John 16:1These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble. I have said these things to you so that you may not be in doubt."These things I have spoken to you in order to clear stumbling-blocks out of your path.
John 16:2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. They will put you out of the Synagogues: yes, the time is coming when whoever puts you to death will have the belief that he is doing God's pleasure.You will be excluded from the synagogues; nay more, the time is coming when any one who has murdered one of you will suppose he is offering service to God.
John 16:3And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me. They will do these things to you because they have not had knowledge of the Father or of me.And they will do these things because they have failed to recognize the Father and to discover who I am.
John 16:4But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you. I have said these things to you so that when the time comes, what I have said may come to your mind. I did not say them to you at the first, because then I was still with you.But I have spoken these things to you in order that when the time for their accomplishment comes you may remember them, and may recollect that I told you. I did not, however, tell you all this at first, because I was still with you.
John 16:5But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But now I am going to him who sent me; and not one of you says to me, Where are you going?But now I an returning to Him who sent me; and not one of you asks me where I am going.
John 16:6But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things.But grief has filled your hearts because I have said all this to you.
John 16:7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you."Yet it is the truth that I am telling you it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
John 16:8And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged:And He, when He comes, will convict the world in respect of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement;
John 16:9of sin, because they believe not on me; Of sin, because they have not faith in me;of sin, because they do not believe in me;
John 16:10of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more;of righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me;
John 16:11of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged. Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged.of judgement, because the Prince of this world is under sentence.
John 16:12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now."I have much more to say to you, but you are unable at present to bear the burden of it.
John 16:13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, [these] shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come.But when He has come the Spirit of Truth He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak as Himself originating what He says, but all that He hears He will speak, and He will make known the future to you.
John 16:14He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare [it] unto you. He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you.He will glorify me, because He will take of what is mine and will make it known to you.
John 16:15All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare [it] unto you. Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you.Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit of Truth takes of what is mine and will make it known to you.
John 16:16A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me. After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me."A little while and you see me no more, and again a little while and you shall see me."
John 16:17[Some] of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father?Some of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What does this mean which He is telling us, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me,' and `Because I am going to the Father'?"
John 16:18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith. So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us.So they asked one another repeatedly, "What can that `little while' mean which He speaks of? We do not understand His words."
John 16:19Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me? Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me?Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask Him, and He said, "Is this what you are questioning one another about my saying, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me'?
John 16:20Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.In most solemn truth I tell you that you will weep aloud and lament, but the world will be glad. You will mourn, but your grief will be turned into gladness.
John 16:21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world. When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world.A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the babe, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy at a child being born into the world.
John 16:22And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you. So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy.So you also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and your gladness no one will take away from you.
John 16:23And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name. And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name.You will put no questions to me then. "In most solemn truth I tell you that whatever you ask the Father for in my name He will give you.
John 16:24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full. Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy.As yet you have not asked for anything in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your hearts may be filled with gladness.
John 16:25These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father. All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly."All this I have spoken to you in veiled language. The time is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language, but will tell you about the Father in plain words.
John 16:26In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you; In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you,At that time you will make your requests in my name; and I do not promise to ask the Father on your behalf,
John 16:27for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father. For the Father himself gives his love to you, because you have given your love to me and have had faith that I came from God.for the Father Himself holds you dear, because you have held me dear and have believed that I came from the Father's presence.
John 16:28I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father. I came out from the Father and have come into the world: again, I go away from the world and go to the Father.I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father."
John 16:29His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying. His disciples said, Now you are talking clearly and not in veiled language."Ah, now you are using plain language," said His disciples, "and are uttering no figure of speech!
John 16:30Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. Now we are certain that you have knowledge of all things and have no need for anyone to put questions to you: through this we have faith that you came from God.Now we know that you have all knowledge, and do not need to be pressed with questions. Through this we believe that you came from God."
John 16:31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? Jesus made answer, Have you faith now?"Do you at last believe?" replied Jesus.
John 16:32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and [yet] I am not alone, because the Father is with me. See, a time is coming, yes, it is now here, when you will go away in all directions, every man to his house, and I will be by myself: but I am not by myself, because the Father is with me."Remember that the time is coming, nay, has already come, for you all to be dispersed each to his own home and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
John 16:33These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. I have said all these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world."I have spoken all this to you in order that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction. But keep up your courage: *I* have won the victory over the world."
