Luke 20:1And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders; On one of those days while He was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming the Good News, the High Priests came upon Him, and the Scribes,And it came to pass on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and announcing the glad tidings, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up,
Luke 20:2and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? together with the Elders, and they asked Him, "Tell us, By what authority are you doing these things? And who is it that gave you this authority?"and spoke to him saying, Tell us by what authority thou doest these things, or who is it who has given thee this authority?
Luke 20:3And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me: "I also will put a question to you, "He said;And he answering said to them, *I* also will ask you [one] thing, and tell me:
Luke 20:4The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? "was John's baptism of Heavenly or of human origin?"The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men?
Luke 20:5And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him? So they debated the matter with one another. "If we say `Heavenly,'" they argued, "he will say, `Why did you not believe him?'And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him?
Luke 20:6But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. And if we say, `human,' the people will all stone us; for they are thoroughly convinced that John was a Prophet."but if we should say, Of men, the whole people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.
Luke 20:7And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was]. And they answered that they did not know the origin of it.And they answered, they did not know whence.
Luke 20:8And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. "Nor will I tell you," said Jesus, "by what authority I do these things."And Jesus said to them, Neither do *I* tell you by what authority I do these things.
Luke 20:9And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time. Then He proceeded to speak a parable to the people. "There was a man," He said, "who planted a vineyard, let it out to vine-dressers, and went abroad for a considerable time.And he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country for a long time.
Luke 20:10And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. At vintage-time he sent a servant to the vine-dressers, for them to give him a share of the crop; but the vine-dressers beat him cruelly and sent him away empty-handed.And in the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman, that they might give to him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen, having beaten him, sent [him] away empty.
Luke 20:11And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty. Then he sent a second servant; and him too they beat and ill treated and sent away empty-handed.And again he sent another bondman; but they, having beaten him also, and cast insult upon him, sent [him] away empty.
Luke 20:12And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth. Then again he sent a third; and this one also they wounded and drove away.And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast [him] out.
Luke 20:13And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him. Then the owner of the vineyard said, "`What am I to do? I will send my son my dearly-loved son: they will probably respect him.'And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect [him].
Luke 20:14But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. "But when the vine-dressers saw him, they discussed the matter with one another, and said, "`This is the heir: let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; [come,] let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.
Luke 20:15And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them? "So they turned him out of the vineyard and murdered him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed [him]. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them?
Luke 20:16He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. He will come and put these vine-dressers to death, and give the vineyard to others." "God forbid!" exclaimed the hearers.He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be!
Luke 20:17But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner? He looked at them and said, "What then does that mean which is written, "`The Stone which the builders rejected has been made the cornerstone'?But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone?
Luke 20:18Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust. Every one who falls on that stone will be severely hurt, but on whomsoever it falls, he will be utterly crushed."Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.
Luke 20:19And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them. At this the Scribes and the High Priests wanted to lay hands on Him, then and there; only they were afraid of the people. For they saw that in this parable He had referred to them.And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them.
Luke 20:20And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor. So, after impatiently watching their opportunity, they sent spies who were to act the part of good and honest men, that they might fasten on some expression of His, so as to hand Him over to the ruling power and the Governor's authority.And having watched [him], they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in [his] language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.
Luke 20:21And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person [of any], but of a truth teachest the way of God: So they put a question to Him. "Rabbi," they said, "we know that you say and teach what is right and that you make no distinctions between one man and another, but teach God's way truly.And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no [man's] person, but teachest with truth the way of God:
Luke 20:22Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? Is it allowable to pay a tax to Caesar, or not?"Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
Luke 20:23But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, But He saw through their knavery and replied,But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me?
Luke 20:24Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Caesar's. "Show me a shilling; whose likeness and inscription does it bear?" "Caesar's," they said.Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's.
Luke 20:25And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. "Pay therefore," He replied, "what is Caesar's to Caesar and what is God's to God."And he said to them, Pay therefore what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God.
Luke 20:26And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. There was nothing here that they could lay hold of before the people, and marvelling at His answer they said no more.And they were not able to take hold of him in [his] expressions before the people, and, wondering at his answer, they were silent.
Luke 20:27And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection; Next some of the Sadducees came forward (who deny that there is a Resurrection), and they asked Him,And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, coming up [to him],
Luke 20:28and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man's brother die, having a wife, and he be childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. "Rabbi, Moses made it a law for us that if a man's brother should die, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up a family for his brother.demanded of him saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother, who has a wife, die, and he die childless, his brother shall take the wife and raise up seed to his brother.
Luke 20:29There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died childless; Now there were seven brothers. The first of them took a wife and died childless.There were then seven brethren: and the first, having taken a wife, died childless;
Luke 20:30and the second: The second and the third also took her;and the second [took the woman, and *he* died childless];
Luke 20:31and the third took her; and likewise the seven also left no children, and died. and all seven, having done the same, left no children when they died.and the third took her: and in like manner also the seven left no children and died;
Luke 20:32Afterward the woman also died. Finally the woman also died.and last of all the woman also died.
Luke 20:33In the resurrection therefore whose wife of them shall she be? for the seven had her to wife. The woman, then at the Resurrection whose wife shall she be? for they all seven married her."In the resurrection therefore of which of them does she become wife, for the seven had her as wife?
Luke 20:34And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage: "The men of this age," replied Jesus, "marry, and the women are given in marriage.And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world marry and are given in marriage,
Luke 20:35but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: But as for those who shall have been deemed worthy to find a place in that other age and in the Resurrection from among the dead, the men do not marry and the women are not given in marriage.but they who are counted worthy to have part in that world, and the resurrection from among [the] dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;
Luke 20:36for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. For indeed they cannot die again; they are like angels, and are sons of God through being sons of the Resurrection.for neither can they die any more, for they are equal to angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Luke 20:37But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in [the place concerning] the Bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. But that the dead rise to life even Moses clearly implies in the passage about the Bush, where he calls the Lord `The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'But that the dead rise, even Moses shewed in [the section of] the bush, when he called [the] Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob;
Luke 20:38Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. He is not a God of dead, but of living men, for to Him are all living."but he is not God of [the] dead but of [the] living; for all live for him.
Luke 20:39And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said. Then some of the Scribes replied, "Rabbi, you have spoken well."And some of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well spoken.
Luke 20:40For they durst not any more ask him any question. From that time, however, no one ventured to challenge Him with a single question.For they did not dare any more to ask him anything.
Luke 20:41And he said unto them, How say they that the Christ is David's son? But He asked them, "How is it they say that the Christ is a son of David?And he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is David's son,
Luke 20:42For David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms, "`The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right handand David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand
Luke 20:43Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet. Until I have made thy foes a footstool under they feet.'until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet?
Luke 20:44David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son? "David himself therefore calls Him Lord, and how can He be his son?"David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son?
Luke 20:45And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples, Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to the disciples,And, as all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,
Luke 20:46Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts; "Beware of the Scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and love to be bowed to in places of public resort and to occupy the best seats in the synagogues or at a dinner party;Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and who love salutations in the market-places, and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;
Luke 20:47who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation. who swallow up the property of widows and mask their wickedness by making long prayers. They will be punished far more severely than others."who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment.
