Proverbs 20:1Wine is a luxurious thing, and drunkenness riotous: whosoever is delighted therewith shell not be wise.Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.
Proverbs 20:2As the roaring of a lion, so also is the dread of a king: he that provoketh him, sinneth against his own soul.The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.
Proverbs 20:3It is an honour for a man to separate himself from quarrels: but all fools are meddling with reproaches.It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling.
Proverbs 20:4Because of the cold the sluggard would not plough: he shall beg therefore in the summer, and it shall not be given him.The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Proverbs 20:5Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water: but a wise man will draw it out.Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out.
Proverbs 20:6Many men are called merciful: but who shall find a faithful man?Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; But a faithful man who can find?
Proverbs 20:7The just that walketh in his simplicity, shall leave behind him blessed children.A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, Blessed are his children after him.
Proverbs 20:8The king, that sitteth on the throne of judgment, scattereth away all evil with his look.A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment Scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Proverbs 20:9Who can say: My heart is clean, I am pure from sin?Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Proverbs 20:10Diverse weights and diverse measures, both are abominable before God.Diverse weights, and diverse measures, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.
Proverbs 20:11By his inclinations a child is known, if his works be clean and right.Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Proverbs 20:12The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made them both.The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.
Proverbs 20:13Love not sleep, lest poverty oppress thee: open thy eyes, and be filled with bread.Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; Open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Proverbs 20:14It is nought, it is nought, saith every buyer: and when he is gone away, then he will boast.It is bad, it is bad, saith the buyer; But when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
Proverbs 20:15There is gold, and a multitude of jewels: but the lips of knowledge are a precious vessel.There is gold, and abundance of rubies; But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Proverbs 20:16Take away the garment of him that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge from him for strangers.Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge [that is surety] for foreigners.
Proverbs 20:17The bread of lying is sweet to a man: but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Proverbs 20:18Designs are strengthened by counsels: and wars are to be managed by governments.Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war.
Proverbs 20:19Meddle not with him that revealeth secrets, and walketh deceitfully, and openeth wide his lips.He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips.
Proverbs 20:20He that curseth his father, and mother, his lamp shall be put out in the midst of darkness.Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.
Proverbs 20:21The inheritance gotten hastily in the beginning, in the end shall be without a blessing.An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; But the end thereof shall not be blessed.
Proverbs 20:22Say not: I will return evil: wait for the Lord and he will deliver thee.Say not thou, I will recompense evil: Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee.
Proverbs 20:23Diverse weights are an abomination before the Lord: a deceitful balance is not good.Diverse weights are an abomination to Jehovah; And a false balance is not good.
Proverbs 20:24The steps of man are guided by the Lord: but who is the man that can understand his own way?A man's goings are of Jehovah; How then can man understand his way?
Proverbs 20:25It is ruin to a man to devour holy ones, and after vows to retract.It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, And after vows to make inquiry.
Proverbs 20:26A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth over them the wheel.A wise king winnoweth the wicked, And bringeth the [threshing] -wheel over them.
Proverbs 20:27The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, which searcheth all the hidden things of the bowels.The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, Searching all his innermost parts.
Proverbs 20:28Mercy and truth preserve the king, and his throne is strengthened by clemency.Kindness and truth preserve the king; And his throne is upholden by kindness.
Proverbs 20:29The joy of young men is their strength: and the dignity of old men, their grey hairs.The glory of young men is their strength; And the beauty of old men is the hoary head.
Proverbs 20:30The blueness of a wound shall wipe away evils: and stripes in the more in- ward parts of the belly.Stripes that wound cleanse away evil; And strokes [reach] the innermost parts.
