Luke 11:1 | And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, even as John also taught his disciples. | And it came to pass, that as he was in a certain place praying, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. | And it came about that he was in prayer in a certain place, and when he came to an end, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, will you give us teaching about prayer, as John did to his disciples? |
Luke 11:2 | And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Father, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. | And he said to them: When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. | And he said to them, When you say your prayers, say, Father, may your name be kept holy and your kingdom come. |
Luke 11:3 | Give us day by day our daily bread. | Give us this day our daily bread. | Give us every day bread for our needs. |
Luke 11:4 | And forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation. | And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation. | May we have forgiveness for our sins, as we make free all those who are in debt to us. And let us not be put to the test. |
Luke 11:5 | And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves; | And he said to them: Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go to him at midnight, and shall say to him: Friend, lend me three loaves, | And he said to them, Which of you, having a friend, would go to him in the middle of the night and say to him, Friend, let me have three cakes of bread; |
Luke 11:6 | for a friend of mine is come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him; | Because a friend of mine is come off his journey to me, and I have not what to set before him. | Because a friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I have nothing to put before him; |
Luke 11:7 | and he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee? | And he from within should answer, and say: Trouble me not, the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. | And he, from inside the house, would say in answer, Do not be a trouble to me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; it is not possible for me to get up and give to you? |
Luke 11:8 | I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will arise and give him as many as he needeth. | Yet if he shall continue knocking, I say to you, although he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend; yet, because of his importunity, he will rise, and give him as many as he needeth. | I say to you, Though he will not get up and give to him, because he is his friend, still, if he keeps on making his request, he will get up and give him as much as he has need of. |
Luke 11:9 | And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. | And I say to you, Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. | And I say to you, Make requests, and they will be answered; what you are searching for, you will get; when you give the sign, the door will be open to you. |
Luke 11:10 | For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. | For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. | For to everyone who makes a request, it will be given; and he who is searching will get his desire; and to him who gives the sign, the door will be open. |
Luke 11:11 | And of which of you that is a father shall his son ask a loaf, and he give him a stone? or a fish, and he for a fish give him a serpent? | And which of you, if he ask his father bread, will he give him a stone? or a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? | And which of you, being a father, will give a stone to his son, who makes request for bread? or for a fish, will give him a snake? |
Luke 11:12 | Or [if] he shall ask an egg, will he give him a scorpion? | Or if he shall ask an egg, will he reach him a scorpion? | Or for an egg, will give him a scorpion? |
Luke 11:13 | If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? | If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from heaven give the good Spirit to them that ask him? | If, then, you who are evil are able to give good things to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who make request to him? |
Luke 11:14 | And he was casting out a demon [that was] dumb. And it came to pass, when the demon was gone out, the dumb man spake; and the multitudes marvelled. | And he was casting out a devil, and the same was dumb: and when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes were in admiration at it: | And he was sending an evil spirit out of a man who was without the power of talking. And it came about that when the spirit had gone the man had the power of talking; and the people were full of wonder. |
Luke 11:15 | But some of them said, By Beelzebub the prince of the demons casteth he out demons. | But some of them said: He casteth out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils. | But some of them said, He sends out evil spirits by Beelzebul, the ruler of evil spirits. |
Luke 11:16 | And others, trying [him], sought of him a sign from heaven. | And others tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven. | And others, testing him, were looking for a sign from heaven from him. |
Luke 11:17 | But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house [divided] against a house falleth. | But he seeing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself, shall be brought to desolation, and house upon house shall fall. | But he, having knowledge of their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom in which there is division is made waste; and a house in which there is division comes to destruction. |
Luke 11:18 | And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub. | And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because you say, that through Beelzebub I cast out devils. | If, then, Satan is at war with himself, how will he keep his kingdom? because you say that I send evil spirits out of men by the help of Beelzebul. |
Luke 11:19 | And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. | Now if I cast out devils by Beelzebub; by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. | And if I, by Beelzebul, send out evil spirits, by whose help do your sons send them out? so let them be your judges. |
Luke 11:20 | But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you. | But if I by the finger of God cast out devils; doubtless the kingdom of God is come upon you. | But if I, by the finger of God, send out evil spirits, then the kingdom of God has overtaken you. |
Luke 11:21 | When the strong [man] fully armed guardeth his own court, his goods are in peace: | When a strong man armed keepeth his court, those things are in peace which he possesseth. | When the strong man armed keeps watch over his house, then his goods are safe: |
Luke 11:22 | but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him his whole armor wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. | But if a stronger than he come upon him, and overcome him; he will take away all his armour wherein he trusted, and will distribute his spoils. | But when one who is stronger makes an attack on him and overcomes him, he takes away his instruments of war, in which he had put his faith, and makes division of his goods. |
Luke 11:23 | He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. | He that is not with me, is against me; and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth. | He who is not with me is against me, and he who will not give me help in getting people together is driving them away. |
Luke 11:24 | The unclean spirit when he is gone out of the man, passeth through waterless places, seeking rest, and finding none, he saith, I will turn back unto my house whence I came out. | When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water, seeking rest; and not finding, he saith: I will return into my house whence I came out. | The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of a man, goes through dry places, looking for rest; and when he does not get it, he says, I will go back to my house from which I came. |
Luke 11:25 | And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished. | And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished. | And when he comes, he sees that it has been made fair and clean. |
Luke 11:26 | Then goeth he, and taketh [to him] seven other spirits more evil than himself; and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first. | Then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. | Then he goes and gets seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they go in, and take their places there: and the last condition of that man is worse than the first. |
Luke 11:27 | And it came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck. | And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck. | And it came about that when he said these things, a certain woman among the people said in a loud voice, Happy is the body which gave you birth, and the breasts from which you took milk. |
Luke 11:28 | But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. | But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it. | But he said, More happy are they who give hearing to the word of God and keep it. |
Luke 11:29 | And when the multitudes were gathering together unto him, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation: it seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of Jonah. | And the multitudes running together, he began to say: This generation is a wicked generation: it asketh a sign, and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. | And when a great number of people came together to him, he said, This generation is an evil generation: it is looking for a sign and no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. |
Luke 11:30 | For even as Jonah became a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. | For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninivites; so shall the Son of man also be to this generation. | For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of man be to this generation. |
Luke 11:31 | The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here. | The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold more than Solomon here. | The queen of the South will come up on the day of judging and give her decision against the men of this generation: for she came from the ends of the earth to give ear to the wisdom of Solomon; and now something greater than Solomon is here. |
Luke 11:32 | The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, a greater than Jonah is here. | The men of Ninive shall rise in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas; and behold more than Jonas here. | The men of Nineveh will come up in the day of judging and give their decision against this generation: for they were turned away from their sins at the preaching of Jonah; but now something greater than Jonah is here. |
Luke 11:33 | No man, when he hath lighted a lamp, putteth it in a cellar, neither under the bushel, but on the stand, that they which enter in may see the light. | No man lighteth a candle, and putteth it in a hidden place, nore under a bushel; but upon a candlestick, that they that come in, may see the light. | No man, when the light has been lighted, puts it in a secret place, or under a vessel, but on its table, so that those who come in may see the light. |
Luke 11:34 | The lamp of thy body is thine eye: when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when it is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. | The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be lightsome: but if it be evil, thy body also will be darksome. | The light of the body is the eye: when your eye is true, all your body is full of light; but when it is evil, your body is dark. |
Luke 11:35 | Look therefore whether the light that is in thee be not darkness. | Take heed therefore, that the light which is in thee, be not darkness. | So take care that the light which is in you is not dark. |
Luke 11:36 | If therefore thy whole body be full of light, having no part dark, it shall be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining doth give thee light. | If then thy whole body be lightsome, having no part of darkness; the whole shall be lightsome; and as a bright lamp, shall enlighten thee. | If, then, all your body is light, with no part of it dark, it will be completely full of light, as when a flame with its bright shining gives you light. |
Luke 11:37 | Now as he spake, a Pharisee asketh him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. | And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him, that he would dine with him. And he going in, sat down to eat. | Now, while he was talking, a Pharisee made a request that he would come to a meal with him; and he went in and took his seat at the meal. |
Luke 11:38 | And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first bathed himself before dinner. | And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner. | And when the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised because he came to the meal without first washing himself. |
Luke 11:39 | And the Lord said unto him, Now ye the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. | And the Lord said to him: Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity. | And the Lord said to him, You Pharisees make the outside of the cup and the plate clean; but inside you are thieves and full of evil. |
Luke 11:40 | Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also? | Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without, make also that which is within? | O you foolish ones! did not he who made the outside in the same way make the inside? |
Luke 11:41 | But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, all things are clean unto you. | But yet that which remaineth, give alms; and behold, all things are clean unto you. | But if you give to the poor such things as you are able, then all things are clean to you. |
Luke 11:42 | But woe unto you Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over justice and the love of God: but these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. | But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb; and pass over judgment, and the charity of God. Now these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone. | But a curse is on you, Pharisees! for you make men give a tenth of every sort of plant, and give no thought to right and the love of God; but it is right for you to do these things, and not let the others be undone. |
Luke 11:43 | Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces. | Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the marketplace. | A curse is on you, Pharisees! for your desires are for the most important seats in the Synagogues and for words of respect said to you in the market-place. |
Luke 11:44 | Woe unto you! for ye are as the tombs which appear not, and the men that walk over [them] know it not. | Woe to you, because you are as sepulchres that appear not, and men that walk over are not aware. | A curse is on you! for you are like the resting-places of dead men, which are not seen, and men go walking over them without knowledge of it. |
Luke 11:45 | And one of the lawyers answering saith unto him, Teacher, in saying this thou reproachest us also. | And one of the lawyers answering, saith to him: Master, in saying these things, thou reproachest us also. | And one of the teachers of the law, answering, said to him, Master, in saying this, you give a bad name to us as to them. |
Luke 11:46 | And he said, Woe unto you lawyers also! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. | But he said: Woe to you lawyers also, because you load men with burdens which they cannot bear, and you yourselves touch not the packs with one of your fingers. | And he said, A curse is on you, teachers of the law! for while other men are crushed under the weight of the rules you make for them, you yourselves do not put so much as one finger to them. |
Luke 11:47 | Woe unto you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. | Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them. | A curse is on you! for you make resting-places for the bodies of the prophets, but your fathers put them to death. |
Luke 11:48 | So ye are witnesses and consent unto the works of your fathers: for they killed them, and ye build [their tombs]. | Truly you bear witness that you consent to the doings of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchres. | So you are witnesses and give approval to the work of your fathers; for they put them to death and you make their last resting-places. |
Luke 11:49 | Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles; and [some] of them they shall kill and persecute; | For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute. | For this reason the wisdom of God has said, I will send them prophets and teachers, and to some of them they will give death and cruel pains; |
Luke 11:50 | that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; | That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, | So that punishment may come on this generation for the blood of all the prophets which was given from the earliest days; |
Luke 11:51 | from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary: yea, I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation. | From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who was slain between the alter and the temple: Yea I say to you, It shall be required of this generation. | From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who was put to death between the altar and the Temple. Yes, I say to you, It will come on this generation. |
Luke 11:52 | Woe unto you lawyers! for ye took away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. | Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you yourselves have not entered in, and those that were entering in, you have hindered. | A curse is on you, teachers of the law! for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you did not go in yourselves, and you got in the way of those who were going in. |
Luke 11:53 | And when he was come out from thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon [him] vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things; | And as he was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the lawyers began violently to urge him, and to oppress his mouth about many things, | And when he had come out of that place, the scribes and the Pharisees came round him angrily, questioning him about more things; |
Luke 11:54 | laying wait for him, to catch something out of his mouth. | Lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him. | And watching him, for a chance to get something from his words which might be used against him. |
