| Isaiah 41:1 | Let the islands keep silence before me, and the nations take new strength: let them come near, and then speak, let us come near to judgment together. | Come quietly before me, O sea-lands, and let the peoples get together their strength: let them come near; then let them say what they have to say: let us put forward our cause against one another. |
| Isaiah 41:2 | Who hath raised up the just one from the east, hath called him to follow him? he shall give the nations in his sight, and he shall rule over kings: he shall give them as the dust to his sword, as stubble driven by the wind, to his bow. | Who sent out from the east one who is right wherever he goes? he gives the nations into his hands, and makes him ruler over kings; he gives them as the dust to his sword, as dry stems before the wind to his bow. |
| Isaiah 41:3 | He shall pursue them, he shall pass in peace, no path shall appear after his feet. | He goes after them safely, not touching the road with his feet. |
| Isaiah 41:4 | Who hath wrought and done these things, calling the generations from the beginning? I the Lord, I am the first and the last. | Whose purpose and work was it? His who sent out the generations from the start. I the Lord, the first, and with the last, I am he. |
| Isaiah 41:5 | The islands saw it, and feared, the ends of the earth were astonished, they drew near, and came. | The sea-lands saw it, and were in fear; the ends of the earth were shaking: they came near. |
| Isaiah 41:6 | Every one shall help his neighbour, and shall say to his brother: Be of good courage. | They gave help everyone to his neighbour; and everyone said to his brother, Take heart! |
| Isaiah 41:7 | The coppersmith striking with the hammer encouraged him that forged at that time, saying: It is ready for soldering: and he strengthened it with nails, that it should not be moved. | So the metal-worker put heart into the gold-worker, and he who was hammering the metal smooth said kind words to the iron-worker, saying of the plate, It is ready: and he put it together with nails, so that there might be no slipping. |
| Isaiah 41:8 | But thou Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend: | But as for you, Israel, my servant, and you, Jacob, whom I have taken for myself, the seed of Abraham my friend: |
| Isaiah 41:9 | In whom I have taken thee from the ends of the earth, and from the remote parts thereof have called thee, and said to thee: Thou art my servant, I have chosen thee, and have not cast thee away. | You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and sent for from its farthest parts, saying to you, You are my servant, whom I have taken for myself, and whom I have not given up: |
| Isaiah 41:10 | Fear not, for I am with thee: turn not aside, for I am thy God: I have strengthened thee, and have helped thee, and the right hand of my just one hath upheld thee. | Have no fear, for I am with you; do not be looking about in trouble, for I am your God; I will give you strength, yes, I will be your helper; yes, my true right hand will be your support. |
| Isaiah 41:11 | Behold all that fight against thee shall be confounded and ashamed, they shall be as nothing, and the men shall perish that strive against thee. | Truly, all those who are angry with you will be made low and put to shame: those desiring to do you wrong will come to nothing and never again be seen. |
| Isaiah 41:12 | Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find the men that resist thee: they shall be as nothing: and as a thing consumed the men that war against thee. | You will make search for your haters but they will not be there; those who make war against you will be as nothing and will come to destruction. |
| Isaiah 41:13 | For I am the Lord thy God, who take thee by the hand, and say to thee: Fear not, I have helped thee. | For I, the Lord your God, have taken your right hand in mine, saying to you, Have no fear; I will be your helper. |
| Isaiah 41:14 | Fear not, thou worm of Jacob, you that are dead of Israel: I have helped thee, saith the Lord: and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel. | Have no fear, you worm Jacob, and you men of Israel; I will be your helper, says the Lord, even he who takes up your cause, the Holy One of Israel. |
| Isaiah 41:15 | I have made thee as a new thrashing wain, with teeth like a saw: thou shall thrash the mountains, and break them in pieces: and shalt make the hills as chaff. | See, I will make you like a new grain-crushing instrument with teeth, crushing the mountains small, and making the hills like dry stems. |
| Isaiah 41:16 | Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, in the Holy One of Israel thou shalt be joyful. | You will send the wind over them, and it will take them away; they will go in all directions before the storm-wind: you will have joy in the Lord, and be glad in the Holy One of Israel. |
| Isaiah 41:17 | The needy and the poor seek for waters, and there are none: their tongue hath been dry with thirst. I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. | The poor and crushed are looking for water where no water is, and their tongue is dry for need of it: I the Lord will give ear to their prayer, I the God of Israel will not give them up. |
| Isaiah 41:18 | I will open rivers in the high bills, and fountains in the midst of the plains: I will turn the desert into pools of waters, and the impassable land into streams of waters. | I will make rivers on the dry mountain-tops, and fountains in the valleys: I will make the waste land a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. |
| Isaiah 41:19 | I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, and the thorn, and the myrtle, and the olive tree: I will set in the desert the fir tree, the elm, and the box tree together: | I will put in the waste land the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive-tree; and in the lowland will be planted the fir-tree, the plane, and the cypress together: |
| Isaiah 41:20 | That they may see and know, and consider, and understand together that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it. | So that they may see and be wise and give their mind to it, and that it may be clear to them all that the hand of the Lord has done this, and that the Holy One of Israel has made it. |
| Isaiah 41:21 | Bring your cause near, saith the Lord: bring hither, if you have any thing to allege, saith the King of Jacob. | Put forward your cause, says the Lord; let your strong argument come out, says the King of Jacob. |
| Isaiah 41:22 | Let them come, and tell us all things that are to come: tell us the former things what they were: and we will set our heart upon them, and shall know the latter end of them, and tell us the things that are to come. | Let the future be made clear to us: give us news of the past things, so that we may give thought to them; or of the things to come, so that we may see if they are true. |
| Isaiah 41:23 | Shew the things that are to come hereafter, and we shall know that ye are gods. Do ye also good or evil, if you can: and let us speak, and see together. | Give us word of what will be after this, so that we may be certain that you are gods: yes, do good or do evil, so that we may all see it and be surprised. |
| Isaiah 41:24 | Behold, you are of nothing, and your work of that which hath no being: he that hath chosen you is an abomination. | But you are nothing, and your work is of no value: foolish is he who takes you for his gods. |
| Isaiah 41:25 | I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come from the rising of the sun: he shall call upon my name, and he shall make princes to be as dirt, and as the potter treading clay. | I have sent for one from the north, and from the dawn he has come; in my name he will get rulers together and go against them; they will be like dust, even as the wet earth is stamped on by the feet of the potter. |
| Isaiah 41:26 | Who bath declared from the beginning, that we may know: and from time of old, that we may say: Thou art just. There is none that sheweth, nor that foretelleth, nor that heareth your words. | Who has given knowledge of it from the first, so that we may be certain of it? and from the start, so that we may say, His word is true? There is no one who gives news, or says anything, or who gives ear to your words. |
| Isaiah 41:27 | The first shall say to Sion: Behold they are here, and to Jerusalem I will give an evangelist. | I was the first to give word of it to Zion, and I gave the good news to Jerusalem. |
| Isaiah 41:28 | And I saw, and there was no one even among them to consult, or who, when I asked, could answer a word. | And I saw that there was no man, even no wise man among them, who might give an answer to my questions. |
| Isaiah 41:29 | Behold they are all in the wrong, and their works are vain: their idols are wind and vanity. | Truly they are all nothing, their works are nothing and of no value: their metal images are of no more use than wind. |
