| 2nd-Corinthians 10:1 | Now I, Paul, myself make request to you by the quiet and gentle behaviour of Christ, I who am poor in spirit when with you, but who say what is in my mind to you without fear when I am away from you: | But I myself, Paul, entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of the Christ, who, as to appearance, [when present] [am] mean among you, but absent am bold towards you; | But as for me Paul, I entreat you by the gentleness and self-forgetfulness of Christ I who when among you have not an imposing personal presence, but when absent am fearlessly outspoken in dealing with you. | Now I Paul myself beseech you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold towards you: |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:2 | Yes, I make my request to you, so that when I am with you I may not have to make use of the authority which may be needed against some to whom we seem to be walking after the flesh. | but I beseech that present I may not be bold with the confidence with which I think to be daring towards some who think of us as walking according to flesh. | I beseech you not to compel me when present to make a bold display of the confidence with which I reckon I shall show my `courage' against some who reckon that we are guided by worldly principles. | But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, with which I think to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:3 | For though we may be living in the flesh, we are not fighting after the way of the flesh | For walking in flesh, we do not war according to flesh. | For, though we are still living in the world, it is no worldly warfare that we are waging. | For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh: |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:4 | (For the arms with which we are fighting are not those of the flesh, but are strong before God for the destruction of high places); | For the arms of our warfare [are] not fleshly, but powerful according to God to [the] overthrow of strongholds; | The weapons with which we fight are not human weapons, but are mighty for God in overthrowing strong fortresses. | (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:5 | Putting an end to reasonings, and every high thing which is lifted up against the knowledge of God, and causing every thought to come under the authority of Christ; | overthrowing reasonings and every high thing that lifts itself up against the knowledge of God, and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ; | For we overthrow arrogant `reckonings,' and every stronghold that towers high in defiance of the knowledge of God, and we carry off every thought as if into slavery into subjection to Christ; | Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:6 | Being ready to give punishment to whatever is against his authority, after you have made it clear that you are completely under his control. | and having in readiness to avenge all disobedience when your obedience shall have been fulfilled. | while we hold ourselves in readiness to punish every act of disobedience, as soon as ever you as a Church have fully shown your obedience. | And having in a readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:7 | Give attention to the things which are before you. If any man seems to himself to be Christ's, let him keep in mind that we are as much Christ's as he is. | Do ye look at what concerns appearance? If any one has confidence in himself that he is of Christ, let him think this again in himself, that even as he [is] of Christ, so also [are] we. | Is it outward appearances you look to? If any man is confident as regards himself that he specially belongs to Christ, let him consider again and reflect that just as he belongs to Christ, so also do we. | Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trusteth to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:8 | For though I might take pride in our authority (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for your destruction), it will not be a cause of shame to me: | For and if I should boast even somewhat more abundantly of our authority, which the Lord has given [to us] for building up and not for your overthrowing, I shall not be put to shame; | If, however, I were to boast more loudly of our Apostolic authority, which the Lord has given us that we may build you up, not pull you down, I should have no reason to feel ashamed. | For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:9 | That I may not seem to have the desire of causing you fear by my letters. | that I may not seem as if I was frightening you by letters: | Let it not seem as if I wanted to frighten you by my letters. | That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:10 | For his letters, they say, have weight and are strong; but in body he is feeble, and his way of talking has little force. | because his letters, he says, [are] weighty and strong, but his presence in the body weak, and his speech naught. | For they say "His letters are authoritative and forcible, but his personal presence is unimpressive, and as for eloquence, he has none." | For his letters (say they) are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:11 | Let those who say this keep in mind that, what we are in word by letters when we are away, so will we be in act when we are present. | Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by letters [when] absent, such also present in deed. | Let such people take this into their reckoning, that whatever we are in word by our letters when absent, the same are we also in act when present. | Let such one think this, that such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:12 | For we will not make comparison of ourselves with some of those who say good things about themselves: but these, measuring themselves by themselves, and making comparison of themselves with themselves, are not wise. | For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves; but these, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not intelligent. | For we have not the `courage' to rank ourselves among, or compare ourselves with, certain persons distinguished by their self-commendation. Yet they are not wise, measuring themselves, as they do, by one another and comparing themselves with one another. | For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:13 | We will not give glory to ourselves in over-great measure, but after the measure of the rule which God has given us, a measure which comes even to you. | Now *we* will not boast out of measure, but according to the measure of the rule which the God of measure has apportioned to us, to reach to you also. | We, however, will not exceed due limits in our boasting, but will keep within the limits of the sphere which God has assigned to us as a limit, which reaches even to you. | But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even to you. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:14 | For we have no need to make ourselves seem more than we are, as if our authority did not come as far as to you: for we came even as far as you with the good news of Christ: | For we do not, as not reaching to you, overstretch ourselves, (for we have come to you also in the glad tidings of the Christ;) | For there is no undue stretch of authority on our part, as though it did not extend to you. We pressed on even to Corinth, and were the first to proclaim to you the Good News of the Christ. | For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not to you; for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:15 | Not taking credit to ourselves for what is not our business, that is, for the work of others; but having hope that, with the growth of your faith, we may get the credit for an increase which is the effect of our work, | not boasting out of measure in other people's labours, but having hope, your faith increasing, to be enlarged amongst you, according to our rule, yet more abundantly | We do not exceed our due limits, and take credit for other men's labours; but we entertain the hope that, as your faith grows, we shall gain promotion among you still keeping within our own sphere promotion to a larger field of labour, | Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labors; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you, according to our rule abundantly, |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:16 | So that we may be able to go on and take the good news to countries still farther away than you are, and not take credit for another man's work in making things ready to our hand. | to announce the glad tidings to that [which is] beyond you, not to be boasting in another's rule of things made ready to hand. | and shall tell the Good News in the districts beyond you, not boasting in another man's sphere about work already done by him. | To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:17 | But whoever has a desire for glory, let his glory be in the Lord. | But he that boasts, let him boast in the Lord. | But "whoever boasts, let his boast be in the Lord." | But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. |
| 2nd-Corinthians 10:18 | For the Lord's approval of a man is not dependent on his opinion of himself, but on the Lord's opinion of him. | For not *he* that commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends. | For it is not the man that commends himself who is really approved, but he whom the Lord commends. | For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth. |
