Matthew 19:1 | And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the borders of Judaea beyond the Jordan; | When Jesus had finished these discourses, He removed from Galilee and came into that part of Judaea which lay beyond the Jordan. | And it came about that after saying these words, Jesus went away from Galilee, and came into the parts of Judaea on the other side of Jordan. |
Matthew 19:2 | and great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there. | And a vast multitude followed him, and He cured them there. | And a great number went after him; and he made them well there. |
Matthew 19:3 | And there came unto him Pharisees, trying him, and saying, Is it lawful [for a man] to put away his wife for every cause? | Then came some of the Pharisees to Him to put Him to the proof by the question, "Has a man a right to divorce his wife whenever he chooses?" | And certain Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, Is it right for a man to put away his wife for every cause? |
Matthew 19:4 | And he answered and said, Have ye not read, that he who made [them] from the beginning made them male and female, | "Have you not read," He replied, "that He who made them `made them' from the beginning `male and female, | And he said in answer, Have you not seen in the Writings, that he who made them at the first made them male and female, and said, |
Matthew 19:5 | and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh? | and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall be one'? | For this cause will a man go away from his father and mother, and be joined to his wife; and the two will become one flesh? |
Matthew 19:6 | So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. | Thus they are no longer two, but `one'! What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." | So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Then let not that which has been joined by God be parted by man. |
Matthew 19:7 | They say unto him, Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorcement, and to put [her] away? | "Why then," said they, "did Moses command the husband to give her `a written notice of divorce,' and so put her away?" | They say to him, Why then did Moses give orders that a husband might give her a statement in writing and be free from her? |
Matthew 19:8 | He saith unto them, Moses for your hardness of heart suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it hath not been so. | "Moses," He replied, "in consideration of the hardness of your nature permitted you to put away your wives, but it has not been so from the beginning. | He says to them, Moses, because of your hard hearts, let you put away your wives: but it has not been so from the first. |
Matthew 19:9 | And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth adultery. | And I tell you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except her unfaithfulness, and marries another woman, commits adultery." | And I say to you, Whoever puts away his wife for any other cause than the loss of her virtue, and takes another, is a false husband: and he who takes her as his wife when she is put away, is no true husband to her. |
Matthew 19:10 | The disciples say unto him, If the case of the man is so with his wife, it is not expedient to marry. | "If this is the case with a man in relation to his wife," said the disciples to Him, "it is better not to marry." | The disciples say to him, If this is the position of a man in relation to his wife, it is better not to be married. |
Matthew 19:11 | But he said unto them, Not all men can receive this saying, but they to whom it is given. | "It is not every man," He replied, "who can receive this teaching, but only those on whom the grace has been bestowed. | But he said to them, Not all men are able to take in this saying, but only those to whom it is given. |
Matthew 19:12 | For there are eunuchs, that were so born from their mother's womb: and there are eunuchs, that were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, that made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. | There are men who from their birth have been disabled from marriage, others who have been so disabled by men, and others who have disabled themselves for the sake of the Kingdom of the Heavens. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it." | For there are men who, from birth, were without sex: and there are some who were made so by men: and there are others who have made themselves so for the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to take it, let him take it. |
Matthew 19:13 | Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should lay his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. | Then young children were brought to Him for Him to put His hands on them and pray; but the disciples interfered. | Then some people took little children to him, so that he might put his hands on them in blessing: and the disciples said sharp words to them. |
Matthew 19:14 | But Jesus said, Suffer the little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for to such belongeth the kingdom of heaven. | Jesus however said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them; for it is to those who are childlike that the Kingdom of the Heavens belongs." | But Jesus said, Let the little ones come to me, and do not keep them away: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 19:15 | And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence. | So He laid His hands upon them and went away. | And he put his hands on them, and went away. |
Matthew 19:16 | And behold, one came to him and said, Teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? | "Teacher," said one man, coming up to Him, "what that is good shall I do in order to win the Life of the Ages?" | And one came to him and said, Master, what good thing have I to do, so that I may have eternal life? |
Matthew 19:17 | And he said unto him, Why askest thou me concerning that which is good? One there is who is good: but if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments. | "Why do you ask me," He replied, "about what is good? There is only One who is truly good. But if you desire to enter into Life, keep the Commandments." | And he said to him, Why are you questioning me about what is good? One there is who is good: but if you have a desire to go into life, keep the rules of the law. |
Matthew 19:18 | He saith unto him, Which? And Jesus said, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, | "Which Commandments?" he asked. Jesus answered, "`Thou shalt not kill;' `Thou shalt not commit adultery;' `Thou shalt not steal;' `Thou shalt not lie in giving evidence;' | He says to him, Which? And Jesus said, Do not put anyone to death, Do not be untrue in married life, Do not take what is not yours, Do not give false witness, |
Matthew 19:19 | Honor thy father and mother; and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. | `Honour thy father and thy mother'; and `Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thyself.'" | Give honour to your father and your mother: and, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. |
Matthew 19:20 | The young man saith unto him, All these things have I observed: what lack I yet? | "All of these," said the young man, "I have carefully kept. What do I still lack?" | The young man says to him, All these things have I done: what more is there? |
Matthew 19:21 | Jesus said unto him, If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that which thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. | "If you desire to be perfect," replied Jesus, "go and sell all that you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have wealth in Heaven; and come, follow me." | Jesus said to him, If you have a desire to be complete, go, get money for your property, and give it to the poor, and you will have wealth in heaven: and come after me. |
Matthew 19:22 | But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sorrowful; for he was one that had great possessions. | On hearing those words the young man went away much cast down; for he had much property. | But hearing these words the young man went away sorrowing: for he had much property. |
Matthew 19:23 | And Jesus said unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, It is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. | So Jesus said to His disciples, "I solemnly tell you that it is with difficulty that a rich man will enter the Kingdom of the Heavens. | And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly I say to you, It is hard for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 19:24 | And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. | Yes, I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God." | And again I say to you, It is simpler for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of God. |
Matthew 19:25 | And when the disciples heard it, they were astonished exceedingly, saying, Who then can be saved? | These words utterly amazed the disciples, and they asked, "Who then can be saved?" | And the disciples, hearing this, were greatly surprised, saying, Who then may have salvation? |
Matthew 19:26 | And Jesus looking upon [them] said to them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. | Jesus looked at them and said, "With men this is impossible, but with God everything is possible." | And Jesus, looking at them, said, With men this is not possible; but with God all things are possible. |
Matthew 19:27 | Then answered Peter and said unto him, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee; what then shall we have? | Then Peter said to Jesus, "See, *we* have forsaken everything and followed you; what then will be *our* reward?" | Then Peter said to him, See, we have given up everything and have come after you; what then will we have? |
Matthew 19:28 | And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that ye who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | "I solemnly tell you," replied Jesus, "that in the New Creation, when the Son of Man has taken His seat on His glorious throne, all of you who have followed me shall also sit on twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel. | And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you that in the time when all things are made new, and the Son of man is seated in his glory, you who have come after me will be seated on twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
Matthew 19:29 | And every one that hath left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit eternal life. | And whoever has forsaken houses, or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children or lands, for my sake, shall receive many times as much and shall have as his inheritance the Life of the Ages. | And everyone who has given up houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or child, or land, for my name, will be given a hundred times as much, and have eternal life. |
Matthew 19:30 | But many shall be last [that are] first; and first [that are] last. | "But many who are now first will be last, and many who are now last will be first. | But a great number who are first will be last, and some who are last will be first. |
