Mark 5:1 | And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. | And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. | So they arrived at the opposite shore of the Lake, in the country of the Gerasenes. |
Mark 5:2 | And when he was come out of the boat, straightway there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, | And when he had got out of the boat, straight away there came to him from the place of the dead a man with an unclean spirit. | At once, on His landing, there came from the tombs to meet Him a man possessed by a foul spirit. |
Mark 5:3 | who had his dwelling in the tombs: and no man could any more bind him, no, not with a chain; | He was living in the place of the dead: and no man was able to keep him down, no, not with a chain; | This man lived among the tombs, nor could any one now secure him even with a chain; |
Mark 5:4 | because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been rent asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: and no man had strength to tame him. | Because he had frequently been prisoned in chains and iron bands, and the chains had been parted and the bands broken by him: and no man was strong enough to make him quiet. | for many a time he had been left securely bound in fetters and chains, but afterwards the chains lay torn link from link, and the fetters in fragments, and there was no one strong enough to master him. |
Mark 5:5 | And always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones. | And all the time, by day and by night, in the place of the dead, and in the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. | And constantly, day and night, he remained among the tombs or on the hills, shrieking, and mangling himself with sharp stones. |
Mark 5:6 | And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshipped him; | And when he saw Jesus from far off, he went quickly to him and gave him worship; | And when he saw Jesus in the distance, he ran and threw himself at His feet, |
Mark 5:7 | and crying out with a loud voice, he saith, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God? I adjure thee by God, torment me not. | And crying out with a loud voice he said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name, do not be cruel to me. | crying out in a loud voice, "What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? In God's name I implore Thee not to torment me." |
Mark 5:8 | For he said unto him, Come forth, thou unclean spirit, out of the man. | For Jesus had said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit. | For He had said to him, "Foul spirit, come out of the man." |
Mark 5:9 | And he asked him, What is thy name? And he saith unto him, My name is Legion; for we are many. | And Jesus said, What is your name? And he made answer, My name is Legion, because there are a great number of us. | Jesus also questioned him. "What is your name?" He said. "Legion," he replied, "for there are a host of us." |
Mark 5:10 | And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. | And he made strong prayers to him not to send them away out of the country. | And he earnestly entreated Him not to send them away out of the country. |
Mark 5:11 | Now there was there on the mountain side a great herd of swine feeding. | Now on the mountain side there was a great herd of pigs getting their food. | Feeding there, on the mountain slope, was a great herd of swine. |
Mark 5:12 | And they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. | And they said to him, Send us into the pigs, so that we may go into them. | So they besought Jesus. "Send us to the swine," they said, "so that we may enter into them." |
Mark 5:13 | And he gave them leave. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the sea, [in number] about two thousand; and they were drowned in the sea. | And he let them do it. And the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs; and the herd went rushing down a sharp slope into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they came to their death in the sea. | He gave them leave; and the foul spirits came out and entered into the swine, and the herd about 2,000 in number rushed headlong down the cliff into the Lake and were drowned in the Lake. |
Mark 5:14 | And they that fed them fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they came to see what it was that had come to pass. | And their keepers went running and gave an account of it in the town and in the country. And people came to see what had taken place. | The swineherds fled, and spread the news in town and country. So the people came to see what it was that had happened; |
Mark 5:15 | And they come to Jesus, and behold him that was possessed with demons sitting, clothed and in his right mind, [even] him that had the legion: and they were afraid. | And they came to Jesus, and saw the man in whom had been the evil spirits seated, clothed and with full use of his senses, and they were full of fear. | and when they came to Jesus, they beheld the demoniac quietly seated, clothed and of sane mind the man who had had the legion; and they were awe-stricken. |
Mark 5:16 | And they that saw it declared unto them how it befell him that was possessed with demons, and concerning the swine. | And those who had seen it gave them an account of what had been done to him who had the evil spirits, and of the fate of the pigs. | And those who had seen it told them the particulars of what had happened to the demoniac, and all about the swine. |
Mark 5:17 | And they began to beseech him to depart from their borders. | And they made a request to him to go out of their country. | Then they began entreating Him to depart from their district. |
Mark 5:18 | And as he was entering into the boat, he that had been possessed with demons besought him that he might be with him. | And when he was getting into the boat, the man in whom had been the evil spirits had a great desire to come with him. | As He was embarking, the man who had been possessed asked permission to accompany Him. |
Mark 5:19 | And he suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go to thy house unto thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and [how] he had mercy on thee. | And he would not let him, but said to him, Go to your house, to your friends, and give them news of the great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy on you. | But He would not allow it. "Go home to your family," He said, "and report to them all that the Lord has done for you, and the mercy He has shown you." |
Mark 5:20 | And he went his way, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men marvelled. | And he went on his way, and made public in the country of Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him: and all men were full of wonder. | So the man departed, and related publicly everywhere in the Ten Towns all that Jesus had done for him; and all were astonished. |
Mark 5:21 | And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat unto the other side, a great multitude was gathered unto him; and he was by the sea. | And when Jesus had gone over again in the boat to the other side, a great number of people came to him: and he was by the sea. | When Jesus had re-crossed in the boat to the other side, a vast multitude came crowding to Him; and He was on the shore of the Lake, |
Mark 5:22 | And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and seeing him, he falleth at his feet, | And one of the rulers of the Synagogue, Jairus by name, came, and seeing him, went down at his feet, | when there came one of the Wardens of the Synagogue he was called Jair who, on beholding Him, threw himself at His feet, |
Mark 5:23 | and beseecheth him much, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death: [I pray thee], that thou come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be made whole, and live. | And made strong prayers to him, saying, My little daughter is near to death: it is my prayer that you will come and put your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and have life. | and besought Him with many entreaties. "My little daughter," he said, "is at the point of death: I pray you come and lay your hands upon her, that she may recover and live." |
Mark 5:24 | And he went with him; and a great multitude followed him, and they thronged him. | And he went with him; and a great number of people went after him, and came round him. | And Jesus went with him. And a dense crowd followed Him, and thronged Him on all sides. |
Mark 5:25 | And a woman, who had an issue of blood twelve years, | And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, | Now a woman who for twelve years had suffered from haemorrhage, |
Mark 5:26 | and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, | And had undergone much at the hands of a number of medical men, and had given all she had, and was no better, but even worse, | and had undergone many different treatments under a number of doctors and had spent all she had without receiving benefit but on the contrary growing worse, |
Mark 5:27 | having heard the things concerning Jesus, came in the crowd behind, and touched his garment. | When she had news of the things which Jesus did, went among the people coming after him, and put her hand on his robe. | heard of Jesus. And she came in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak; |
Mark 5:28 | For she said, If I touch but his garments, I shall be made whole. | For she said, If I may only put my hand on his robe, I will be made well. | for she said, "If I but touch His clothes, I shall be cured." |
Mark 5:29 | And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her plague. | And straight away the fountain of her blood was stopped, and she had a feeling in her body that her disease had gone and she was well. | In a moment the flow of her blood ceased, and she felt in herself that her complaint was cured. |
Mark 5:30 | And straightway Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power [proceeding] from him had gone forth, turned him about in the crowd, and said, Who touched my garments? | And straight away Jesus was conscious that power had gone out of him; and, turning to the people, he said, Who was touching my robe? | Immediately Jesus, well knowing that healing power had gone from within Him, turned round in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" |
Mark 5:31 | And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? | And his disciples said to him, You see the people round you on every side, and you say, Who was touching me? | "You see the multitude pressing you on all sides," His disciples exclaimed, "and yet you ask, `Who touched me?'" |
Mark 5:32 | And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. | And on his looking round to see her who had done this thing, | But He continued looking about to see the person who had done this, |
Mark 5:33 | But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. | The woman, shaking with fear, conscious of what had been done to her, came and, falling on her face before him, gave him a true account of everything. | until the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and threw herself at His feet, and told Him all the truth. |
Mark 5:34 | And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. | And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be free from your disease. | "Daughter," He said, "your faith has cured you: go in peace, and be free from your complaint." |
Mark 5:35 | While he yet spake, they come from the ruler of the synagogue's [house] saying, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Teacher any further? | And while he was still talking, they came from the ruler of the Synagogue's house, saying, Your daughter is dead: why are you still troubling the Master? | While He is yet speaking, men come from the house to the Warden, and say, "Your daughter is dead: why trouble the Rabbi further?" |
Mark 5:36 | But Jesus, not heeding the word spoken, saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe. | But Jesus, giving no attention to their words, said to the ruler of the Synagogue, Have no fear, only have faith. | But Jesus, overhearing the words, said to the Warden, "Do not be afraid; only have faith." |
Mark 5:37 | And he suffered no man to follow with him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. | And he did not let anyone come with him, but Peter and James and John, the brother of James. | And He allowed no one to accompany Him except Peter and the brothers James and John. |
Mark 5:38 | And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he beholdeth a tumult, and [many] weeping and wailing greatly. | And they came to the house of the ruler of the Synagogue; and he saw people running this way and that, and weeping and crying loudly. | So they come to the Warden's house. Here He gazes on a scene of uproar, with people weeping aloud and wailing. |
Mark 5:39 | And when he was entered in, he saith unto them, Why make ye a tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth. | And when he had gone in, he said to them, Why are you making such a noise and weeping? The child is not dead, but sleeping. | He goes in. "Why all this outcry and loud weeping?" He asks; "the child is asleep, not dead." |
Mark 5:40 | And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was. | And they were laughing at him. But he, having sent them all out, took the father of the child and her mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. | To this their reply is a scornful laugh. He, however, puts them all out, takes the child's father and mother and those He has brought with Him, and enters the room where the child lies. |
Mark 5:41 | And taking the child by the hand, he saith unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, Arise. | And taking her by the hand, he said to her, Talitha cumi, which is, My child, I say to you, Get up. | Then, taking her by the hand, He says to her, "Talitha, koum;" that is to say, "Little girl, I command you to wake!" |
Mark 5:42 | And straightway the damsel rose up, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were amazed straightway with a great amazement. | And the young girl got up straight away, and was walking about; she being twelve years old. And they were overcome with wonder. | Instantly the little girl rises to her feet and begins to walk (for she was twelve years old). They were at once beside themselves with utter astonishment; |
Mark 5:43 | And he charged them much that no man should know this: and he commanded that [something] should be given her to eat. | And he gave them special orders that they were not to say anything of this; and he said that some food was to be given to her. | but He gave strict injunctions that the matter should not be made known, and directed them to give her something to eat. |
