Job 1:1A man there hath been in the land of Uz Job his name and that man hath been perfect and upright both fearing God, and turning aside from evil. There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. He was without sin and upright, fearing God and keeping himself far from evil. There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil. There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, and that man was simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil.
Job 1:2And there are borne to him seven sons and three daughters,And he had seven sons and three daughters. There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
Job 1:3and his substance is seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a service very abundant; and that man is greater than any of the sons of the east. And of cattle he had seven thousand sheep and goats, and three thousand camels, and a thousand oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great number of servants. And the man was greater than any of the sons of the east. His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east. And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a family exceeding great: and this man was great among all the people of the east.
Job 1:4And his sons have gone and made a banquet the house of each [in] his day and have sent and called to their three sisters to eat and to drink with them; His sons regularly went to one another's houses, and every one on his day gave a feast: and at these times they sent for their three sisters to take part in their feasts with them. His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. And his sons went, and made a feast by houses every one in his day. And sending they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
Job 1:5and it cometh to pass, when they have gone round the days of the banquet, that Job doth send and sanctify them, and hath risen early in the morning, and caused to ascend burnt-offerings the number of them all for Job said, `Perhaps my sons have sinned, yet blessed God in their heart.` Thus doth Job all the days. And at the end of their days of feasting, Job sent and made them clean, getting up early in the morning and offering burned offerings for them all. For, Job said, It may be that my sons have done wrong and said evil of God in their hearts. And Job did this whenever the feasts came round. It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts." Thus did Job continually. And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So did Job all days.
Job 1:6And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst. And there was a day when the sons of the gods came together before the Lord, and the Satan came with them. Now it happened on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh, that Satan also came among them. Now on a certain day when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them.
Job 1:7And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Whence comest thou?` And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down on it.`And the Lord said to the Satan, Where do you come from? And the Satan said in answer, From wandering this way and that on the earth, and walking about on it.Yahweh said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou ? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
Job 1:8And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?`And the Lord said to the Satan, Have you taken note of my servant Job, for there is no one like him on the earth, a man without sin and upright, fearing God and keeping himself far from evil?Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil."And the Lord said to him: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a simple and upright man, and fearing God, and avoiding evil?
Job 1:9And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `For nought is Job fearing God?And the Satan said in answer to the Lord, Is it for nothing that Job is a god-fearing man? Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? And Satan answering, said: Doth Job fear God in vain ?
Job 1:10Hast not Thou made a hedge for him, and for his house, and for all that he hath round about?Have you yourself not put a wall round him and his house and all he has on every side, blessing the work of his hands, and increasing his cattle in the land?Haven't you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.Hast not thou made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession hath increased on the earth ?
Job 1:11The work of his hands Thou hast blessed, and his substance hath spread in the land, and yet, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike against anything that he hath if not: to Thy face he doth bless Thee!`But now, put out your hand against all he has, and he will be cursing you to your face. But put forth your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face."But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he blesseth thee not to thy face.
Job 1:12And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Lo, all that he hath [is] in thy hand, only unto him put not forth thy hand.` And the Adversary goeth out from the presence of Jehovah. And the Lord said to the Satan, See, I give all he has into your hands, only do not put a finger on the man himself. And the Satan went out from before the Lord.Yahweh said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don't put forth your hand." So Satan went forth from the presence of Yahweh. Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person. And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
Job 1:13And the day is, that his sons and his daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.And there was a day when his sons and daughters were feasting in the house of their oldest brother,It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,Now upon a certain day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,
Job 1:14And a messenger hath come in unto Job and saith, `The oxen have been plowing, and the she-asses feeding by their sides,And a man came to Job, and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the asses were taking their food by their side:that there came a messenger to Job, and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,There came a messenger to Job, and said: The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them,
Job 1:15and Sheba doth fall, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped only I alone to declare [it] to thee.`And the men of Sheba came against them and took them away, putting the young men to the sword, and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news.and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
Job 1:16While this [one] is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Fire of God hath fallen from the heavens, and burneth among the flock, and among the young men, and consumeth them, and I am escaped only I alone to declare [it] to thee.`And this one was still talking when another came, and said, The fire of God came down from heaven, burning up the sheep and the goats and the young men completely, and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news. While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, "The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you."And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said: The fire of God fell from heaven, and striking the sheep and the servants, hath consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
Job 1:17While this [one] is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Chaldeans made three heads, and rush on the camels, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped only I alone to declare [it] to thee.`And this one was still talking when another came, and said, The Chaldaeans made themselves into three bands, and came down on the camels and took them away, putting the young men to the sword, and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news. While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."And while he also was yet speaking, there came another, and said: The Chaldeans made three troops, and have fallen upon the camels, and taken them, moreover they have slain the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
Job 1:18While this [one] is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Thy sons and thy daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.And this one was still talking when another came, and said, Your sons and your daughters were feasting together in their oldest brother's house,While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,He was yet speaking, and behold another came in, and said: Thy sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their elder brother:
Job 1:19And lo, a great wind hath come from over the wilderness, and striketh against the four corners of the house, and it falleth on the young men, and they are dead, and I am escaped only I alone to declare [it] to thee.`When a great wind came rushing from the waste land against the four sides of the house, and it came down on the young men, and they are dead; and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news.and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you."A violent wind came on a sudden from the side of the desert, and shook the four corners of the house, and it fell upon thy children and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to fell thee.
Job 1:20And Job riseth, and rendeth his robe, and shaveth his head, and falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance,Then Job got up, and after parting his clothing and cutting off his hair, he went down on his face to the earth, and gave worship, and said,Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshipped. Then Job rose up, and rent his garments, and having shaven his head fell down upon the ground and worshipped,
Job 1:21and he saith, `Naked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked I turn back thither: Jehovah hath given and Jehovah hath taken: let the name of Jehovah be blessed.`With nothing I came out of my mother's body, and with nothing I will go back there; the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; let the Lord's name be praised. He said, "Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be the name of Yahweh."And said: Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: as it hath pleased the Lord so is it done: blessed be the name of the Lord.
Job 1:22In all this Job hath not sinned, nor given folly to God.In all this Job did no sin, and did not say that God's acts were foolish. In all this, Job did not sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing. In all these things Job sinned not by his lips, nor spoke he any foolish thing against God.
