| Jeremiah 20:1 | Now it came to the ears of Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief in authority in the house of the Lord, that Jeremiah was saying these things; | And Pashhur son of Immer the priest who also [is] overseer, leader in the house of Jehovah heareth Jeremiah prophesying these things, | Now Phassur the son of Emmur, the priest, who was appointed chief in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremias prophesying these words. | |
| Jeremiah 20:2 | And Pashhur gave blows to Jeremiah and had his feet chained in a framework of wood in the higher doorway of Benjamin, which was in the house of the Lord. | and Pashhur smiteth Jeremiah the prophet, and putteth him unto the stocks, that [are] by the high gate of Benjamin, that [is] by the house of Jehovah. | And Phassur struck Jeremias the prophet, and put him in the stocks, that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, in the house of the Lord. | |
| Jeremiah 20:3 | Then on the day after, Pashhur let Jeremiah loose. Then Jeremiah said to him, The Lord has given you the name of Magor-missabib (Cause-of-fear-on-every-side), not Pashhur. | and it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Pashhur bringeth out Jeremiah from the stocks, and Jeremiah saith unto him, `Not Pashhur hath Jehovah called thy name, but Magor-Missabib. | And when it was light the next day, Phassur brought Jeremias out of the stocks. And Jeremias said to him: The Lord hath not called thy name Phassur, but fear on every side. | |
| Jeremiah 20:4 | For the Lord has said, See, I will make you a cause of fear to yourself and to all your friends: they will come to their death by the sword of their haters, and your eyes will see it: and I will give all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will take them away prisoners into Babylon and put them to the sword. | For thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am making thee for a fear to thyself, And to all loving thee, And they have fallen by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes are beholding, And all Judah I give into the hand of the king of Babylon, And he hath removed them to Babylon, And he hath smitten them with the sword. | For thus saith the Lord: Behold I will deliver thee up to fear, thee and all thy friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thy eyes shall see it, and I will give all Juda into the hand of the king of Babylon: and he shall strike them with the sword. | |
| Jeremiah 20:5 | And more than this, I will give all the wealth of this town and all its profits and all its things of value, even all the stores of the kings of Judah will I give into the hands of their haters, who will put violent hands on them and take them away to Babylon. | And I have given all the strength of this city, And all its labour, and all its precious things, Yea, all the treasures of the kings of Judah I do give into the hand of their enemies, And they have spoiled them, and taken them, And have brought them into Babylon. | And I will give all the substance of this city, and all its labour, and every precious thing thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Juda will I give into the hands of their enemies: and they shall pillage them, and take them away, and carry them to Babylon. | |
| Jeremiah 20:6 | And you, Pashhur, and all who are in your house, will go away prisoners: you will come to Babylon, and there your body will be put to rest, you and all your friends, to whom you said false words. | And thou, Pashhur, and all dwelling in thy house, Do go into captivity. and Babylon thou dost enter, And there thou diest, and there thou art buried, Thou and all loving thee, To whom thou hast prophesied falsely.` | But thou, Phassur, and all that dwell in thy house, shall go into captivity, and thou shalt go to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and there thou shalt be buried, thou and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied a lie. | |
| Jeremiah 20:7 | O Lord, you have been false to me, and I was tricked; you are stronger than I, and have overcome me: I have become a thing to be laughed at all the day, everyone makes sport of me. | Thou hast persuaded me, O Jehovah, and I am persuaded; Thou hast hardened me, and dost prevail, I have been for a laughter all the day, Every one is mocking at me, | Thou hast deceived me, O Lord, and I am deceived: thou hast been stronger than I, and thou hast prevailed. I am become a laughing-stock all the day, all scoff at me. | |
| Jeremiah 20:8 | For every word I say is a cry for help; I say with a loud voice, Violent behaviour and wasting: because the word of the Lord is made a shame to me and a cause of laughing all the day. | Because from the time I speak I cry out, `Violence and destruction,` I cry, For the word of Jehovah hath been to me For reproach and for derision all the day. | For I am speaking now this long time, crying out against iniquity, and I often proclaim devistation: and the word of the Lord is made a reproach to me, and a derision all the day. | |
| Jeremiah 20:9 | And if I say, I will not keep him in mind, I will not say another word in his name; then it is in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am tired of keeping myself in, I am not able to do it. | And I said, `I do not mention Him, Nor do I speak any more in His name,` And it hath been in my heart As a burning fire shut up in my bones, And I have been weary of containing, And I am not able. | Then I said: I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name: and there came in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was wearied, not being able to bear it. | |
| Jeremiah 20:10 | For numbers of them say evil secretly in my hearing (there is fear on every side): they say, Come, let us give witness against him; all my nearest friends, who are watching for my fall, say, It may be that he will be taken by deceit, and we will get the better of him and give him punishment. | For I have heard the evil report of many, Fear [is] round about: `Declare, and we declare it,` All mine allies are watching [for] my halting, `Perhaps he is enticed, and we prevail over him, And we take our vengeance out of him.` | For I heard the reproaches of many, and terror on every side: Persecute him, and let us persecute him: from all the men that were my familiars, and continued at my side: if by any means he may be deceived, and we may prevail against him, and be revenged on him. | |
| Jeremiah 20:11 | But the Lord is with me as a great one, greatly to be feared: so my attackers will have a fall, and they will not overcome me: they will be greatly shamed, because they have not done wisely, even with an unending shame, kept in memory for ever. | And Jehovah [is] with me, as a terrible mighty one, Therefore my persecutors stumble and prevail not, They have been exceedingly ashamed, For they have not acted wisely, Confusion age-during is not forgotten. | But the Lord is with me as a strong warrior: therefore they that persecute me shall fall, and shall be weak: they shall be greatly confounded, because they have not understood the everlasting reproach, which never shall be effaced. | |
| Jeremiah 20:12 | But, O Lord of armies, testing the upright and seeing the thoughts and the heart, let me see your punishment come on them; for I have put my cause before you. | And, O Jehovah of Hosts, trier of the righteous, Beholder of reins and heart, I do see Thy vengeance out of them, For unto Thee I have revealed my cause. | And thou, O Lord of hosts, prover of the just, who seest the reins and the heart: let me see, I beseech thee, thy vengeance on them: for to thee I have laid open my cause. | |
| Jeremiah 20:13 | Make melody to the Lord, give praise to the Lord: for he has made the soul of the poor man free from the hands of the evil-doers. | Sing ye to Jehovah, praise Jehovah, For He hath delivered the soul of the needy From the hand of evil doers. | Sing ye to the Lord, praise the Lord: because he hath delivered the soul of the poor out of the hand of the wicked. | |
| Jeremiah 20:14 | A curse on the day of my birth: let there be no blessing on the day when my mother had me. | Cursed [is] the day in which I was born, The day that my mother bare me, Let it not be blessed! | Cursed be the day wherein I was borne: let not the day in which my mother bore me, be blessed. | |
| Jeremiah 20:15 | A curse on the man who gave the news to my father, saying, You have a male child; making him very glad. | Cursed [is] the man who bore tidings [to] my father, saying, `Born to thee hath been a child a male,` Making him very glad! | Cursed be the man that brought the tidings to my father, saying: A man child is born to thee: and made him greatly rejoice. | |
| Jeremiah 20:16 | May that man be like the towns overturned by the Lord without mercy: let a cry for help come to his ears in the morning, and the sound of war in the middle of the day; | Then hath that man been as the cities, That Jehovah overthrew, and repented not, And he hath heard a cry at morning, And a shout at time of noon. | Let that man be as the cities that the Lord hath overthrown, and hath not repented: let him hear a cry in the morning, and howling at noontide: | |
| Jeremiah 20:17 | Because he did not put me to death before my birth took place: so my mother's body would have been my last resting-place, and she would have been with child for ever. | Because he hath not put me to death from the womb, And my mother is to me my grave, And her womb a pregnancy age-during. | Who slew me not from the womb, that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb an everlasting conception. | |
| Jeremiah 20:18 | Why did I come from my mother's body to see pain and sorrow, so that my days might be wasted with shame? | Why [is] this? from the womb I have come out, To see labour and sorrow, Yea, consumed in shame are my days! | Why came I out of the womb, to see labour and sorrow, and that my days should be spent in confusion? | |
