Proverbs 18:1He that separateth himself seeketh [his] pleasure, he is vehement against all sound wisdom. He who keeps himself separate for his private purpose goes against all good sense. An unfriendly man pursues selfishness, And defies all sound judgment. He that hath a mind to depart from a friend seeketh occasions: he shall ever be subject to reproach.
Proverbs 18:2A fool hath no delight in understanding, but only that his heart may reveal itself.A foolish man has no pleasure in good sense, but only to let what is in his heart come to light.A fool has no delight in understanding, But only in broadcasting his own opinion.A fool receiveth not the words of prudence: unless thou say those things which are in his heart.
Proverbs 18:3When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach. When the evil-doer comes, a low opinion comes with him, and with the loss of honour comes shame. When wickedness comes, contempt also comes, And with shame comes disgrace. The wicked man when he is come into the depth of sine, contemneth: but ignominy and reproach follow him.
Proverbs 18:4The words of a man's mouth are deep waters, [and] the fountain of wisdom is a gushing brook. The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters: the fountain of wisdom is like a flowing stream. The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters. The fountain of wisdom is like a flowing brook.Words from the mouth of a men are as deep water: and the fountain of wisdom as an overflowing stream.
Proverbs 18:5It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to wrong the righteous in judgment. To have respect for the person of the evil-doer is not good, or to give a wrong decision against the upright. To be partial to the faces of the wicked is not good, Nor to deprive the innocent of justice. It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to decline from the truth of judgment.
Proverbs 18:6A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for stripes.A foolish man's lips are a cause of fighting, and his mouth makes him open to blows.A fool's lips come into strife, And his mouth invites beatings. The lips of a fool intermeddle with strife: and his mouth provoketh quarrels.
Proverbs 18:7A fool's mouth is destruction to him, and his lips are a snare to his soul. The mouth of a foolish man is his destruction, and his lips are a net for his soul.A fool's mouth is his destruction, And his lips are a snare to his soul. The mouth of a fool is his destruction: and his lips are the ruin of his soul.
Proverbs 18:8The words of a talebearer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. The words of one who says evil of his neighbour secretly are like sweet food, and go down into the inner parts of the stomach. The words of a gossip are like dainty morsels: They go down into a person's innermost parts. The words of the double tongued are as if they were harmless: and they reach even to the inner parts of the bowels. Fear casteth down the slothful: and the souls of the effeminate shall be hungry.
Proverbs 18:9He also who is indolent in his work is brother of the destroyer. He who does not give his mind to his work is brother to him who makes destruction. One who is slack in his work Is brother to him who is a master of destruction. He that is loose and slack in his work, is the brother of him that wasteth his own works.
Proverbs 18:10The name of Jehovah is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the upright man running into it is safe. The name of Yahweh is a strong tower: The righteous run to him, and are safe. The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the just runneth to it, and shall be exalted.
Proverbs 18:11The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own imagination. The property of a man of wealth is his strong town, and it is as a high wall in the thoughts of his heart. The rich man's wealth is his strong city, Like an unscalable wall in his own imagination. The substance of the rich man is the city of his strength, and as a strong wall compassing him about.
Proverbs 18:12Before destruction the heart of man is haughty; and before honour [goeth] humility. Before destruction the heart of man is full of pride, and before honour goes a gentle spirit. Before destruction the heart of man is proud, But before honor is humility. Before destruction, the heart of a man is exalted: and before he be glorified, it is humbled.
Proverbs 18:13He that giveth answer before he heareth, it is folly and shame unto him.To give an answer before hearing is a foolish thing and a cause of shame. He who gives answer before he hears, That is folly and shame to him.He that answereth before he heareth sheweth himself to be a fool, and worthy of confusion.
Proverbs 18:14The spirit of a man sustaineth his infirmity; but a broken spirit who can bear? The spirit of a man will be his support when he is ill; but how may a broken spirit be lifted up?A man's spirit will sustain him in sickness, But a crushed spirit who can bear? The spirit of a man upholdeth his infirmity: but a spirit that is easily angered, who can bear?
Proverbs 18:15The heart of an intelligent [man] getteth knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge. The heart of the man of good sense gets knowledge; the ear of the wise is searching for knowledge. The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.A wise heart shall acquire knowledge: and the ear of the wise seeketh instruction.
Proverbs 18:16A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.A man's offering makes room for him, letting him come before great men.A man's gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.A man's gift enlargeth his may, and maketh him room before princes.
Proverbs 18:17He that is first in his own cause [seemeth] just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.The man who first puts his cause before the judge seems to be in the right; but then his neighbour comes and puts his cause in its true light. He who pleads his cause first seems right; Until another comes and questions him.The just is first accuser of himself: his friend cometh, and shall search him.
Proverbs 18:18The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty. The decision of chance puts an end to argument, parting the strong. The lot settles disputes, And keeps strong ones apart. The lot suppresseth contentions, and determineth even between the mighty.
Proverbs 18:19A brother offended is [harder to be won] than a strong city; and contentions are as the bars of a palace.A brother wounded is like a strong town, and violent acts are like a locked tower.A brother offended is more difficult than a fortified city; And disputes are like the bars of a castle.A brother that is helped by his brother, is like a strong city: and judgments are like the bars of cities.
Proverbs 18:20A man's belly is satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; with the increase of his lips is he satisfied. With the fruit of a man's mouth his stomach will be full; the produce of his lips will be his in full measure.A man's stomach is filled with the fruit of his mouth. With the harvest of his lips he is satisfied.Of the fruit of a man's mouth shall his belly be satisfied: and the offspring of his lips shall fill him.
Proverbs 18:21Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and those to whom it is dear will have its fruit for their food.Death and life are in the power of the tongue; Those who love it will eat its fruit.Death and life are in the power of the tongue: they that love it, shall eat the fruits thereof.
Proverbs 18:22Whoso hath found a wife hath found a good thing, and hath obtained favour from Jehovah.Whoever gets a wife gets a good thing, and has the approval of the Lord.Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor of Yahweh. He that hath found a good wife, hath found a good thing, and shall receive a pleasure from the Lord. He that driveth away a good wife, driveth away a good thing: but he that keepeth an adulteress, is foolish and wicked.
Proverbs 18:23He that is poor speaketh with supplications, but the rich answereth roughly. The poor man makes requests for grace, but the man of wealth gives a rough answer. The poor pleads for mercy, But the rich answers harshly. The poor will speak with supplications, and the rich will speak roughly.
Proverbs 18:24A man of [many] friends will come to ruin but there is a friend [that] sticketh closer than a brother. There are friends who may be a man's destruction, but there is a lover who keeps nearer than a brother.A man of many companions may be ruined, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.A man amiable in society, shall be more friendly than a brother.
