Matthew 9:2 | And behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins are forgiven. | Here they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith Jesus said to the paralytic, "Take courage, my child; your sins are pardoned." | And they took to him a man stretched on a bed who had no power of moving; and Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the man who was ill, Son, take heart; you have forgiveness for your sins. |
Matthew 9:3 | And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. | "Such language is impious," said some of the Scribes among themselves. | And some of the scribes said among themselves, This man has no respect for God. |
Matthew 9:4 | And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? | Knowing their thoughts Jesus said, "Why are you cherishing evil thoughts in your hearts? | And Jesus, having knowledge of what was in their minds, said, Why are your thoughts evil? |
Matthew 9:5 | For which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven; or to say, Arise, and walk? | Why, which is easier? to say, `Your sins are pardoned,' or to say `Rise up and walk'? | For which is the simpler, to say, You have forgiveness for your sins; or to say, Get up and go? |
Matthew 9:6 | But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins (then saith he to the sick of the palsy), Arise, and take up thy bed, and go up unto thy house. | But, to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to pardon sins" He then says to the paralytic, "Rise, and take up your bed and go home." | But so that you may see that on earth the Son of man has authority for the forgiveness of sins, (then said he to the man who was ill,) Get up, and take up your bed, and go to your house. |
Matthew 9:7 | And he arose, and departed to his house. | And he got up, and went off home. | And he got up and went away to his house. |
Matthew 9:8 | But when the multitudes saw it, they were afraid, and glorified God, who had given such authority unto men. | And the crowds were awe-struck when they saw it, and ascribed the glory to God who had entrusted such power to a man. | But when the people saw it they were full of fear, and gave glory to God who had given such authority to men. |
Matthew 9:9 | And as Jesus passed by from thence, he saw a man, called Matthew, sitting at the place of toll: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. | Passing on thence Jesus saw a man called Matthew sitting at the Toll Office, and said to him, "Follow me." And he arose, and followed Him. | And when Jesus was going from there, he saw a man whose name was Matthew, seated at the place where taxes were taken; and he said to him, Come after me. And he got up and went after him. |
Matthew 9:10 | And it came to pass, as he sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. | And while He was reclining at table, a large number of tax-gathers and notorious sinners were of the party with Jesus and His disciples. | And it came about, when he was in the house taking food, that a number of tax-farmers and sinners came and took their places with Jesus and his disciples. |
Matthew 9:11 | And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Teacher with the publicans and sinners? | The Pharisees noticed this, and they inquired of His disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with the tax-gatherers and notorious sinners?" | And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why does your Master take food with tax-farmers and sinners? |
Matthew 9:12 | But when he heard it, he said, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick. | He heard the question and replied, "It is not men in good health who require a doctor, but the sick. | But on hearing this he said, Those who are well have no need of a medical man, but those who are ill. |
Matthew 9:13 | But go ye and learn what [this] meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners. | But go and learn what this means, `It is mercy that I desire, not sacrifice'; for I did not come to appeal to the righteous, but to sinners." | But go and take to heart the sense of these words, My desire is for mercy, not offerings: for I have come not to get the upright, but sinners. |
Matthew 9:14 | Then come to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? | At that time John's disciples came and asked Jesus, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?" | Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees frequently go without food, but your disciples do not? |
Matthew 9:15 | And Jesus said unto them, Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then will they fast. | "Can the bridegroom's party mourn," He replied, "as long as the bridegroom is with them? But other days will come (when the Bridegroom has been taken from them) and then they will fast. | And Jesus said to them, Will the friends of the newly-married man be sad as long as he is with them? But the days will come when he will be taken away from them, and then will they go without food. |
Matthew 9:16 | And no man putteth a piece of undressed cloth upon an old garment; for that which should fill it up taketh from the garment, and a worse rent is made. | No one ever mends an old cloak with a patch of newly woven cloth. Otherwise, the patch put on would tear away some of the old, and a worse hole would be made. | And no man puts a bit of new cloth on an old coat, for by pulling away from the old, it makes a worse hole. |
Matthew 9:17 | Neither do [men] put new wine into old wine-skins: else the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins perish: but they put new wine into fresh wine-skins, and both are preserved. | Nor do people pour new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins would split, the wine would escape, and the skins be destroyed. But they put new wine into fresh skins, and both are saved." | And men do not put new wine into old wine-skins; or the skins will be burst and the wine will come out, and the skins are of no more use: but they put new wine into new wine-skins, and so the two will be safe. |
Matthew 9:18 | While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. | While He was thus speaking, a Ruler came up and profoundly bowing said, "My daughter is just dead; but come and put your hand upon her and she will return to life." | While he was saying these things to them, there came a ruler and gave him worship, saying, My daughter is even now dead; but come and put your hand on her, and she will come back to life. |
Matthew 9:19 | And Jesus arose, and followed him, and [so did] his disciples. | And Jesus rose and followed him, as did also His disciples. | And Jesus got up and went after him, and so did his disciples. |
Matthew 9:20 | And behold, a woman, who had an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: | But a woman who for twelve years had been afflicted with haemorrhage came behind Him and touched the tassel of His cloak; | And a woman, who for twelve years had had a flow of blood, came after him, and put her hand on the edge of his robe: |
Matthew 9:21 | for she said within herself, If I do but touch his garment, I shall be made whole. | for she said to herself, "If I but touch His cloak, I shall be cured." | Because, she said to herself, if I may but put my hand on his robe, I will be made well. |
Matthew 9:22 | But Jesus turning and seeing her said, Daughter, be of good cheer; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. | And Jesus turned and saw her, and said, "Take courage, daughter; your faith has cured you." And the woman was restored to health from that moment. | But Jesus, turning and seeing her, said, Daughter, take heart; your faith has made you well. And the woman was made well from that hour. |

Matthew 9:24 | he said, Give place: for the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. | and He said, "Go out of the room; the little girl is not dead, but asleep." And they laughed at Him. | He said, Make room; for the girl is not dead, but sleeping. And they were laughing at him. |
Matthew 9:25 | But when the crowd was put forth, he entered in, and took her by the hand; and the damsel arose. | When however the place was cleared of the crowd, Jesus went in, and on His taking the little girl by the hand, she rose up. | But when the people were sent out, he went in and took her by the hand; and the girl got up. |
Matthew 9:26 | And the fame hereof went forth into all that land. | And the report of this spread throughout all that district. | And the news of it went out into all that land. |
Matthew 9:27 | And as Jesus passed by from thence, two blind men followed him, crying out, and saying, Have mercy on us, thou son of David. | As Jesus passed on, two blind men followed Him, shouting and saying, "Pity us, Son of David." | And when Jesus went on from there, two blind men came after him, crying out, Have mercy on us, you Son of David. |
Matthew 9:28 | And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. | And when He had gone indoors, they came to Him. "Do you believe that I can do this?" He asked them. "Yes, Sir," they replied. | And when he had come into the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, Have you faith that I am able to do this? They said to him, Yes, Lord. |
Matthew 9:29 | Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it done unto you. | So He touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith let it be to you." | Then he put his hand on their eyes, saying, As your faith is, let it be done to you. |
Matthew 9:30 | And their eyes were opened. And Jesus strictly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. | Then their eyes were opened. And assuming a stern tone Jesus said to them, "Be careful to let no one know." | And their eyes were made open. And Jesus said to them sharply, Let no man have knowledge of it. |
Matthew 9:31 | But they went forth, and spread abroad his fame in all that land. | But they went out and published His fame in all that district. | But they went out and gave news of him in all that land. |
Matthew 9:32 | And as they went forth, behold, there was brought to him a dumb man possessed with a demon. | And as they were leaving His presence a dumb demoniac was brought to Him. | And while they were going away, there came to him a man without the power of talking, and with an evil spirit. |
Matthew 9:33 | And when the demon was cast out, the dumb man spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. | When the demon was expelled, the dumb man could speak. And the crowds exclaimed in astonishment, "Never was such a thing seen in Israel." | And when the evil spirit had been sent out, the man had the power of talking: and they were all surprised, saying, Such a thing has never been seen in Israel. |
Matthew 9:34 | But the Pharisees said, By the prince of the demons casteth he out demons. | But the Pharisees maintained, "It is by the power of the Prince of the demons that he drives out the demons." | But the Pharisees said, By the ruler of evil spirits, he sends evil spirits out of men. |

Matthew 9:36 | But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were distressed and scattered, as sheep not having a shepherd. | And when He saw the crowds He was touched with pity for them, because they were distressed and were fainting on the ground like sheep which have no shepherd. | But when he saw all the people he was moved with pity for them, because they were troubled and wandering like sheep without a keeper. |
Matthew 9:37 | Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest indeed is plenteous, but the laborers are few. | Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest is abundant, but the reapers are few; | Then he said to his disciples, There is much grain but not enough men to get it in. |
Matthew 9:38 | Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth laborers into his harvest. | therefore entreat the Owner of the Harvest to send out reapers into His fields." | Make prayer, then, to the Lord of the grain-fields, that he may send out workers to get in his grain. |
