| Psalms 73:1 | Understanding for Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast us off unto the end: why is thy wrath enkindled against the sheep of thy pasture? | Surely God is good to Israel, [Even] to such as are pure in heart. | | Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart. |
| Psalms 73:2 | Remember thy congregation, which thou hast possessed from the beginning. The sceptre of thy inheritance which thou hast redeemed: mount Sion in which thou hast dwelt. | But as for me, my feet were almost gone; My steps had well nigh slipped. | | But as for me, my feet were almost gone. My steps had nearly slipped. |
| Psalms 73:3 | Lift up thy hands against their pride unto the end; see what things the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary. | For I was envious at the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. | | For I was envious of the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. |
| Psalms 73:4 | And they that hate thee have made their boasts, in the midst of thy solemnity. They have set up their ensigns for signs, | For there are no pangs in their death; But their strength is firm. | | For there are no struggles in their death, But their strength is firm. |
| Psalms 73:5 | and they knew not both in the going out and on the highest top. As with axes in a wood of trees, | They are not in trouble as [other] men; Neither are they plagued like [other] men. | | They are free from burdens of men, Neither are they plagued like other men. |
| Psalms 73:6 | they have cut down at once the gates thereof, with axe and hatchet they have brought it down. | Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; Violence covereth them as a garment. | | Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment. |
| Psalms 73:7 | They have set fire to thy sanctuary: they have defiled the dwelling place of thy name on the earth. | Their eyes stand out with fatness: They have more than heart could wish. | | Their eyes bulge with fat. Their minds pass the limits of conceit. |
| Psalms 73:8 | They said in their heart, the whole kindred of them together: Let us abolish all the festival days of God from the land. | They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression: They speak loftily. | | They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression. |
| Psalms 73:9 | Our signs we have not seen, there is now no prophet: and he will know us no more. | They have set their mouth in the heavens, And their tongue walketh through the earth. | | They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth. |
| Psalms 73:10 | How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach: is the adversary to provoke thy name for ever? | Therefore his people return hither: And waters of a full [cup] are drained by them. | | Therefore their people return to them, And they drink up waters of abundance. |
| Psalms 73:11 | Why dost thou turn away thy hand: and thy right hand out of the midst of thy bosom for ever ? | And they say, How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High? | | They say, "How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?" |
| Psalms 73:12 | But God is our king before ages: he hath wrought salvation in the midst of the earth. | Behold, these are the wicked; And, being alway at ease, they increase in riches. | | Behold, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches. |
| Psalms 73:13 | Thou by thy strength didst make the sea firm: thou didst crush the heads of the dragons in the waters. | Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocency; | | Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocence, |
| Psalms 73:14 | Thou hast broken the heads of the dragon: thou hast given him to be meat for the people of the Ethiopians. | For all the day long have I been plagued, And chastened every morning. | | For all day long have I been plagued, And punished every morning. |
| Psalms 73:15 | Thou hast broken up the fountains and the torrents: thou hast dried up the Ethan rivers. | If I had said, I will speak thus; Behold, I had dealt treacherously with the generation of thy children. | | If I had said, "I will speak thus;" Behold, I would have betrayed the generation of your children. |
| Psalms 73:16 | Thine is the day, and thine is the night: thou hast made the morning light and the sun. | When I thought how I might know this, It was too painful for me; | | When I tried to understand this, It was too painful for me; |
| Psalms 73:17 | Thou hast made all the borders of the earth: the summer and the spring were formed by thee. | Until I went into the sanctuary of God, And considered their latter end. | | Until I entered God's sanctuary, And considered their latter end. |
| Psalms 73:18 | Remember this, the enemy hath reproached the Lord: and a foolish people hath provoked thy name. | Surely thou settest them in slippery places: Thou castest them down to destruction. | | Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. |
| Psalms 73:19 | Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to thee: and forget not to the end the souls of thy poor. | How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. | | How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors. |
| Psalms 73:20 | Have regard to thy covenant: for they that are the obscure of the earth have been filled with dwellings of iniquity. | As a dream when one awaketh, So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image. | | As a dream when one wakes up, So, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies. |
| Psalms 73:21 | Let not the humble be turned away with confusion: the poor and needy shall praise thy name. | For my soul was grieved, And I was pricked in my heart: | | For my soul was grieved. I was embittered in my heart. |
| Psalms 73:22 | Arise, O God, judge thy own cause: remember thy reproaches with which the foolish man hath reproached thee all the day. | So brutish was I, and ignorant; I was [as] a beast before thee. | | I was so senseless and ignorant. I was a brute beast before you. |
| Psalms 73:23 | Forget not the voices of thy enemies: the pride of them that hate thee ascendeth continually. | Nevertheless I am continually with thee: Thou hast holden my right hand. | | Nevertheless, I am continually with you. You have held my right hand. |
