| Psalms 40:1 | Unto the end, a psalm for David himself. | | <To the chief music-maker. Of David. A Psalm.> When I was waiting quietly for the Lord, his heart was turned to me, and he gave ear to my cry. | To the Overseer. A Psalm of David. I have diligently expected Jehovah, And He inclineth to me, and heareth my cry, |
| Psalms 40:2 | Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor : the Lord will deliver him in the evil day. | | He took me up out of a deep waste place, out of the soft and sticky earth; he put my feet on a rock, and made my steps certain. | And He doth cause me to come up From a pit of desolation from mire of mud, And He raiseth up on a rock my feet, He is establishing my steps. |
| Psalms 40:3 | The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth : and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies. | | And he put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God; numbers have seen it with fear, and put their faith in the Lord. | And He putteth in my mouth a new song, `Praise to our God.` Many do see and fear, and trust in Jehovah. |
| Psalms 40:4 | The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow : thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness. | | Happy is the man who has faith in the Lord, and does not give honour to the men of pride or to those who are turned away to deceit. | O the happiness of the man Who hath made Jehovah his trust, And hath not turned unto the proud, And those turning aside to lies. |
| Psalms 40:5 | I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me : heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee. | | O Lord my God, great are the wonders which you have done in your thought for us; it is not possible to put them out in order before you; when I would give an account of them, their number is greater than I may say. | Much hast Thou done, Jehovah my God; Thy wonders and Thy thoughts toward us, There is none to arrange unto Thee, I declare and speak: They have been more than to be numbered. |
| Psalms 40:6 | My enemies have spoken evils against me: when shall he die and his name perish? | | You had no desire for offerings of beasts or fruits of the earth; ears you made for me: for burned offerings and sin offerings you made no request. | Sacrifice and present Thou hast not desired, Ears Thou hast prepared for me, Burnt and sin-offering Thou hast not asked. |
| Psalms 40:7 | And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things : his heart gathered together iniquity to itself. He went out and spoke to the same purpose. | | Then I said, See, I come; it is recorded of me in the roll of the book, | Then said I, `Lo, I have come,` In the roll of the book it is written of me, |
| Psalms 40:8 | All my enemies whispered together against me : they devised evils to me. | | My delight is to do your pleasure, O my God; truly, your law is in my heart. | To do Thy pleasure, my God, I have delighted, And Thy law [is] within my heart. |
| Psalms 40:9 | They determined against me an unjust word : shall he that sleepeth rise again no more? | | I have given news of righteousness in the great meeting; O Lord, you have knowledge that I have not kept back my words. | I have proclaimed tidings of righteousness In the great assembly, lo, my lips I restrain not, O Jehovah, Thou hast known. |
| Psalms 40:10 | For even the man of peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me. | | Your righteousness has not been folded away in my heart; I have made clear your true word and your salvation; I have not kept secret your mercy or your faith from the great meeting. | Thy righteousness I have not concealed In the midst of my heart, Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation I have told, I have not hidden Thy kindness and Thy truth, To the great assembly. |
| Psalms 40:11 | But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again : and I will requite them. | | Take not away your gentle mercies from me, O Lord; let your mercy and your faith keep me safe for ever. | Thou, O Jehovah, restrainest not Thy mercies from me, Thy kindness and Thy truth do continually keep me. |
| Psalms 40:12 | By this I know, that thou hast had a good will for me : because my enemy shall not rejoice over me. | | For unnumbered evils are round about me; my sins have overtaken me, so that I am bent down with their weight; they are more than the hairs of my head, my strength is gone because of them. | For compassed me have evils innumerable, Overtaken me have mine iniquities, And I have not been able to see; They have been more than the hairs of my head, And my heart hath forsaken me. |
| Psalms 40:13 | But thou hast upheld me by reason of my innocence : and hast established me in thy sight for ever. | | Be pleased, O Lord, to take me out of danger; O Lord, come quickly and give me help. | Be pleased, O Jehovah, to deliver me, O Jehovah, for my help make haste. |
| Psalms 40:14 | Blessed by the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity. So be it. So be it. | | Let those who go after my soul for its destruction have shame and trouble together; let them be turned back and made foolish who take pleasure in my trouble. | They are ashamed and confounded together, Who are seeking my soul to destroy it, They are turned backward, And are ashamed, who are desiring my evil. |
