1st-Corinthians 8:1Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but love edifieth. Now about things offered to images: we all seem to ourselves to have knowledge. Knowledge gives pride, but love gives true strength.Now as to things which have been sacrificed to idols. This is a subject which we already understand because we all have knowledge of it. Knowledge, however, tends to make people conceited; it is love that builds us up.
1st-Corinthians 8:2And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.If any man thinketh that he knoweth anything, he knoweth not yet as he ought to know; If anyone seems to himself to have knowledge, so far he has not the right sort of knowledge about anything;If any one imagines that he already possesses any true knowledge, he has as yet attained to no knowledge of the kind to which he ought to have attained;
1st-Corinthians 8:3But if any man love God, the same is known of him.but if any man loveth God, the same is known by him. But if anyone has love for God, God has knowledge of him.but if any one loves God, that man is known by God.
1st-Corinthians 8:4As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.Concerning therefore the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is [anything] in the world, and that there is no God but one. So, then, as to the question of taking food offered to images, we are certain that an image is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but one.As to eating things which have been sacrificed to idols, we are fully aware that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but One.
1st-Corinthians 8:5For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth; as there are gods many, and lords many; For though there are those who have the name of gods, in heaven or on earth, as there are a number of gods and a number of lords,For if so-called gods do exist, either in Heaven or on earth and in fact there are many such gods and many such lords
1st-Corinthians 8:6But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him. There is for us only one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we are for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we have our being through him.yet *we* have but one God, the Father, who is the source of all things and for whose service we exist, and but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom we and all things exist.
1st-Corinthians 8:7Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.Howbeit there is not in all men that knowledge: but some, being used until now to the idol, eat as [of] a thing sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. Still, all men have not that knowledge: but some, being used till now to the image, are conscious that they are taking food which has been offered to the image; and because they are not strong in the faith, their minds are troubled.But all believers do not recognize these facts. Some, from force of habit in relation to the idol, even now eat idol sacrifices as such, and their consciences, being but weak, are polluted.
1st-Corinthians 8:8But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.But food will not commend us to God: neither, if we eat not, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better. But God's approval of us is not based on the food we take: if we do not take it we are no worse for it; and if we take it we are no better.It is true that a particular kind of food will not bring us into God's presence; we are neither inferior to others if we abstain from it, nor superior to them if we eat it.
1st-Corinthians 8:9But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to the weak. But take care that this power of yours does not give cause for trouble to the feeble.But take care lest this liberty of yours should prove a hindrance to the progress of weak believers.
1st-Corinthians 8:10For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;For if a man see thee who hast knowledge sitting at meat in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols? For if a man sees you, who have knowledge, taking food as a guest in the house of an image, will it not give him, if he is feeble, the idea that he may take food offered to images?For if any one were to see you, who know the real truth of this matter, reclining at table in an idol's temple, would not his conscience (supposing him to be a weak believer) be emboldened to eat the food which has been sacrificed to the idol?
1st-Corinthians 8:11And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?For through thy knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother for whose sake Christ died. And so, through your knowledge, you are the cause of destruction to your brother, for whom Christ underwent death.Why, your knowledge becomes the ruin of the weak believer your brother, for whom Christ died!
1st-Corinthians 8:12But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.And thus, sinning against the brethren, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, ye sin against Christ. And in this way, doing evil to the brothers, and causing trouble to those whose faith is feeble, you are sinning against Christ.Moreover when you thus sin against the brethren and wound their weak consciences, you are, in reality, sinning against Christ.
1st-Corinthians 8:13Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.Wherefore, if meat causeth my brother to stumble, I will eat no flesh for evermore, that I cause not my brother to stumble. For this reason, if food is a cause of trouble to my brother, I will give up taking meat for ever, so that I may not be a cause of trouble to my brother.Therefore if what I eat causes my brother to fall, never again to the end of my days will I touch any kind of animal food, for fear I should cause my brother to fall.
