Luke 20:1And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders; And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon [him],It happened on one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, that the chief priests and scribes came to him with the elders.
Luke 20:2and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? and spake unto him, saying, `Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?`They asked him, "Tell us: by what authority do you do these things? Or who is giving you this authority?"
Luke 20:3And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me: And he answering said unto them, `I will question you I also one thing, and tell me:He answered them, "I also will ask you one question. Tell me:
Luke 20:4The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?`the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?"
Luke 20:5And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him? And they reasoned with themselves, saying `If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him?They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why didn't you believe him?'
Luke 20:6But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.`But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."
Luke 20:7And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was]. And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was],They answered that they didn't know where it was from.
Luke 20:8And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. and Jesus said to them, `Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.`Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
Luke 20:9And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time. And he began to speak unto the people this simile: `A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,He began to tell the people this parable. "A man planted a vineyard, and rented it out to some farmers, and went into another country for a long time.
Luke 20:10And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send [him] away empty.At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him, and sent him away empty.
Luke 20:11And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty. `And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty;He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
Luke 20:12And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth. and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him, and threw him out.
Luke 20:13And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him. `And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence;The lord of the vineyard said, 'What will I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.'
Luke 20:14But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours;But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'
Luke 20:15And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them? and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed [him]; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them?They threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?
Luke 20:16He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.` And having heard, they said, `Let it not be!`He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others." When they heard it, they said, "God forbid!"
Luke 20:17But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner? and he, having looked upon them, said, `What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected this became head of a corner?But he looked at them, and said, "Then what is this that is written, 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the chief cornerstone?'
Luke 20:18Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust. every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.`"Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush whoever it falls on to dust."
Luke 20:19And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them. And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile.The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on Him that very hour, but they feared the people for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
Luke 20:20And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor. And, having watched [him], they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,They watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.
Luke 20:21And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person [of any], but of a truth teachest the way of God: and they questioned him, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;They asked him, "Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.
Luke 20:22Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?`Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"
Luke 20:23But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, `Why me do ye tempt?But he perceived their slyness, and said to them, "Why do you test me?
Luke 20:24Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Caesar's. shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?` and they answering said, `Of Caesar:`Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?" They answered, "Caesar's."
Luke 20:25And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. and he said to them, `Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;`He said to them, "Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
Luke 20:26And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. and they were not able to take hold on his saying before the people, and having wondered at his answer, they were silent.They weren't able to trap him in his words before the people. They marveled at his answer, and were silent.
Luke 20:27And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection; And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection.
Luke 20:28and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man's brother die, having a wife, and he be childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. saying, `Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one`s brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother.They asked him, "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up children for his brother.
Luke 20:29There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died childless; `There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless,There were therefore seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless.
Luke 20:30and the second: and the second took the wife, and he died childless,The second took her as wife, and he died childless.
Luke 20:31and the third took her; and likewise the seven also left no children, and died. and the third took her, and in like manner also the seven they left not children, and they died;The third took her, and likewise the seven all left no children, and died.
Luke 20:32Afterward the woman also died. and last of all died also the woman:Afterward the woman also died.
Luke 20:33In the resurrection therefore whose wife of them shall she be? for the seven had her to wife. in the rising again, then, of which of them doth she become wife? for the seven had her as wife.`Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For the seven had her as a wife."
Luke 20:34And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage: And Jesus answering said to them, `The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage,Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry, and are given in marriage.
Luke 20:35but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage;But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.
Luke 20:36for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. for neither are they able to die any more for they are like messengers and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again.For neither can they die any more, for they are like the angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Luke 20:37But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in [the place concerning] the Bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. `And that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the Bush, since he doth call the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord 'The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'
Luke 20:38Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. and He is not a God of dead men, but of living, for all live to Him.`Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him."
Luke 20:39And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said. And certain of the scribes answering said, `Teacher, thou didst say well;`Some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you speak well."
Luke 20:40For they durst not any more ask him any question. and no more durst they question him anything.They didn't dare to ask him any more questions.
Luke 20:41And he said unto them, How say they that the Christ is David's son? And he said unto them, `How do they say the Christ to be son of David,He said to them, "Why do they say that the Christ is David's son?
Luke 20:42For David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, and David himself saith in the Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand,David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand,
Luke 20:43Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet. till I shall make thine enemies thy footstool;Until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet."'
Luke 20:44David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son? David, then, doth call him lord, and how is he his son?`"David therefore calls him Lord, so how is he his son?"
Luke 20:45And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples, And, all the people hearing, he said to his disciples,In the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples,
Luke 20:46Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts; `Take heed of the scribes, who are wishing to walk in long robes, and are loving salutations in the markets, and first seats in the synagogues, and first couches in the suppers,"Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts;
Luke 20:47who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation. who devour the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, these shall receive more abundant judgment.`who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these will receive greater condemnation."
