| 1st-Corinthians 14:1 | Follow after love, and be emulous of spiritual [manifestations], but rather that ye may prophesy. | Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:2 | For he that speaks with a tongue does not speak to men but to God: for no one hears; but in spirit he speaks mysteries. | For he that speaketh in an unknown language, speaketh not to men, but to God: for no man understandeth him; yet in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:3 | But he that prophesies speaks to men [in] edification, and encouragement, and consolation. | But he that prophesieth, speaketh to men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:4 | He that speaks with a tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies [the] assembly. | He that speaketh in an unknown language edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:5 | Now I desire that ye should all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy. But greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive edification. | I would that ye all spoke in languages, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh in languages, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:6 | And now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I shall speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in teaching? | Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in languages, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:7 | Even lifeless things giving a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they give not distinction to the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? | And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:8 | For also, if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself for war? | For if the trumpet shall give an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle? |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:9 | Thus also *ye* with the tongue, unless ye give a distinct speech, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking to the air. | So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will speak into the air. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:10 | There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of undistinguishable sound. | There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:11 | If therefore I do not know the power of the sound, I shall be to him that speaks a barbarian, and he that speaks a barbarian for me. | Therefore, if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian to me. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:12 | Thus *ye* also, since ye are desirous of spirits, seek that ye may abound for the edification of the assembly. | Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:13 | Wherefore let him that speaks with a tongue pray that he may interpret. | Wherefore, let him that speaketh in an unknown language, pray that he may interpret. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:14 | For if I pray with a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. | For if I pray in an unknown language, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:15 | What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray also with the understanding; I will sing with the spirit, but I will sing also with the understanding. | What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:16 | Since otherwise, if thou blessest with [the] spirit, how shall he who fills the place of the simple [Christian] say Amen, at thy giving of thanks, since he does not know what thou sayest? | Else, when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:17 | For *thou* indeed givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. | For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:18 | I thank God I speak in a tongue more than all of you: | I thank my God, I speak in languages more than ye all: |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:19 | but in [the] assembly I desire to speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also, [rather] than ten thousand words in a tongue. | Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown language. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:20 | Brethren, be not children in [your] minds, but in malice be babes; but in [your] minds be grown [men]. | Brethren, be not children in understanding: yet in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:21 | It is written in the law, By people of other tongues, and by strange lips, will I speak to this people; and neither thus will they hear me, saith the Lord. | In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak to this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:22 | So that tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to unbelievers; but prophecy, not to unbelievers, but to those who believe. | Wherefore languages are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them who believe. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:23 | If therefore the whole assembly come together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and simple [persons] enter in, or unbelievers, will not they say ye are mad? | If therefore the whole church is assembled in one place, and all speak in languages, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are insane? |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:24 | But if all prophesy, and some unbeliever or simple [person] come in, he is convicted of all, he is judged of all; | But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced by all, he is judged by all: |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:25 | the secrets of his heart are manifested; and thus, falling upon [his] face, he will do homage to God, reporting that God is indeed amongst you. | And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and report that God is in you in truth. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:26 | What is it then, brethren? whenever ye come together, each [of you] has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to edification. | How is it then, brethren? when ye are assembled, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a language, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done to edification. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:27 | If any one speak with a tongue, [let it be] two, or at the most three, and separately, and let one interpret; | If any man speaketh in an unknown language, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:28 | but if there be no interpreter, let him be silent in [the] assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God. | But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:29 | And let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. | Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the others judge. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:30 | But if there be a revelation to another sitting [there], let the first be silent. | If any thing is revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:31 | For ye can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all be encouraged. | For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:32 | And spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. | And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:33 | For God is not [a God] of disorder but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints. | For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:34 | Let [your] women be silent in the assemblies, for it is not permitted to them to speak; but to be in subjection, as the law also says. | Let your women keep silence in the churches; for it is not permitted to them to speak: but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:35 | But if they wish to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in assembly. | And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home; for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:36 | Did the word of God go out from you, or did it come to you only? | What? came the word of God out from you? or came it to you only? |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:37 | If any one thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognise the things that I write to you, that it is [the] Lord's commandment. | If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:38 | But if any be ignorant, let him be ignorant. | But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:39 | So that, brethren, desire to prophesy, and do not forbid the speaking with tongues. | Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak in languages. |
| 1st-Corinthians 14:40 | But let all things be done comelily and with order. | Let all things be done decently, and in order. |
