1st-Samuel 24:1And it came to pass when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi. Now when Saul came back from fighting the Philistines, news was given him that David was in the waste land of En-gedi.And it came to pass, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told to him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.Then David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds of Engaddi.
1st-Samuel 24:2And Saul took three thousand men, chosen out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. Then Saul took three thousand of the best men out of all Israel, and went in search of David and his men on the rocks of the mountain goats. Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. And when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, they told him, saying: Behold, David is in the desert of Engaddi.
1st-Samuel 24:3And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet; and David and his men were abiding in the recesses of the cave. And on the way he came to a place where sheep were kept, where there was a hollow in the rock; and Saul went in for a private purpose. Now David and his men were in the deepest part of the hollow. And he came to the sheep-cotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.Saul therefore took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went out to seek after David, and his men, even upon the most craggy rocks, which are accessible only to wild goats.
1st-Samuel 24:4And David's men said to him, Behold the day of which Jehovah said to thee, Behold, I will give thine enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good to thee. And David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe secretly. And David's men said to him, Now is the time when the Lord says to you, I will give up your hater into your hands to do with him whatever seems good to you. Then David, getting up, took the skirt of Saul's robe in his hand, cutting off the end of it without his knowledge. And the men of David said to him, Behold the day of which the LORD said to thee, Behold, I will deliver thy enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good to thee. Then David arose, and privately cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. And he came to the sheepcotes, which were in his way. And there was a cave, into which Saul went, to ease nature: now David and his men lay hid in the inner part of the cave.
1st-Samuel 24:5And it came to pass afterwards that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. And later, David was full of regret for cutting off Saul's skirt. And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. And the servants of David said to him: Behold the day, of which the Lord said to thee: I will deliver thy enemy unto thee, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good in thy eyes. Then David arose, and secretly cut off the hem of Saul's robe.
1st-Samuel 24:6And he said to his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing to my master, Jehovah's anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, for he is the anointed of Jehovah. And David said to his men, Before the Lord, never let it be said that my hand was lifted up against my lord, the man of the Lord's selection, for the Lord's holy oil has been put on him.And he said to his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.After which David's heart struck him, because he had cut off the hem of Saul's robe.
1st-Samuel 24:7And David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on [his] way.So with these words David kept his servants back, and did not let them make an attack on Saul. And Saul got up and went on his way.So David restrained his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose out of the cave, and went on his way.And he said to his men: The Lord be merciful unto me, that I may do no such thing to my master the Lord's anointed, as to lay my hand upon him, because he is the Lord's anointed.
1st-Samuel 24:8David also arose afterwards, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king! And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance. And after that David came out of the hollow rock, and crying after Saul said, My lord the king. And when Saul gave a look back, David went down on his face and gave him honour.David also rose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself. And David stopped his men with his words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rising up out of the cave, went on his way.
1st-Samuel 24:9And David said to Saul, Why dost thou listen to words of men, saying, Behold, David seeks thy hurt? And David said to Saul, Why do you give any attention to those who say that it is my desire to do you wrong? And David said to Saul, Why hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? And David also rose up after him: and going out of the cave cried after Saul, saying: My lord the king. And Saul looked behind him: and David bowing himself down to the ground, worshipped,
1st-Samuel 24:10Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that Jehovah had given thee this day into my hand in the cave; and they bade me kill thee; but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is the anointed of Jehovah.Look! you have seen today how the Lord gave you up into my hands even now in the hollow of the rocks: and some would have had me put you to death, but I had pity on you: for I said, Never will my hand be lifted up against my lord, who has been marked with the holy oil.Behold, this day thy eyes have seen how the LORD hath delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave; and some bade me kill thee: but my eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed. And said to Saul: Why dost thou hear the words of men that say David seeketh thy hurt?
1st-Samuel 24:11And see, my father, yes, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand. For in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou liest in wait for my life to take it.And see, my father, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: for the fact that I took off the skirt of your robe and did not put you to death is witness that I have no evil purpose, and I have done you no wrong, though you are waiting for my life to take it.Moreover, my father, see, yes, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.Behold this day thy eyes have seen, that the Lord hath delivered thee into my hand, in the cave, and I had a thought to kill thee, but my eye hath spared thee. For I said: I will not put out my hand against my lord, because he is the Lord's anointed.
1st-Samuel 24:12Jehovah judge between me and thee, and Jehovah avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee.May the Lord be judge between me and you, and may the Lord give me my rights against you, but my hand will never be lifted up against you.The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but my hand shall not be upon thee. Moreover see and know, O my father, the hem of thy robe in my hand, that when I cut, off the hem of thy robe, I would not put out my hand against thee. Reflect, and see, that there is no evil in my hand, nor iniquity, neither have I sinned against thee: but thou liest in wait for my life, to take it away.
1st-Samuel 24:13As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked; but my hand shall not be upon thee. There is an old saying, From the evil-doer comes evil: but my hand will never be lifted up against you.As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but my hand shall not be upon thee. The Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord revenge me of thee: but my hand shall not be upon thee.
1st-Samuel 24:14After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a single flea. After whom has the king of Israel come out? for whom are you searching? for a dead dog, an insect. After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea?As also it is said in the old proverb: From the wicked shall wickedness come forth: therefore my hand shall not be upon thee. After whom dost thou come out, O king of Israel?
1st-Samuel 24:15Jehovah therefore shall be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and do me justice [in delivering me] out of thy hand.So let the Lord be judge, and give a decision between me and you, and see and give support to my cause, and keep me from falling into your hands. The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand. After whom dost thou pursue? After a dead dog, after a flea.
1st-Samuel 24:16And as soon as David had ended speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. Now when David had said these words to Saul, Saul said, Is this your voice, David, my son? And Saul was overcome with weeping. And it came to pass when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.Be the Lord judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and judge my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.
1st-Samuel 24:17And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. And he said to David, You are right and I am wrong: for you have given me back good, but I have given you evil. And he said to David, thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded thee with evil. And when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, Saul said: Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
1st-Samuel 24:18And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me, forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me up into thy hand, thou didst not kill me.And you have made clear to me how good you have been to me today: because, when the Lord gave me up into your hands, you did not put me to death. And thou hast showed this day how thou hast dealt with me; forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thy hand, thou didst not kill me.And he said to David: Thou art more just than I: for thou hast done good to me, and I have rewarded thee with evil.
1st-Samuel 24:19For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Jehovah reward thee good for that thou hast done to me this day.If a man comes across his hater, will he let him get away safe? so may you be rewarded by the Lord for what you have done for me today. For if a man findeth his enemy, will he let him go away well? wherefore the LORD reward thee with good, for what thou hast done to me this day.And thou hast shewn this day what good things thou hast done to me: how the Lord delivered me into thy hand, and thou hast not killed me.
1st-Samuel 24:20And now behold, I know that thou shalt certainly be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand. And now I am certain that you will be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be made strong under your authority. And now, behold, I know well that thou wilt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in thy hand. For who when he hath found his enemy, will let him go well away? But the Lord reward thee for this good turn, for what thou hast done to me this day.
1st-Samuel 24:21Swear now therefore to me by Jehovah, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house. So give me your oath by the Lord, that you will not put an end to my seed after me or let my name be cut off from my father's family.Swear now therefore to me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house. And now as I know that thou shalt surely be king, and have the kingdom of Israel in thy hand:
1st-Samuel 24:22And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home; and David and his men went up to the stronghold. And David gave Saul his oath. And Saul went back to his house; but David and his men went up to their safe place. And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men repaired to the hold.Swear to me by the Lord, that thou wilt not destroy my seed after me, nor take away my name from the house of my father.
