1st-Peter 4:1 | So that as Jesus was put to death in the flesh, do you yourselves be of the same mind; for the death of the flesh puts an end to sin; | Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; | Since, then, Christ has suffered in the flesh, you also must arm yourselves with a determination to do the same because he who has suffered in the flesh has done with sin |
1st-Peter 4:2 | So that you may give the rest of your lives in the flesh, not to the desires of men, but to the purpose of God. | that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. | that in future you may spend the rest of your earthly lives, governed not by human passions, but by the will of God. |
1st-Peter 4:3 | Because for long enough, in times past, we have been living after the way of the Gentiles, given up to the desires of the flesh, to drinking and feasting and loose behaviour and unclean worship of images; | For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries: | For you have given time enough in the past to the doing of the things which the Gentiles delight in pursuing, as you did, a course of habitual licence, debauchery, hard drinking, noisy revelry, drunkenness and unholy image-worship. |
1st-Peter 4:4 | And they are wondering that you no longer go with them in this violent wasting of life, and are saying evil things of you: | wherein they think strange that ye run not with [them] into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of [you]: | At this they are astonished that you do not run into the same excess of profligacy as they do; and they speak abusively of you. |
1st-Peter 4:5 | But they will have to give an account of themselves to him who is ready to be the judge of the living and the dead. | who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead. | But they will have to give account to Him who stands ready to pronounce judgement on the living and the dead. |
1st-Peter 4:6 | For this was the reason why the good news of Jesus was given even to the dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but might be living before God in the spirit. | For unto this end was the gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. | For it is with this end in view that the Good News was proclaimed even to some who were dead, that they may be judged, as all mankind will be judged, in the body, but may be living a godly life in the spirit. |
1st-Peter 4:7 | But the end of all things is near: so be serious in your behaviour and keep on the watch with prayer; | But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer: | But the end of all things is now close at hand: therefore be sober-minded and temperate, so that you may give yourselves to prayer. |
1st-Peter 4:8 | And most of all be warm in your love for one another; because in love there is forgiveness for sins without number: | above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins: | Above all continue to love one another fervently, for love throws a veil over a multitude of faults. |
1st-Peter 4:9 | Keep open house for all with a glad heart; | using hospitality one to another without murmuring: | Extend ungrudging hospitality towards one another. |
1st-Peter 4:10 | Making distribution among one another of whatever has been given to you, like true servants of the unmeasured grace of God; | according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God; | Whatever be the gifts which each has received, you must use them for one another's benefit, as good stewards of God's many-sided kindness. |
1st-Peter 4:11 | If anyone has anything to say, let it be as the words of God; if anyone has the desire to be the servant of others, let him do it in the strength which is given by God; so that in all things God may have the glory through Jesus Christ, whose are the glory and the power for ever. | if any man speaketh, [speaking] as it were oracles of God; is any man ministereth, [ministering] as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen. | If any one preaches, let it be as uttering God's truth; if any one renders a service to others, let it be in the strength which God supplies; so that in everything glory may be given to God in the name of Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the might to the Ages of the Ages. Amen. |
1st-Peter 4:12 | Dear brothers, do not be surprised, as if it was something strange, if your faith is tested as by fire: | Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, as though a strange thing happened unto you: | Dear friends, do not be surprised at finding that that scorching flame of persecution is raging among you to put you to the test as though some surprising thing were accidentally happening to you. |
1st-Peter 4:13 | But be glad that you are given a part in the pains of Christ; so that at the revelation of his glory you may have great joy. | but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exceeding joy. | On the contrary, in the degree that you share in the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice, so that at the unveiling of His glory you may also rejoice with triumphant gladness. |
1st-Peter 4:14 | If men say evil things of you because of the name of Christ, happy are you; for the Spirit of glory and of God is resting on you. | If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; because the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you. | You are to be envied, if you are being reproached for bearing the name of Christ; for in that case the Spirit of glory even the Spirit of God is resting upon you. |
1st-Peter 4:15 | Let no one among you undergo punishment as a taker of life, or as a thief, or as an evil-doer, or as one who is over-interested in other men's business; | For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men's matters: | But let not one of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evil-doer, or as a spy upon other people's business. |
1st-Peter 4:16 | But if he undergoes punishment as a Christian, that is no shame to him; let him give glory to God in this name. | but if [a man suffer] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name. | If, however, any one suffers because he is a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God for being permitted to bear that name. |
1st-Peter 4:17 | For the time has come for the judging, starting with the church of God; but if it makes a start with us, what will be the end of those who are not under the rule of God? | For the time [is come] for judgment to begin at the house of God: and if [it begin] first at us, what [shall be] the end of them that obey not the gospel of God? | For the time has come for judgement to begin, and to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who reject God's Good News? |
1st-Peter 4:18 | And if it is hard for even the good man to get salvation, what chance has the man without religion or the sinner? | And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear? | And if it is difficult even for a righteous man to be saved, what will become of irreligious men and sinners? |
1st-Peter 4:19 | For this reason let those who by the purpose of God undergo punishment, keep on in well-doing and put their souls into the safe hands of their Maker. | Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator. | Therefore also, let those who are suffering in accordance with the will of God entrust their souls in well-doing to a faithful Creator. |
