Genesis 37:1And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan. And Jacob dwelt in the land of Chanaan wherein his father sojourned.Jacob lived in the land of his father's travels, in the land of Canaan.
Genesis 37:2These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and he was a lad with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought the evil report of them unto their father. And these are his generations: Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was feeding the dock with his brethren, being but a boy: and he was with the sons of and of Zelpha his father's wives : and he accused his brethren to his father of a most wicked crime.This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.
Genesis 37:3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors. Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had him in his old age: and he made him a coat of divers colours.Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors.
Genesis 37:4And his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren; and they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And his brethren seeing that he was loved by his father, more than all his sons, hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn't speak peaceably to him.
Genesis 37:5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. Now it fell out also that he told his brethren a dream, that he had dreamed: which occasioned them to hate him the more.Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.
Genesis 37:6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: And he said to them: Hear my dream which I dreamed.He said to them, "Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:
Genesis 37:7for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves came round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. I thought we were binding sheaves in the field: and my sheaf arose as it were, end stood, and your sheaves standing about, bowed down before my sheaf.for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf."
Genesis 37:8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? Or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. His brethren answered : Shalt thou be our king? or shall we be subject to thy dominion? Therefore this matter of his dreams and words ministered nourishment to their envy and hatred.His brothers said to him, "Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you indeed have dominion over us?" They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.
Genesis 37:9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed yet a dream: and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars made obeisance to me. He dreamed also another dream, which he told his brethren, saying: I saw in a dream, as it were the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars worshipping me.He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, "Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me."
Genesis 37:10And he told it to his father, and to his brethren; and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? And when he had told this to his father and brethren, his father rebuked him, and said: What meaneth this dream that thou hast dreamed? shall I and thy mother, and thy brethren worship thee upon the earth?He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to you to the earth?"
Genesis 37:11And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind. His brethren therefore envied him: but his father considered the thing with himself.His brothers envied him; but his father kept this saying in mind.
Genesis 37:12And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem. And when his brethren abode in Sichem feeding their father's docks,His brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
Genesis 37:13And Israel said unto Joseph, Are not thy brethren feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I. Israel said to him : Thy brethren feed the sheep in Sichem: come, I will send thee to them. And when he answered:Israel said to Joseph, "Aren't your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them." He said to him, "Here I am."
Genesis 37:14And he said to him, Go now, see whether it is well with thy brethren, and well with the flock; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. I am ready: he said to him: Go, and see if all things be well with thy brethren, and the cattle: and bring me word again what is doing. So being sent from the vale of Hebron, he came to Sichem:He said to him, "Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again." So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
Genesis 37:15And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? And a man found him there wandering in the field, and asked what he sought.A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, "What are you looking for?"
Genesis 37:16And he said, I am seeking my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they are feeding [the flock]. But he answered: I seek my brethren; tell me where they feed the docks.He said, "I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock."
Genesis 37:17And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. And the man said to him: They are departed from this place: for I heard them say: Let us go to Dothain. And Joseph went forward after his brethren, and found them in Dothain.The man said, "They have left here, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.
Genesis 37:18And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. And when they saw him afar off, be- fore he came nigh them, they thought to kill him.They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
Genesis 37:19And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. And said one to another: Behold the dreamer cometh.They said one to another, "Behold, this dreamer comes.
Genesis 37:20Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, And evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. Come, let us kill him, and cast him into some old pit : and we will say : Some evil beast hath devoured him: and then it shall appear what his dreams avail him :Come now therefore, and let's kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, 'An evil animal has devoured him.' We will see what will become of his dreams."
Genesis 37:21And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, Let us not take his life. And Ruben hearing this, endeavoured to deliver him out of their hands, end said:Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, "Let's not take his life."
Genesis 37:22And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him: that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father. Do not take away his life, nor shed his blood: but cast him into this pit, that is in the wilderness, and keep your hands harmless: now he said this, being desirous to deliver him out of their hands and to restore him to his father.Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him" - that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.
Genesis 37:23And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him; And as soon as he came to his brethren, they forthwith stript him of his outside coat, that was of divers colours:It happened, when Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him;
Genesis 37:24and they took him, and cast him into the pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. And cast him into an old pit, where there was no water.and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.
Genesis 37:25And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ismaelites on their way coming from Calaad, with their camels, carrying spices, and balm, and myrrh to Egypt.They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
Genesis 37:26And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? And Juda said to his brethren: What will it profit us to kill our brother, and conceal his blood?Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
Genesis 37:27Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brethren hearkened unto him. It is better that he be sold to the Ismaelites, and that our hands be not defiled: for he is our brother and our flesh. His brethren agreed to his words.Come, and let's sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh." His brothers listened to him.
Genesis 37:28And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt. And when the Madianite merchants passed by, they drew him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ismaelites, for twenty pieces of silver: and they led him into Egypt.Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph into Egypt.
Genesis 37:29And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes. And Ruben, returning to the pit, found not the boy:Reuben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn't in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
Genesis 37:30And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go? And rending his garments he went to his brethren, and said: The boy doth not appear and whither shall I go?He returned to his brothers, and said, "The child is no more; and I, where will I go?"
Genesis 37:31And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a he-goat, and dipped the coat in the blood; And they took his coat, and dipped it in the blood of a kid, which they had killed :They took Joseph's coat, and killed a male goat, and dipped the coat in the blood.
Genesis 37:32and they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, This have we found: know now whether it is thy son's coat or not. Sending some to carry it to their father, and to say: This we have found: see whether it be thy son's coat, or not.They took the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, "We have found this. Examine it, now, whether it is your son's coat or not."
Genesis 37:33And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat: an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces. And the father acknowledging it, said: It is my son's coat, an evil wild beast hath eaten him, a beast hath devoured Joseph.He recognized it, and said, "It is my son's coat. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces."
Genesis 37:34And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. And tearing his garments, he put an sackcloth, mourning for his son a long time.Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
Genesis 37:35And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down to Sheol to my son mourning. And his father wept for him. And alibis children being gathered together to comfort their father in his sorrow, he would not receive comfort, but said: I will go down to my son into hell, mourning. And whilst he continued weeping,All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted. He said, "For I will go down to Sheol to my son mourning." His father wept for him.
Genesis 37:36And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard. The Madianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Putiphar, an eunuch of Pharao, captain of the soldiers.The Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard.
