Psalms 77:1<To the chief music-maker. After Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A Psalm.> I was crying to God with my voice; even to God with my voice, and he gave ear to me.To the Overseer, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph. My voice [is] to God, and I cry, my voice [is] to God, And He hath given ear unto me.Understanding for Asaph. Attend, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth. My cry goes to God! Indeed, I cry to God for help, And for him to listen to me.
Psalms 77:2In the day of my trouble, my heart was turned to the Lord: my hand was stretched out in the night without resting; my soul would not be comforted. In a day of my distress the Lord I sought, My hand by night hath been spread out, And it doth not cease, My soul hath refused to be comforted.I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter propositions from the beginning. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and didn't get tired. My soul refused to be comforted.
Psalms 77:3I will keep God in memory, with sounds of grief; my thoughts are troubled, and my spirit is overcome. (Selah.)I remember God, and make a noise, I meditate, and feeble is my spirit. Selah. How great things have we heard and known, and our fathers have told us.I remember God, and I groan. I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah.
Psalms 77:4You keep my eyes from sleep; I am so troubled that no words come.Thou hast taken hold of the watches of mine eyes, I have been moved, and I speak not. They have not been hidden from their children, in another generation. Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, and his wonders which he hath done. You hold my eyelids open. I am so troubled that I can't speak.
Psalms 77:5My thoughts go back to the days of the past, to the years which are gone.I have reckoned the days of old, The years of the ages. And he set up a testimony in Jacob: and made a law in Israel. How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children:I have considered the days of old, The years of ancient times.
Psalms 77:6The memory of my song comes back to me in the night; my thoughts are moving in my heart; my spirit is searching with care.I remember my music in the night, With my heart I meditate, and my spirit doth search diligently:that another generation might know them. The children that should be born and should rise up, and declare them to their children.I remember my song in the night. I consider in my own heart; My spirit diligently inquires:
Psalms 77:7Will the Lord put me away for ever? will he be kind no longer? To the ages doth the Lord cast off? Doth He add to be pleased no more? That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: and may seek his commandments."Will the Lord reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more?
Psalms 77:8Is his mercy quite gone for ever? has his word come to nothing?Hath His kindness ceased for ever? The saying failed to all generations? That they may not become like their fathers, a perverse end exasperating generation. A generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not faithful to God.Has his lovingkindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations?
Psalms 77:9Has God put away the memory of his pity? are his mercies shut up by his wrath? (Selah.)Hath God forgotten [His] favours? Hath He shut up in anger His mercies? Selah. The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: they have turned back in the day of battle.Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?" Selah.
Psalms 77:10And I said, It is a weight on my spirit; but I will keep in mind the years of the right hand of the Most High. And I say: `My weakness is, The changes of the right hand of the Most High.`They kept not the covenant of God: and in his law they would not walk. Then I thought, "I will appeal to this: The years of the right hand of the Most High."
Psalms 77:11I will keep in mind the works of Jah: I will keep the memory of your wonders in the past.I mention the doings of Jah, For I remember of old Thy wonders,And they forgot his benefits, and his wonders that he had shewn them.I will remember Yah's deeds; For I will remember your wonders of old.
Psalms 77:12I will give thought to all your work, while my mind goes over your acts of power. And I have meditated on all Thy working, And I talk concerning Thy doings.Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.I will also meditate on all your work, And consider your doings.
Psalms 77:13Your way, O God, is holy: what god is so great as our God?O God, in holiness [is] Thy way, Who [is] a great god like God?He divided the sea and brought them through: and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.Your way, God, is in the sanctuary. What god is great like God?
Psalms 77:14You are the God who does works of power: you have made your strength clear to the nations.Thou [art] the God doing wonders. Thou hast made known among the peoples Thy strength,And he conducted them with a cloud by day: and all the night with a light ofYou are the God who does wonders. You have made your strength known among the peoples.
Psalms 77:15With your arm you have made your people free, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. (Selah.)Thou hast redeemed with strength Thy people, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah. He struck the rock in the wilderness: and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep. You have redeemed your people with your arm, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
Psalms 77:16The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you, they were in fear: even the deep was troubled. The waters have seen Thee, O God, The waters have seen Thee, They are afraid also depths are troubled. He brought forth water out of the rock: and made streams run down as rivers. The waters saw you, God. The waters saw you, and they writhed. The depths also convulsed.
Psalms 77:17The clouds sent out water; the skies gave out a sound; truly, your arrows went far and wide.Poured out waters have thick clouds, The skies have given forth a noise, Also Thine arrows go up and down. And they added yet more sin against him: they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water. The clouds poured out water. The skies resounded with thunder. Your arrows also flashed around.
Psalms 77:18The voice of your thunder went rolling on; the world was flaming with the light of the storm; the earth was shaking. The voice of Thy thunder [is] in the spheres, Lightnings have lightened the world, The earth hath trembled, yea, it shaketh. And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking meat for their desires. The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind. The lightnings lit up the world. The earth trembled and shook.
Psalms 77:19Your way was in the sea, and your road in the great waters; there was no knowledge of your footsteps. In the sea [is] Thy way, And Thy paths [are] in many waters, And Thy tracks have not been known. And they spoke ill of God: they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?Your way was through the sea; Your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known.
Psalms 77:20You were guiding your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.Thou hast led as a flock Thy people, By the hand of Moses and Aaron!Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he also give bread, or provide a table for his people? You led your people like a flock, By the hand of Moses and Aaron. Psalm 78 A contemplation by Asaph.
