When the Philistines took him in Gath.> Have mercy on me, O God, for man is attempting my destruction; every day he makes cruel attacks against me. | To the Overseer. `On the Dumb Dove far off.` A secret treasure of David, in the Philistines` taking hold of him in Gath. Favour me, O God, for man swallowed me up, All the day fighting he oppresseth me, | To the chief Musician upon Jonathelem-rechokim, Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath. Be merciful to me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. |
| Psalms 56:2 | My enemies want to swallow me up all day long, For they are many who fight proudly against me. | My haters are ever ready to put an end to me; great numbers are lifting themselves up against me. | Mine enemies have swallowed up all the day, For many [are] fighting against me, O most High, | My enemies would daily swallow me up: for they are many that fight against me, O thou Most High. |
| Psalms 56:3 | When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. | In the time of my fear, I will have faith in you. | The day I am afraid I am confident toward Thee. | In the time when I am afraid, I will trust in thee. |
| Psalms 56:4 | In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? | In God will I give praise to his word; in God have I put my hope; I will have no fear of what flesh may do to me. | In God I praise His word, in God I have trusted, I fear not what flesh doth to me. | In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do to me. |
| Psalms 56:5 | All day long they twist my words. All their thoughts are against me for evil. | Every day they make wrong use of my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil. | All the day they wrest my words, Concerning me all their thoughts [are] for evil, | Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil. |
| Psalms 56:6 | They conspire and lurk, Watching my steps, they are eager to take my life. | They come together, they are waiting in secret places, they take note of my steps, they are waiting for my soul. | They assemble, they hide, they watch my heels, When they have expected my soul. | They assemble themselves, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul. |
| Psalms 56:7 | Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, God. | By evil-doing they will not get free from punishment. In wrath, O God, let the peoples be made low. | By iniquity they escape, In anger the peoples put down, O God. | Shall they escape by iniquity; in thy anger cast down the people, O God. |
| Psalms 56:8 | You number my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren't they in your book? | You have seen my wanderings; put the drops from my eyes into your bottle; are they not in your record? | My wandering Thou hast counted, Thou place Thou my tear in Thy bottle, Are they not in Thy book? | Thou numberest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? |
| Psalms 56:9 | Then shall my enemies turn back in the day that I call. I know this, that God is for me. | When I send up my cry to you, my haters will be turned back; I am certain of this, for God is with me. | Then turn back do mine enemies in the day I call. This I have known, that God [is] for me. | When I cry to thee, then shall my enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. |
| Psalms 56:10 | In God, I will praise his word. In Yahweh, I will praise his word. | In God will I give praise to his word; in the Lord will I give praise to his word. | In God I praise the word, In Jehovah I praise the word. | In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. |

| Psalms 56:13 | For you have delivered my soul from death, And prevented my feet from falling, That I may walk before God in the light of the living. Psalm 57 For the Chief Musician. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." A poem by David, when he fled from Saul, in the cave. | Because you have taken my soul from the power of death; and kept my feet from falling, so that I may be walking before God in the light of life. | For Thou hast delivered my soul from death, Dost Thou not my feet from falling? To walk habitually before God in the light of the living! | For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt thou not deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living? |
