 12:12Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, by signs and wonders and mighty works. The signs that characterize the true Apostle have been done among you, accompanied by unwearied fortitude, and by tokens and marvels and displays of power. The signs, indeed, of the apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds,Yet the signs of my apostleship have been wrought on you, in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
2nd-Corinthians 12:13For what is there wherein ye were made inferior to the rest of the churches, except [it be] that I myself was not a burden to you? forgive me this wrong. In what respect, therefore, have you been worse dealt with than other Churches, except that I myself never hung as a dead weight upon you? Forgive the injustice I thus did you!for what is there in which ye were inferior to the rest of the assemblies, except that I myself was not a burden to you? forgive me this injustice! For what is there that you have had less than the other churches, but that I myself was not burthensome to you? Pardon me this injury.
2nd-Corinthians 12:14Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be a burden to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. See, I am now for the third time prepared to visit you, but I will not be a dead weight to you. I desire not your money, but yourselves; for children ought not to put by for their parents, but parents for their children.Lo, a third time I am ready to come unto you, and I will not be a burden to you, for I seek not yours, but you, for the children ought not for the parents to lay up, but the parents for the children,Behold now the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burthensome unto you. For I seek not the things that are yours, but you. For neither ought the children to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
2nd-Corinthians 12:15And I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less? And as for me, most gladly will I spend all I have and be utterly spent for your salvation.and I most gladly will spend and be entirely spent for your souls, even if, more abundantly loving you, less I am loved. But I most gladly will spend and be spent myself for your souls; although loving you more, I be loved less.
2nd-Corinthians 12:16But be it so, I did not myself burden you; but, being crafty, I caught you with guile. If I love you so intensely, am I the less to be loved? Be that as it may: I was not a burden to you. But being by no means scrupulous, I entrapped you, they say!And be it [so], I I did not burden you, but being crafty, with guile I did take you;But be it so: I did not burthen you: but being crafty, I caught you by guile.
2nd-Corinthians 12:17Did I take advantage of you by any one of them whom I have sent unto you? Have I gained any selfish advantage over you through any one of the messengers I have sent to you?any one of those whom I have sent unto you by him did I take advantage of you?Did I overreach you by any of them whom I sent to you?
2nd-Corinthians 12:18I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? walked we not in the same spirit? [walked we] not in the same steps? I begged Titus to visit you, and sent our other brother with him. Did Titus gain any selfish advantage over you? Were not he and I guided by one and the same Spirit, and did we not walk in the same steps?I entreated Titus, and did send with [him] the brother; did Titus take advantage of you? in the same spirit did we not walk? did we not in the same steps?I desired Titus, and I sent with him a brother. Did Titus overreach you? Did we not walk with the same spirit? did we not in the same steps?
2nd-Corinthians 12:19Ye think all this time that we are excusing ourselves unto you. In the sight of God speak we in Christ. But all things, beloved, [are] for your edifying. You are imagining, all this time, that we are making our defense at your bar. In reality it is as in God's presence and in communion with Christ that we speak; but, dear friends, it is all with a view to your progress in goodness.Again, think ye that to you we are making defence? before God in Christ do we speak; and the all things, beloved, [are] for your up-building,Of old, think you that we excuse ourselves to you? We speak before God in Christ; but all things, my dearly beloved, for your edification.
2nd-Corinthians 12:20For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should find you not such as I would, and should myself be found of you such as ye would not; lest by any means [there should be] strife, jealousy, wraths, factions, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults; For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may not find you to be what I desire, and that you may find me to be what you do not desire; that perhaps there may be contention, jealousy, bitter feeling, party spirit, ill-natured talk, backbiting, undue eulogy, unrest;for I fear lest, having come, not such as I wish I may find you, and I I may be found by you such as ye do not wish, lest there be strifes, envyings, wraths, revelries, evil-speakings, whisperings, puffings up, insurrections,For I fear lest perhaps when I come I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found by you such as you would not. Lest perhaps contentions, envyings, animosities, dissensions, detractions, whisperings, swellings, seditions, be among you.
2nd-Corinthians 12:21lest again when I come my God should humble me before you, and I should mourn for many of them that have sinned heretofore, and repented not of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they committed. and that upon re-visiting you I may be humbled by my God in your presence, and may have to mourn over many whose hearts still cling to their old sins, and who have not repented of the impurity, fornication, and gross sensuality, of which they have been guilty.lest again having come, my God may humble me in regard to you, and I may bewail many of those having sinned before, and not having reformed concerning the uncleanness, and whoredom, and lasciviousness, that they did practise.Lest again, when I come, God humble me among you: and I mourn many of them that sinned before, and have not done penance for the uncleanness, and fornication, and lasciviousness, that they have committed.
