| Isaiah 9:1 | Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. | Nevertheless the darkness shall not be as when the distress was in the [land], at the time he at first lightly, and afterwards heavily, visited the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations: | In earlier times he made the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali of small value, but after that he gave it glory, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations. | At the first time the land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephtali was lightly touched: and at the last the way of the sea beyond the Jordan of the Galilee of the Gentiles was heavily loaded. |
| Isaiah 9:2 | The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. | the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them light hath shone. | The people who went in the dark have seen a great light, and for those who were living in the land of the deepest night, the light is shining. | The people that walked in darkness, have seen a great light: to them that dwelt in the region of the shadow of death, light is risen. |
| Isaiah 9:3 | Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. | Thou hast multiplied the nation, hast increased its joy: they joy before thee like to the joy in harvest; as [men] rejoice when they divide the spoil. | You have made them very glad, increasing their joy. They are glad before you as men are glad in the time of getting in the grain, or when they make division of the goods taken in war. | Thou hast multiplied the nation, and hast not increased the joy. They shall rejoice before thee, as they that rejoice in the harvest, as conquerors rejoice after taking a prey, when they divide the spoils. |
| Isaiah 9:4 | For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. | For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. | For by your hand the yoke on his neck and the rod on his back, even the rod of his cruel master, have been broken, as in the day of Midian. | For the yoke of their burden, and the rod of their shoulder, and the sceptre of their oppressor thou best overcome, as in the day of Median. |
| Isaiah 9:5 | For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. | For every boot of him that is shod for the tumult, and the garment rolled in blood, shall be for burning, fuel for fire. | For every boot of the man of war with his sounding step, and the clothing rolled in blood, will be for burning, food for the fire. | For every violent taking of spoils, with tumult, and garment mingled with blood, shall be burnt, and be fuel for the fire. |
| Isaiah 9:6 | For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. | For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name is called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty ùGod, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace. | For to us a child has come, to us a son is given; and the government has been placed in his hands; and he has been named Wise Guide, Strong God, Father for ever, Prince of Peace. | For a CHILD IS BORN to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace. |
| Isaiah 9:7 | Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. | Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with judgment and with righteousness, from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this. | Of the increase of his rule and of peace there will be no end, on the seat of David, and in his kingdom; to make it strong, supporting it with wise decision and righteousness, now and for ever. By the fixed purpose of the Lord of armies this will be done. | His empire shall be multiplied, and there shall be no end of peace: he shall sit upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom; to establish it and strengthen it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth and for ever: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. |
| Isaiah 9:8 | The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. | The Lord sent a word unto Jacob, and it lighteth upon Israel. | The Lord has sent a word to Jacob, and it has come on Israel; | The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. |
| Isaiah 9:9 | And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart, | And all the people shall know [it], Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and stoutness of heart, | And all the people will have experience of it, even Ephraim and the men of Samaria, who say in the pride of their uplifted hearts, | And all the people of Ephraim shall know, and the inhabitants of Samaria that say in the pride and haughtiness of their heart: |
| Isaiah 9:10 | The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. | The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamore trees are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars. | The bricks have come down, but we will put up buildings of cut stone in their place: the sycamores are cut down, but they will be changed to cedars. | The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with square stones: they have cut down the sycamores, but we will change them for cedars. |
| Isaiah 9:11 | Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together; | And Jehovah will set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and arm his enemies, | For this cause the Lord has made strong the haters of Israel, driving them on to make war against him; | And the Lord shall set up the enemies of Rasin over him, and shall bring on his enemies in a crowd: |
| Isaiah 9:12 | The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. | the Syrians on the east, and the Philistines on the west; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. | Aram on the east, and the Philistines on the west, who have come against Israel with open mouths. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. | The Syrians from the east, and the Philistines from the west: and they shall devour Israel with open mouth, For all this his indignation is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. |
| Isaiah 9:13 | For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts. | But the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, and they do not seek Jehovah of hosts. | But the heart of the people was not turned to him who sent punishment on them, and they made no prayer to the Lord of armies. | And the people are not returned to him who hath struck them, and have not sought after the Lord of hosts. |
| Isaiah 9:14 | Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. | And Jehovah will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day: | For this cause the Lord took away from Israel head and tail, high and low, in one day. | And the Lord shall destroy out of Israel the head and the tail, him that bendeth down, and him that holdeth back, in one day. |
| Isaiah 9:15 | The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. | the ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. | The man who is honoured and responsible is the head, and the prophet who gives false teaching is the tail. | The aged and honourable, he is the head: and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. |
| Isaiah 9:16 | For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. | For the guides of this people mislead [them]; and they that are guided by them are swallowed up. | For the guides of this people are the cause of their wandering from the right way, and those who are guided by them come to destruction. | And they that call this people blessed, shall cause them to err: and they that are called blessed, shall be thrown down headlong. |
| Isaiah 9:17 | Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. | Therefore the Lord will not rejoice in their young men, neither will he have mercy on their fatherless and on their widows; for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. | For this cause the Lord will have no pleasure in their young men, and no pity on their widows and the children without fathers: for they are all haters of God and evil-doers, and foolish words come from every mouth. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. | Therefore the Lord shell have no joy in their young men: neither shall he have mercy on their fatherless, and widows: for every one is a hypocrite and wicked, and every mouth hath spoken folly. For all this his indignation is not turned away, but his bend is stretched out still. |
| Isaiah 9:18 | For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke. | For wickedness burneth as a fire: it devoureth briars and thorns, and kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they go rolling up like a pillar of smoke. | For evil was burning like a fire; the blackberries and thorns were burned up; the thick woods took fire, rolling up in dark clouds of smoke. | For wickedness is kindled as a fire, it shall devour the brier and the thorn: and shall kindle in the thicket of the forest, and it shall be wrapped up in smoke ascending on high. |
| Isaiah 9:19 | Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother. | Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burned up, and the people is as fuel for fire: a man spareth not his brother; | The land was dark with the wrath of the Lord of armies: the people were like those who take men's flesh for food. | By the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is troubled, and the people shall be as fuel for the fire: no man shall spare his brother. |
| Isaiah 9:20 | And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm: | and he snatcheth on the right hand, and is hungry, and eateth on the left hand; and they are not satisfied. They eat every man the flesh of his own arm: | On the right a man was cutting off bits and was still in need; on the left a man took a meal but had not enough; no man had pity on his brother; every man was making a meal of the flesh of his neighbour. | And he shall turn to the right hand, and shall be hungry: and shall eat on the left hand, and shall not be filled: every one shell eat the flesh of his own arm: Manasses Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasses, and they together shall be against Juda. |
| Isaiah 9:21 | Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. | Manasseh, Ephraim, and Ephraim, Manasseh; [and] they together are against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. | Manasseh was making a meal of Ephraim, and Ephraim of Manasseh; and together they were attacking Judah. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. | After all these things his indignation is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. |
