Ecclesiastes 10:1Dead flies make the oil of the perfumer give out an evil smell; more valued is a little wisdom than the great glory of the foolish.Dead flies cause a perfumer`s perfume To send forth a stink; The precious by reason of wisdom By reason of honour a little folly!Dying flies spoil the sweetness of the ointment. Wisdom and glory is more precious than a small and shortlived folly.Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth an offensive odor: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honor.
Ecclesiastes 10:2The heart of the wise man goes in the right direction; but the heart of a foolish man in the wrong. The heart of the wise [is] at his right hand, And the heart of a fool at his left. The heart of a wise man is in his right hand, and the heart of a fool is in his left hand.A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart is at his left.
Ecclesiastes 10:3And when the foolish man is walking in the way, he has no sense and lets everyone see that he is foolish. And also, when he that is a fool Is walking in the way, his heart is lacking, And he hath said to every one, `He [is] a fool.`Yea, and the fool when he walketh in the way, whereas be himself is a fool, esteemeth all men fools. Also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
Ecclesiastes 10:4If the wrath of the ruler is against you, keep in your place; in him who keeps quiet even great sins may be overlooked. If the spirit of the ruler go up against thee, Thy place leave not, For yielding quieteth great sinners. If the spirit of him that hath power, ascend upon thee, leave not thy place: because care will make the greatest sins to cease. If the spirit of the ruler riseth against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offenses.
Ecclesiastes 10:5There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, like an error which comes by chance from a ruler:There is an evil I have seen under the sun, As an error that goeth out from the ruler,There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were by an error proceeding from the face of the prince:There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
Ecclesiastes 10:6The foolish are placed in high positions, but men of wealth are kept low.He hath set the fool in many high places, And the rich in a low place do sit.A fool set in high dignity, and the rich sitting beneath.Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
Ecclesiastes 10:7I have seen servants on horses, and rulers walking on the earth as servants.I have seen servants on horses, And princes walking as servants on the earth.I have seen servants upon horses: and princes walking on the ground as servants.I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
Ecclesiastes 10:8He who makes a hole for others will himself go into it, and for him who makes a hole through a wall the bite of a snake will be a punishment.Whoso is digging a pit falleth into it, And whoso is breaking a hedge, a serpent biteth him.He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoever breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
Ecclesiastes 10:9He who gets out stones from the earth will be damaged by them, and in the cutting of wood there is danger.Whoso is removing stones is grieved by them, Whoso is cleaving trees endangered by them.He that removeth stones, shall be hurt by them: and he that cutteth trees, shall be wounded by them.Whoever removeth stones shall be hurt by them; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered by it.
Ecclesiastes 10:10If the iron has no edge, and he does not make it sharp, then he has to put out more strength; but wisdom makes things go well.If the iron hath been blunt, And he the face hath not sharpened, Then doth he increase strength, And wisdom [is] advantageous to make right. If the iron be blunt, and be not as before, but be made blunt, with much labour it shall be sharpened: and after industry shall follow wisdom. If the iron is blunt, and he doth not whet the edge, then must he use more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
Ecclesiastes 10:11If a snake gives a bite before the word of power is said, then there is no longer any use in the word of power. If the serpent biteth without enchantment, Then there is no advantage to a master of the tongue. If a serpent bite in silence, he is nothing better that backbiteth secretly.Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
Ecclesiastes 10:12The words of a wise man's mouth are sweet to all, but the lips of a foolish man are his destruction.Words of the mouth of the wise [are] gracious, And the lips of a fool swallow him up.The words of the mouth of a wise man are grace: but the lips of a fool shall throw him down headlong. The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
Ecclesiastes 10:13The first words of his mouth are foolish, and the end of his talk is evil crime. The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] folly, And the latter end of his mouth [Is] mischievous madness. The beginning of his words is folly, and the end of his talk is a mischievous error. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
Ecclesiastes 10:14The foolish are full of words; man has no knowledge of what will be; and who is able to say what will be after him?And the fool multiplieth words: `Man knoweth not that which is, And that which is after him, who doth declare to him?`A fool multiplieth words. A man cannot tell what hath been before him: and what shall be after him, who can tell him?A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
Ecclesiastes 10:15The work of the foolish will be a weariness to him, because he has no knowledge of the way to the town. The labour of the foolish wearieth him, In that he hath not known to go unto the city. The labour of fools shall afflict them that know not bow to go to the city. The labor of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
Ecclesiastes 10:16Unhappy is the land whose king is a boy, and whose rulers are feasting in the morning.Wo to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a youth, And thy princes do eat in the morning.Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and when the princes eat in the morning.Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
Ecclesiastes 10:17Happy is the land whose ruler is of noble birth, and whose chiefs take food at the right time, for strength and not for feasting.Happy art thou, O land, When thy king [is] a son of freemen, And thy princes do eat in due season, For might, and not for drunkenness.Blessed is the land, whose king is noble, and whose princes eat in due season for refreshment, and not for riotousness.Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
Ecclesiastes 10:18When no work is done the roof goes in, and when the hands do nothing water comes into the house.By slothfulness is the wall brought low, And by idleness of the hands doth the house drop.By slothfulness a building shall be brought down, and through the weakness of hands, the house shall drop through.By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
Ecclesiastes 10:19A feast is for laughing, and wine makes glad the heart; but by the one and the other money is wasted. For mirth they are making a feast, And wine maketh life joyful, And the silver answereth with all.For laughter they make bread, and wine that the living may feast: and all things obey money.A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
Ecclesiastes 10:20Say not a curse against the king, even in your thoughts; and even secretly say not a curse against the man of wealth; because a bird of the air will take the voice, and that which has wings will give news of it.Even in thy mind a king revile not, And in the inner parts of thy bed-chamber Revile not the rich: For a fowl of the heavens causeth the voice to go, And a possessor of wings declareth the word.Detract not the king, no not in thy thought; and speak not evil of the rich man in thy private chamber: because even the birds of the air will carry thy voice, and he that hath wings will tell what thou hast said.Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bed-chamber: for a bird of the air will carry the voice, and that which hath wings will tell the matter.
