Psalms 73:1Understanding for Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast us off unto the end: why is thy wrath enkindled against the sheep of thy pasture?Surely God is good to Israel, [Even] to such as are pure in heart. Truly, God is good to Israel, even to such as are clean in heart.{A Psalm of Asaph.} Truly God is good to Israel, to such as are of a pure heart.
Psalms 73:2Remember thy congregation, which thou hast possessed from the beginning. The sceptre of thy inheritance which thou hast redeemed: mount Sion in which thou hast dwelt.But as for me, my feet were almost gone; My steps had well nigh slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost gone from under me; I was near to slipping;But as for me, my feet were almost gone, my steps had well nigh slipped;
Psalms 73:3Lift up thy hands against their pride unto the end; see what things the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.For I was envious at the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Because of my envy of the men of pride, when I saw the well-being of the wrongdoers.For I was envious at the arrogant, seeing the prosperity of the wicked.
Psalms 73:4And they that hate thee have made their boasts, in the midst of thy solemnity. They have set up their ensigns for signs,For there are no pangs in their death; But their strength is firm. For they have no pain; their bodies are fat and strong.For they have no pangs in their death, and their body is well nourished;
Psalms 73:5and they knew not both in the going out and on the highest top. As with axes in a wood of trees,They are not in trouble as [other] men; Neither are they plagued like [other] men. They are not in trouble as others are; they have no part in the unhappy fate of men.They have not the hardships of mankind, neither are they plagued like [other] men:
Psalms 73:6they have cut down at once the gates thereof, with axe and hatchet they have brought it down.Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; Violence covereth them as a garment. For this reason pride is round them like a chain; they are clothed with violent behaviour as with a robe.Therefore pride encompasseth them as a neck-chain, violence covereth them [as] a garment;
Psalms 73:7They have set fire to thy sanctuary: they have defiled the dwelling place of thy name on the earth.Their eyes stand out with fatness: They have more than heart could wish. Their eyes are bursting with fat; they have more than their heart's desire.Their eyes stand out from fatness, they exceed the imaginations of their heart:
Psalms 73:8They said in their heart, the whole kindred of them together: Let us abolish all the festival days of God from the land.They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression: They speak loftily. Their thoughts are deep with evil designs; their talk from their seats of power is of cruel acts.They mock and speak wickedly of oppression, they speak loftily:
Psalms 73:9Our signs we have not seen, there is now no prophet: and he will know us no more.They have set their mouth in the heavens, And their tongue walketh through the earth. Their mouth goes up to heaven; their tongues go walking through the earth.They set their mouth in the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
Psalms 73:10How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach: is the adversary to provoke thy name for ever?Therefore his people return hither: And waters of a full [cup] are drained by them. For this reason they are full of bread; and water is ever flowing for them.Therefore his people turn hither, and waters in fulness are wrung out to them.
Psalms 73:11Why dost thou turn away thy hand: and thy right hand out of the midst of thy bosom for ever ?And they say, How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High? And they say, How will the Lord see this? is there knowledge in the Most High?And they say, How can ùGod know, and is there knowledge in the Most High?
Psalms 73:12But God is our king before ages: he hath wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.Behold, these are the wicked; And, being alway at ease, they increase in riches. Truly, such are the sinners; they do well at all times, and their wealth is increased.Behold, these are the wicked, and they prosper in the world: they heap up riches.
Psalms 73:13Thou by thy strength didst make the sea firm: thou didst crush the heads of the dragons in the waters.Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocency; As for me, I have made my heart clean to no purpose, washing my hands in righteousness;Truly have I purified my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency:
Psalms 73:14Thou hast broken the heads of the dragon: thou hast given him to be meat for the people of the Ethiopians.For all the day long have I been plagued, And chastened every morning. For I have been troubled all the day; every morning have I undergone punishment.For all the day have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
Psalms 73:15Thou hast broken up the fountains and the torrents: thou hast dried up the Ethan rivers.If I had said, I will speak thus; Behold, I had dealt treacherously with the generation of thy children. If I would make clear what it is like, I would say, You are false to the generation of your children.If I said, I will speak thus, behold, I should be faithless to the generation of thy children.
Psalms 73:16Thine is the day, and thine is the night: thou hast made the morning light and the sun.When I thought how I might know this, It was too painful for me; When my thoughts were turned to see the reason of this, it was a weariness in my eyes;When I thought to be able to know this, it was a grievous task in mine eyes;
Psalms 73:17Thou hast made all the borders of the earth: the summer and the spring were formed by thee.Until I went into the sanctuary of God, And considered their latter end. Till I went into God's holy place, and saw the end of the evil-doers.Until I went into the sanctuaries of ùGod; [then] understood I their end.
Psalms 73:18Remember this, the enemy hath reproached the Lord: and a foolish people hath provoked thy name.Surely thou settest them in slippery places: Thou castest them down to destruction. You put their feet where there was danger of slipping, so that they go down into destruction.Truly thou settest them in slippery places, thou castest them down in ruins.
Psalms 73:19Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to thee: and forget not to the end the souls of thy poor.How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. How suddenly are they wasted! fears are the cause of their destruction.How are they suddenly made desolate! they pass away, consumed with terrors.
Psalms 73:20Have regard to thy covenant: for they that are the obscure of the earth have been filled with dwellings of iniquity.As a dream when one awaketh, So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image. As a dream when one is awake, they are ended; they are like an image gone out of mind when sleep is over.As a dream, when one awaketh, wilt thou, Lord, on arising despise their image.
Psalms 73:21Let not the humble be turned away with confusion: the poor and needy shall praise thy name.For my soul was grieved, And I was pricked in my heart: My heart was made bitter, and I was pained by the bite of grief:When my heart was in a ferment, and I was pricked in my reins,
Psalms 73:22Arise, O God, judge thy own cause: remember thy reproaches with which the foolish man hath reproached thee all the day.So brutish was I, and ignorant; I was [as] a beast before thee. As for me, I was foolish, and without knowledge; I was like a beast before you.Then I was brutish and knew nothing; I was [as] a beast with thee.
Psalms 73:23Forget not the voices of thy enemies: the pride of them that hate thee ascendeth continually.Nevertheless I am continually with thee: Thou hast holden my right hand. But still I am ever with you; you have taken me by my right hand.Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden my right hand;
