| Psalms 53:1 | <To the chief music-maker; put to Mahalath. Maschil. Of David.> The foolish man has said in his heart, God will not do anything. They are unclean, they have done evil works; there is not one who does good. | To the Overseer. `On a disease.` An instruction, by David. A fool said in his heart, `There is no God.` They have done corruptly, Yea, they have done abominable iniquity, There is none doing good. | Unto the end, In verses, understanding for David. | The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity. There is no one who does good. |
| Psalms 53:2 | God was looking down from heaven on the children of men, to see if there were any who had wisdom, searching after God. | God from the heavens looked on the sons of men, To see if there be an understanding one, [One] seeking God. | When the men of Ziph had come and said to Saul: Is not David hidden with us? | God looks down from heaven on the children of men, To see if there are any who understood, Who seek after God. |
| Psalms 53:3 | Every one of them has gone back; they are unclean: there is not one who does good, no, not one. | Every one went back, together they became filthy, There is none doing good not even one. | Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me in thy strength. | Every one of them has gone back. They have become filthy together. There is no one who does good, no, not one. |
| Psalms 53:4 | Have the workers of evil no knowledge? they take my people for food, as they would take bread; they make no prayer to God. | Have not workers of iniquity known, Those eating my people have eaten bread, God they have not called. | O God, hear my prayer: give ear to the words of my mouth. | Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge, Who eat up my people as they eat bread, And don't call on God? |
| Psalms 53:5 | They were in great fear, where there was no cause for fear: for the bones of those who make war on you have been broken by God; you have put them to shame, because God has no desire for them. | There they feared a fear there was no fear, For God hath scattered the bones of him Who is encamping against thee, Thou hast put to shame, For God hath despised them. | For strangers have risen up against me; and the mighty have sought after my soul: and they have not set God before their eyes. | There they were in great fear, where no fear was, For God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you. You have put them to shame, Because God has rejected them. |
| Psalms 53:6 | May the salvation of Israel come out of Zion! When the fate of his people is changed by God, Jacob will have joy, and Israel will be glad. | Who doth give from Zion the salvation of Israel? When God turneth back [to] a captivity of His people, Jacob doth rejoice Israel is glad! | For behold God is my helper: and the Lord is the protector of my soul. | Oh that the salvation of Israel had already come out of Zion! When God brings back the captivity of his people, Then shall Jacob rejoice. Israel shall be glad. Psalm 54 For the Chief Musician. On stringed instruments. A contemplation by David, when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, "Isn't David hiding himself among us?" |
