| Job 16:1 | Then Job answered, | And Job answered and said, | Then Job answered, and said: | And Job made answer and said, |
| Job 16:2 | "I have heard many such things. Miserable comforters are you all! | I have heard many such things: grievous comforters are ye all. | I have often heard such things as these: you are all troublesome comforters. | Such things have frequently come to my ears: you are comforters who only give trouble. |
| Job 16:3 | Shall vain words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer? | Shall words of wind have an end? or what provoketh thee that thou answerest? | Shall windy words have no end? or is it any trouble to thee to speak? | May words which are like the wind be stopped? or what is troubling you to make answer to them? |
| Job 16:4 | I also could speak as you do. If your soul were in my soul's place, I could join words together against you, And shake my head at you. | I also could speak as ye: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could join together words against you, and shake my head at you; | I also could speak like you: and would God your soul were for my soul. | It would not be hard for me to say such things if your souls were in my soul's place; joining words together against you, and shaking my head at you: |
| Job 16:5 | But I would strengthen you with my mouth. The solace of my lips would relieve you. | [But] I would encourage you with my mouth, and the solace of my lips should assuage [your pain]. | I would comfort you also with words, and would wag my head over you. | I might give you strength with my mouth, and not keep back the comfort of my lips. |
| Job 16:6 | "Though I speak, my grief is not subsided. Though I forbear, what am I eased? | If I speak, my pain is not assuaged; and if I forbear, what am I eased? | I would strengthen you with my mouth, and would move my lips, as sparing you. | If I say what is in my mind, my pain becomes no less: and if I keep quiet, how much of it goes from me? |
| Job 16:7 | But now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made desolate all my company. | But now he hath made me weary; ... thou hast made desolate all my family; | But what shall I do? If I speak, my pain will not rest: and if I hold my peace, it will not depart from me. | But now he has overcome me with weariness and fear, and I am in the grip of all my trouble. |
| Job 16:8 | You have shriveled me up. This is a witness against me. My leanness rises up against me, It testifies to my face. | Thou hast shrivelled me up! it is become a witness; and my leanness riseth up against me, it beareth witness to my face. | But now my sorrow hath oppressed me, and all my limbs are brought to nothing. | It has come up as a witness against me, and the wasting of my flesh makes answer to my face. |
| Job 16:9 | He has torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me; He has gnashed on me with his teeth: My adversary sharpens his eyes on me. | His anger teareth and pursueth me; he gnasheth with his teeth against me; [as] mine adversary he sharpeneth his eyes at me. | My wrinkles bear witness against me, and a false speaker riseth up against my face, contradicting me. | I am broken by his wrath, and his hate has gone after me; he has made his teeth sharp against me: my haters are looking on me with cruel eyes; |
| Job 16:10 | They have gaped on me with their mouth; They have struck me on the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me. | They gape upon me with their mouth; they smite my cheeks reproachfully; they range themselves together against me. | He hath gathered together his fury against me, and threatening me he hath gnashed with his teeth upon me: my enemy hath beheld me with terrible eyes. | Their mouths are open wide against me; the blows of his bitter words are falling on my face; all of them come together in a mass against me. |
| Job 16:11 | God delivers me to the ungodly, And casts me into the hands of the wicked. | ùGod hath delivered me over to the iniquitous man, and hurled me into the hands of the wicked. | They have opened their mouths upon me, and reproaching me they have struck me on the cheek, they are filled with my pains. | God gives me over to the power of sinners, sending me violently into the hands of evil-doers. |
| Job 16:12 | I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target. | I was at rest, but he hath shattered me; he hath taken me by the neck and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. | God hath shut me up with the unjust man, and hath delivered me into the hands of the wicked. | I was in comfort, but I have been broken up by his hands; he has taken me by the neck, shaking me to bits; he has put me up as a mark for his arrows. |
| Job 16:13 | His archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my gall on the ground. | His arrows encompass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground. | I that was formerly so wealthy, am all on a sudden broken to pieces: he hath taken me by my neck, he hath broken me, and hath set me up to be his mark. | His bowmen come round about me; their arrows go through my body without mercy; my life is drained out on the earth. |
| Job 16:14 | He breaks me with breach on breach. He runs on me like a giant. | He breaketh me with breach upon breach; he runneth upon me like a mighty man. | He hath compassed me round about with his lances, he hath wounded my loins, he hath not spared, and hath poured out my bowels on the earth. | I am broken with wound after wound; he comes rushing on me like a man of war. |
| Job 16:15 | I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, And have thrust my horn in the dust. | I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and rolled my horn in the dust. | He hath torn me with wound upon wound, he hath rushed in upon me like a giant. | I have made haircloth the clothing of my skin, and my horn is rolled in the dust. |
| Job 16:16 | My face is red with weeping. Deep darkness is on my eyelids. | My face is red with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; | I have sowed sackcloth upon my skin, and have covered my flesh with ashes. | My face is red with weeping, and my eyes are becoming dark; |
| Job 16:17 | Although there is no violence in my hands, And my prayer is pure. | Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure. | My face is swollen with weeping, and my eyelids are dim. | Though my hands have done no violent acts, and my prayer is clean. |
| Job 16:18 | "Earth, don't cover my blood, Let my cry have no place to rest. | O earth, cover not my blood, and let there be no place for my cry! | These things have I suffered without the iniquity of my hand, when I offered pure prayers to God. | O earth, let not my blood be covered, and let my cry have no resting-place! |
| Job 16:19 | Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven. He who vouches for me is on high. | Even now, behold, my Witness is in the heavens, and he that voucheth for me is in the heights. | O earth, cover not thou my blood, neither let my cry find a hiding place in thee. | Even now my witness is in heaven, and the supporter of my cause is on high. |
| Job 16:20 | My friends scoff at me. My eyes pour out tears to God, | My friends are my mockers; mine eye poureth out tears unto +God. | For behold my witness is in heaven, and he that knoweth my conscience is on high. | My friends make sport of me; to God my eyes are weeping, |
| Job 16:21 | That he would maintain the right of a man with God, Of a son of man with his neighbor! | Oh that there were arbitration for a man with +God, as a son of man for his friend! | My friends are full of words: my eye poureth out tears to God. | So that he may give decision for a man in his cause with God, and between a son of man and his neighbour. |
| Job 16:22 | For when a few years are come, I shall go the way from whence I shall not return. | For years [few] in number shall pass, and I shall go the way [whence] I shall not return. | And O that a man might so be judged with God, as the son of man is judged with his companion! | For in a short time I will take the journey from which I will not come back. |
