Now a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.
John 11:2And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. (It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.)(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
John 11:3The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill."His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
John 11:4But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby. Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it."And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
John 11:6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was. When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.
John 11:7Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea."Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.
John 11:8The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? "Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?"The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?
John 11:9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. "Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:
John 11:10But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him. But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.
John 11:11These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him."These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover. "Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover."His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
John 11:13Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep. But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.
John 11:14Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. So then He told them plainly,Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. "Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him."And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.
John 11:16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. "Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him."Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.
John 11:17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb.Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.
John 11:18Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off; Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles;(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)

John 11:20Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house. Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house.Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.
John 11:21Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died.Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:22And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee. And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you."But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
John 11:23Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. "Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus.Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.
John 11:24Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. "I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day."Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.
John 11:25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live; "I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live;Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:
John 11:26and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this? and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?"And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?
John 11:27She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, [even] he that cometh into the world. "Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.
John 11:28And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is her, and calleth thee. After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you."And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.
John 11:29And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him. So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him.She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.
John 11:30(Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.) Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.
John 11:31The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there. So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there. The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.
John 11:32Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews [also] weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,
John 11:34and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see. though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply. And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.
John 11:35Jesus wept. Jesus wept. And Jesus wept.
John 11:36The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him! "See how dear he held him," said the Jews. The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.
John 11:37But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die? But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?"But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?
John 11:38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it.Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.
John 11:39Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been [dead] four days. "Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died."Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.
John 11:40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God? "Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?"Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?
John 11:41So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me. So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me.They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.
John 11:42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me. I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this that they may believe that Thou didst send me."And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
John 11:43And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.
John 11:44He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free."And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.
John 11:45Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him. Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds became believers in Him;Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.
John 11:46But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done. though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done. But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.
John 11:47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs. Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles. The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?
John 11:48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation."If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.
John 11:49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it.But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.
John 11:50nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish."Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
John 11:51Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation; It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation,And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad. and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God.And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.
John 11:53So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death. So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death. From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.
John 11:54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples. Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples.Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.
John 11:55Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves. The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.
John 11:56They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast? They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? will he come to the Festival at all?"They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.
John 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him. Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him.
