Psalms 78:1{An instruction. Of Asaph.} Give ear, O my people, to my law; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.<Maschil. Of Asaph.> Give ear, O my people, to my law; let your ears be bent down to the words of my mouth.A psalm for Asaph. O God, the heathens are come into thy inheritance, they have defiled thy holy temple: they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit.
Psalms 78:2I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter riddles from of old,Opening my mouth I will give out a story, even the dark sayings of old times; They have given the dead bodies of thy servants to be meat for the fowls of the air: the flesh of thy saints for the beasts of the earth.
Psalms 78:3Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us:Which have come to our hearing and our knowledge, as they were given to us by our fathers. They have poured out their blood as water, round about Jerusalem and there was none to bury them.
Psalms 78:4We will not hide [them] from their sons, shewing forth to the generation to come the praises of Jehovah, and his strength, and his marvellous works which he hath done.We will not keep them secret from our children; we will make clear to the coming generation the praises of the Lord and his strength, and the great works of wonder which he has done.We are become a reproach to our neighbours: a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
Psalms 78:5For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; He put up a witness in Jacob, and made a law in Israel; which he gave to our fathers so that they might give knowledge of them to their children; How long, O Lord, wilt thou be angry for ever: shall thy zeal be kindled like a fire?
Psalms 78:6That the generation to come might know [them], the children that should be born; that they might rise up and tell [them] to their children,So that the generation to come might have knowledge of them, even the children of the future, who would give word of them to their children;Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that have not known thee: and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
Psalms 78:7And that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of ùGod, but observe his commandments; So that they might put their hope in God, and not let God's works go out of their minds, but keep his laws;Because they have devoured Jacob; and have laid waste his place.
Psalms 78:8And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that prepared not their heart, and whose spirit was not stedfast with ùGod.And not be like their fathers, a stiff-necked and uncontrolled generation; a generation whose heart was hard, whose spirit was not true to God.Remember not our former iniquities: let thy mercies speedily prevent us, for we are become exceeding poor.
Psalms 78:9The sons of Ephraim, armed bowmen, turned back in the day of battle. The children of Ephraim, armed with bows, were turned back on the day of the fight.Help us, O God, our saviour: and for the glory of thy name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for thy name's sake:
Psalms 78:10They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; They were not ruled by God's word, and they would not go in the way of his law;Lest they should say among the Gentiles: Where is their God? And let him be made known among the nations before our eyes, By the revenging the blood of thy servants, which hath been shed:
Psalms 78:11And forgot his doings, and his marvellous works which he had shewn them. They let his works go out of their memory, and the wonders which he had made them see.let the sighing of the prisoners come in before thee. According to the greatness of thy arm, take possession of the children of them that have been put to death.
Psalms 78:12In the sight of their fathers had he done wonders, in the land of Egypt, the field of Zoan.He did great works before the eyes of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan. And render to our neighbours sevenfold in their bosom: the reproach wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.
Psalms 78:13He clave the sea, and caused them to pass through; and made the waters to stand as a heap; The sea was cut in two so that they might go through; the waters were massed together on this side and on that. But we thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, will give thanks to thee for ever. We will shew forth thy praise, unto generation and generation.
Psalms 78:14And he led them with a cloud in the daytime, and all the night with the light of fire.In the daytime he was guiding them in the cloud, and all through the night with a light of fire.
Psalms 78:15He clave rocks in the wilderness, and gave [them] drink as out of the depths, abundantly; The rocks of the waste land were broken by his power, and he gave them drink as out of the deep waters.
