| 2nd-Timothy 2:1 | You then, my child, must be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. | So then, my child, be strong in the grace which is in Christ Jesus. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:2 | All that you have been taught by me in the hearing of many witnesses, you must hand on to trusty men who shall themselves, in turn, be competent to instruct others also. | And the things which I have said to you before a number of witnesses, give to those of the faith, so that they may be teachers of others. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:3 | As a good soldier of Christ Jesus accept your share of suffering. | Be ready to do without the comforts of life, as one of the army of Christ Jesus. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:4 | Every one who serves as a soldier keeps himself from becoming entangled in the world's business so that he may satisfy the officer who enlisted him. | A fighting man, when he is with the army, keeps himself free from the business of this life so that he may be pleasing to him who has taken him into his army. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:5 | And if any one takes part in an athletic contest, he gets no prize unless he obeys the rules. | And if a man takes part in a competition he does not get the crown if he has not kept the rules. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:6 | The harvestman who labours in the field must be the first to get a share of the crop. | It is right for the worker in the fields to be the first to take of the fruit. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:7 | Mark well what I am saying: the Lord will give you discernment in everything. | Give thought to what I say; for the Lord will give you wisdom in all things. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:8 | Never forget that Jesus Christ has risen from among the dead and is a descendant of David, as is declared in the Good News which I preach. | Keep in mind Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, who came back from the dead, as my good news gives witness: |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:9 | For preaching the Good News I suffer, and am even put in chains, as if I were a criminal: yet the word of God is not imprisoned. | In which I put up with the hardest conditions, even prison chains, like one who has done a crime; but the word of God is not in chains. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:10 | For this reason I endure all things for the sake of God's own people; so that they also may obtain salvation even the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. | But I undergo all things for the saints, so that they may have salvation in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:11 | Faithful is the saying: "If we died with Him, we shall also live with Him; | This is a true saying: If we undergo death with him, then will we be living with him: |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:12 | "If we patiently endure pain, we shall also share His Kingship; "If we disown Him, He will also disown us; | If we go on to the end, then we will be ruling with him: if we say we have no knowledge of him, then he will say he has no knowledge of us: |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:13 | "And even if *our* faith fails, He remains true He cannot prove false to Himself." | If we are without faith, still he keeps faith, for he will never be untrue to himself. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:14 | Bring all this to men's remembrances, solemnly charging them in the presence of God not to waste time in wrangling about mere words, a course which is altogether unprofitable and tends only to the ruin of the hearers. | Put these things before them, giving them orders in the name of the Lord to keep themselves from fighting about words, which is of no profit, only causing error in their hearers. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:15 | Earnestly seek to commend yourself to God as a servant who, because of his straightforward dealing with the word of truth, has no reason to feel any shame. | Let it be your care to get the approval of God, as a workman who has no cause for shame, giving the true word in the right way. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:16 | But from irreligious and frivolous talk hold aloof, for those who indulge in it will proceed from bad to worse in impiety, | But take no part in wrong and foolish talk, for those who do so will go farther into evil, |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:17 | and their teaching will spread like a running sore. Hymenaeus and Philetus are men of that stamp. | And their words will be like poisoned wounds in the flesh: such are Hymenaeus and Philetus; |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:18 | In the matter of the truth they have gone astray, saying that the Resurrection is already past, and so they are overthrowing the faith of some. | Men whose ideas are all false, who say that the coming back from the dead has even now taken place, overturning the faith of some. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:19 | Yet God's solid foundation stands unmoved, bearing this inscription, "The Lord knows those who really belong to Him." And this also, "Let every one who names the Name of the Lord renounce all wickedness." | But God's strong base is unchanging, having this sign, The Lord has knowledge of those who are his: and, Let everyone by whom the name of the Lord is named be turned away from evil. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:20 | Now in a great house there are not only articles of gold and silver, but also others of wood and of earthenware; and some are for specially honourable, and others for common use. | Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but others of wood and earth, and some which are honoured and some without honour. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:21 | If therefore a man keeps himself clear of these latter, he himself will be for specially honourable use, consecrated, fit for the Master's service, and fully equipped for every good work. | If a man makes himself clean from these, he will be a vessel for honour, made holy, ready for the master's use, ready for every good work. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:22 | Keep a strong curb, however, on your youthful cravings; and strive for integrity, good faith, love, peace, in company with all who pray to the Lord with pure hearts. | But keep yourself from those desires of the flesh which are strong when the body is young, and go after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those whose prayers go up to the Lord from a clean heart. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:23 | But avoid foolish discussions with ignorant men, knowing as you do that these lead to quarrels; | And put away foolish and uncontrolled questionings, seeing that they are a cause of trouble. |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:24 | and a bondservant of the Lord must not quarrel, but must be inoffensive towards all men, a skilful teacher, and patient under wrongs. | For it is not right for the Lord's servant to make trouble, but he is to be gentle to all, ready in teaching, putting up with wrong, |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:25 | He must speak in a gentle tone when correcting the errors of opponents, in the hope that God will at last give them repentance, for them to come to a full knowledge of the truth | Gently guiding those who go against the teaching; if by chance God may give them a change of heart and true knowledge, |
| 2nd-Timothy 2:26 | and recover sober-mindedness and freedom from the Devil's snare, though they are now entrapped by him to do his will. | And so they may get themselves free from the net of the Evil One, being made the prisoners of the Lord's servant, for the purpose of God. |
