Proverbs 20:1Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise. Wine makes men foolish, and strong drink makes men come to blows; and whoever comes into error through these is not wise.Wine [is] a scorner strong drink [is] noisy, And any going astray in it is not wise.
Proverbs 20:2The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life. The wrath of a king is like the loud cry of a lion: he who makes him angry does wrong against himself.The fear of a king [is] a growl as of a young lion, He who is causing him to be wroth is wronging his soul.
Proverbs 20:3It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling. It is an honour for a man to keep from fighting, but the foolish are ever at war.An honour to a man is cessation from strife, And every fool intermeddleth.
Proverbs 20:4The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing. The hater of work will not do his ploughing because of the winter; so at the time of grain-cutting he will be requesting food and will get nothing.Because of winter the slothful plougheth not, He asketh in harvest, and there is nothing.
Proverbs 20:5Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out. The purpose in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of good sense will get it out.Counsel in the heart of a man [is] deep water, And a man of understanding draweth it up.
Proverbs 20:6Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; But a faithful man who can find? Most men make no secret of their kind acts: but where is a man of good faith to be seen?A multitude of men proclaim each his kindness, And a man of stedfastness who doth find?
Proverbs 20:7The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, Blessed are his children after him. An upright man goes on in his righteousness: happy are his children after him!The righteous is walking habitually in his integrity, O the happiness of his sons after him!
Proverbs 20:8A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment Scattereth away all evil with his eyes. A king on the seat of judging puts to flight all evil with his eyes.A king sitting on a throne of judgment, Is scattering with his eyes all evil,
Proverbs 20:9Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? Who is able to say, I have made my heart clean, I am free from my sin?Who saith, `I have purified my heart, I have been cleansed from my sin?`
Proverbs 20:10Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.Diverse weights, and diverse measures, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah. Unequal weights and unequal measures, they are all disgusting to the Lord.A stone and a stone, an ephah and an ephah, Even both of them [are] an abomination to Jehovah.
Proverbs 20:11Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. Even a child may be judged by his doings, if his work is free from sin and if it is right.Even by his actions a youth maketh himself known, Whether his work be pure or upright.

Proverbs 20:14It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.It is bad, it is bad, saith the buyer; But when he is gone his way, then he boasteth. A poor thing, a poor thing, says he who is giving money for goods: but when he has gone on his way, then he makes clear his pride in what he has got.`Bad, bad,` saith the buyer, And going his way then he boasteth himself.
Proverbs 20:15There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.There is gold, and abundance of rubies; But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. There is gold and a store of corals: but the lips of knowledge are a jewel of great price.Substance, gold, and a multitude of rubies, Yea, a precious vessel, [are] lips of knowledge.
Proverbs 20:16Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge [that is surety] for foreigners. Take a man's clothing if he makes himself responsible for a strange man, and get an undertaking from him who gives his word for strange men.Take his garment when a stranger hath been surety, And for strangers pledge it.
Proverbs 20:17Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but after, his mouth will be full of sand.Sweet to a man [is] the bread of falsehood, And afterwards is his mouth filled [with] gravel.
Proverbs 20:18Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war. Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war. Every purpose is put into effect by wise help: and by wise guiding make war.Purposes by counsel thou dost establish, And with plans make thou war.
Proverbs 20:19He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips. He who goes about talking of the business of others gives away secrets: so have nothing to do with him whose lips are open wide.A revealer of secret counsels is the busybody, And for a deceiver [with] his lips make not thyself surety.
Proverbs 20:20Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness. If anyone puts a curse on his father or his mother, his light will be put out in the blackest night.Whoso is vilifying his father and his mother, Extinguished is his lamp in blackness of darkness.
Proverbs 20:21An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; But the end thereof shall not be blessed. A heritage may be got quickly at first, but the end of it will not be a blessing.An inheritance gotten wrongly at first, Even its latter end is not blessed.
Proverbs 20:22Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.Say not thou, I will recompense evil: Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee. Do not say, I will give punishment for evil: go on waiting for the Lord, and he will be your saviour.Do not say, `I recompense evil,` Wait for Jehovah, and He delivereth thee.
Proverbs 20:23Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.Diverse weights are an abomination to Jehovah; And a false balance is not good. Unequal weights are disgusting to the Lord, and false scales are not good.An abomination to Jehovah [are] a stone and a stone, And balances of deceit [are] not good.
Proverbs 20:24Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?A man's goings are of Jehovah; How then can man understand his way? A man's steps are of the Lord; how then may a man have knowledge of his way?From Jehovah [are] the steps of a man, And man how understandeth he his way?
Proverbs 20:25It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, And after vows to make inquiry. It is a danger to a man to say without thought, It is holy, and, after taking his oaths, to be questioning if it is necessary to keep them.A snare to a man [is] he hath swallowed a holy thing, And after vows to make inquiry.
Proverbs 20:26A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.A wise king winnoweth the wicked, And bringeth the [threshing] -wheel over them. A wise king puts evil-doers to flight, and makes their evil-doing come back on them.A wise king is scattering the wicked, And turneth back on them the wheel.
Proverbs 20:27The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, Searching all his innermost parts. The Lord keeps watch over the spirit of man, searching all the deepest parts of the body.The breath of man [is] a lamp of Jehovah, Searching all the inner parts of the heart.
Proverbs 20:28Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.Kindness and truth preserve the king; And his throne is upholden by kindness. Mercy and good faith keep the king safe, and the seat of his power is based on upright acts.Kindness and truth keep a king, And he hath supported by kindness his throne.
Proverbs 20:29The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.The glory of young men is their strength; And the beauty of old men is the hoary head. The glory of young men is their strength, and the honour of old men is their grey hairs.The beauty of young men is their strength, And the honour of old men is grey hairs.
Proverbs 20:30The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.Stripes that wound cleanse away evil; And strokes [reach] the innermost parts. By the wounds of the rod evil is taken away, and blows make clean the deepest parts of the body.The bandages of a wound thou removest with the evil, Also the plagues of the inner parts of the heart!
