John 5:1 | After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, | After this there was a Festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
John 5:2 | Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep [gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches. | and there is in Jerusalem by the sheep-[gate] a pool that is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches, | Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew `Bethesda.' It has five arcades. |
John 5:3 | In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered, [waiting for the moving of the water.] | in these were lying a great multitude of the ailing, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water, | In these there used to lie a great number of sick persons, and of people who were blind or lame or paralyzed. |
John 5:4 | [for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.] | for a messenger at a set time was going down in the pool, and was troubling the water, the first then having gone in after the troubling of the water, became whole of whatever sickness he was held. | [] |
John 5:5 | And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity. | and there was a certain man there being in ailment thirty and eight years, | And there was one man there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. |
John 5:6 | When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole? | him Jesus having seen lying, and having known that he is already a long time, he saith to him, `Dost thou wish to become whole?` | Jesus saw him lying there, and knowing that he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him, "Do you wish to have health and strength?" |
John 5:7 | The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. | The ailing man answered him, `Sir, I have no man, that, when the water may be troubled, he may put me into the pool, and while I am coming, another doth go down before me.` | "Sir," replied the sufferer, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is moved; but while I am coming some one else steps down before me." |
John 5:8 | Jesus saith unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. | Jesus saith to him, `Rise, take up thy couch, and be walking;` | "Rise," said Jesus, "take up your mat and walk." |
John 5:9 | And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day. | and immediately the man became whole, and he took up his couch, and was walking, and it was a sabbath on that day, | Instantly the man was restored to perfect health, and he took up his mat and began to walk. |
John 5:10 | So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. | the Jews then said to him that hath been healed, `It is a sabbath; it is not lawful to thee to take up the couch.` | That day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the Sabbath: you must not carry your mat." |
John 5:11 | But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. | He answered them, `He who made me whole that one said to me, Take up thy couch, and be walking;` | "He who cured me," he replied, "said to me, `Take up your mat and walk.'" |
John 5:12 | They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up [thy bed], and walk? | they questioned him, then, `Who is the man who is saying to thee, Take up thy couch and be walking?` | "Who is it," they asked, "that said to you, `Take up your mat and walk'?" |
John 5:13 | But he that was healed knew not who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in the place. | But he that was healed had not known who he is, for Jesus did move away, a multitude being in the place. | But the man who had been cured did not know who it was; for Jesus had passed out unnoticed, there being a crowd in the place. |
John 5:14 | Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee. | After these things, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, `Lo, thou hast become whole; sin no more, lest something worse may happen to thee.` | Afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him, "You are now restored to health. Do not sin any more, or a worse thing may befall you." |
John 5:15 | The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole. | The man went away, and told the Jews that it is Jesus who made him whole, | The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had restored him to health; |
John 5:16 | And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. | and because of this were the Jews persecuting Jesus, and seeking to kill him, because these things he was doing on a sabbath. | and on this account the Jews began to persecute Jesus because He did these things on the Sabbath. |
John 5:17 | But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh even until now, and I work. | And Jesus answered them, `My Father till now doth work, and I work;` | His reply to their accusation was, "My Father works unceasingly, and so do I." |
John 5:18 | For this cause therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only brake the sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. | because of this, then, were the Jews seeking the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the sabbath, but he also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God. | On this account then the Jews were all the more eager to put Him to death because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also spoke of God as being in a special sense His Father, thus putting Himself on a level with God. |
John 5:19 | Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doeth, these the Son also doeth in like manner. | Jesus therefore responded and said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything of himself, if he may not see the Father doing anything; for whatever things He may do, these also the Son in like manner doth; | "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that the Son can do nothing of Himself He can only do what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, that the Son does in like manner. |
John 5:20 | For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and greater works than these will he show him, that ye may marvel. | for the Father doth love the Son, and doth shew to him all things that He himself doth; and greater works than these He will shew him, that ye may wonder. | For the Father loves the Son and reveals to Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater deeds than these will He reveal to Him, in order that you may wonder. |
John 5:21 | For as the Father raiseth the dead and giveth them life, even so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. | `For, as the Father doth raise the dead, and doth make alive, so also the Son doth make alive whom he willeth; | For just as the Father awakens the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wills. |
John 5:22 | For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son; | for neither doth the Father judge any one, but all the judgment He hath given to the Son, | The Father indeed does not judge any one, but He has entrusted all judgement to the Son, |
John 5:23 | that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father that sent him. | that all may honour the Son according as they honour the Father; he who is not honouring the Son, doth not honour the Father who sent him. | that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. The man who withholds honour from the Son withholds honour from the Father who sent Him. |
John 5:24 | Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life. | `Verily, verily, I say to you He who is hearing my word, and is believing Him who sent me, hath life age-during, and to judgment he doth not come, but hath passed out of the death to the life. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that he who listens to my teaching and believes Him who sent me, has the Life of the Ages, and does not come under judgement, but has passed over out of death into Life. |
John 5:25 | Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. | `Verily, verily, I say to you There cometh an hour, and it now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard shall live; | "In most solemn truth I tell you that a time is coming nay, has already come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live. |
John 5:26 | For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself: | for, as the Father hath life in himself, so He gave also to the Son to have life in himself, | For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in Himself. |
John 5:27 | and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. | and authority He gave him also to do judgment, because he is Son of Man. | And He has conferred on Him authority to act as Judge, because He is the Son of Man. |
John 5:28 | Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice, | `Wonder not at this, because there doth come an hour in which all those in the tombs shall hear his voice, | Wonder not at this. For a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and will come forth |
John 5:29 | and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. | and they shall come forth; those who did the good things to a rising again of life, and those who practised the evil things to a rising again of judgment. | they who have done what is right to the resurrection of Life, and they whose actions have been evil to the resurrection of judgement. |
John 5:30 | I can of myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is righteous; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. | `I am not able of myself to do anything; according as I hear I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me. | "I can of my own self do nothing. As I am bidden, so I judge; and mine is a just judgement, because it is not my own will that guides me, but the will of Him who sent me. |
John 5:31 | If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. | `If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true; | "If I give testimony concerning myself, my testimony cannot be accepted. |
John 5:32 | It is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. | another there is who is testifying concerning me, and I have known that the testimony that he doth testify concerning me is true; | There is Another who gives testimony concerning me, and I know that the testimony is true which He offers concerning me. |
John 5:33 | Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth. | ye have sent unto John, and he hath testified to the truth. | "You sent to John, and he both was and still is a witness to the truth. |
John 5:34 | But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved. | `But I do not receive testimony from man, but these things I say that ye may be saved; | But the testimony on my behalf which I accept is not from man; though I say all this in order that you may be saved. |
John 5:35 | He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light. | he was the burning and shining lamp, and ye did will to be glad, for an hour, in his light. | He was the lamp that burned and shone, and for a time you were willing to be gladdened by his light. |
John 5:36 | But the witness which I have is greater than [that of] John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. | `But I have the testimony greater than John`s, for the works that the Father gave me, that I might finish them, the works themselves that I do, they testify concerning me, that the Father hath sent me. | "But the testimony which I have is weightier than that of John; for the work the Father has assigned to me for me to bring it to completion the very work which I am doing affords testimony concerning me that the Father has sent me. |
John 5:37 | And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. | `And the Father who sent me Himself hath testified concerning me; ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor His appearance have ye seen; | And the Father who sent me, *He* has given testimony concerning me. None of you have ever either heard His voice or seen what He is like. |
John 5:38 | And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not. | and His word ye have not remaining in you, because whom He sent, him ye do not believe. | Nor have you His word dwelling within you, for you refuse to believe Him whom *He* has sent. |
John 5:39 | Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me; | `Ye search the Writings, because ye think in them to have life age-during, and these are they that are testifying concerning me; | "You search the Scriptures, because you suppose that in them you will find the Life of the Ages; and it is those Scriptures that yield testimony concerning me; |
John 5:40 | and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. | and ye do not will to come unto me, that ye may have life; | and yet you are unwilling to come to me that you may have Life. |
John 5:41 | I receive not glory from men. | glory from man I do not receive, | "I do not accept glory from man, |
John 5:42 | But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves. | but I have known you, that the love of God ye have not in yourselves. | but I know you well, and I know that in your hearts you do not really love God. |
John 5:43 | I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. | `I have come in the name of my Father, and ye do not receive me; if another may come in his own name, him ye will receive; | I have come as my Father's representative, and you do not receive me. If some one else comes representing only himself, him you will receive. |
John 5:44 | How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that [cometh] from the only God ye seek not? | how are ye able ye to believe, glory from one another receiving, and the glory that [is] from God alone ye seek not? | How is it possible for you to believe, while you receive glory from one another and have no desire for the glory that comes from the only God? |
John 5:45 | Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, [even] Moses, on whom ye have set your hope. | `Do not think that I will accuse you unto the Father; there is who is accusing you, Moses in whom ye have hoped; | "Do not suppose that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, namely Moses, on whom your hope rests. |
John 5:46 | For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote of me. | for if ye were believing Moses, ye would have been believing me, for he wrote concerning me; | For if you believe Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. |
John 5:47 | But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? | but if his writings ye believe not, how shall ye believe my sayings?` | But if you disbelieve his writings, how are you to believe my words?" |
