John 4:1Now when it was clear to the Lord that word had come to the ears of the Pharisees that Jesus was making more disciples than John and was giving them baptismWhen therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John Now as soon as the Master was aware that the Pharisees had heard it said, "Jesus is gaining and baptizing more disciples than John"
John 4:2(Though, in fact, it was his disciples who gave baptism, not Jesus himself),(although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples), though Jesus Himself did not baptize them, but His disciples did
John 4:3He went out of Judaea into Galilee again.he left Judea, and departed again into Galilee. He left Judaea and returned to Galilee.
John 4:4And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.And he must needs pass through Samaria. His road lay through Samaria,
John 4:5So he came to a town of Samaria which was named Sychar, near to the bit of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph:So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph: and so He came to Sychar, a town in Samaria near the piece of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
John 4:6Now Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, being tired after his journey, was resting by the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.and Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. Jacob's Well was there: and accordingly Jesus, tired out with His journey, sat down by the well to rest. It was about six o'clock in the evening.
John 4:7A woman of Samaria came to get water, and Jesus said to her, Give me some water.There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. Presently there came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus asked her to give Him some water;
John 4:8For his disciples had gone to the town to get food.For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food. for His disciples were gone to the town to buy provisions.
John 4:9The woman of Samaria said to him, Why do you, a Jew, make a request for water to me, a woman of Samaria? She said this because Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria.The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) "How is it," replied the woman, "that a Jew like you asks me, who am a woman and a Samaritan, for water?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
John 4:10In answer Jesus said, If you had knowledge of what God gives freely and who it is who says to you, Give me water, you would make your prayer to him, and he would give you living water.Jesus answered and said unto unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. "If you had known God's free gift," replied Jesus, "and who it is that said to you, `Give me some water,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
John 4:11The woman said to him, Sir, you have no vessel and the fountain is deep; from where will you get the living water?The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou that living water? "Sir," she said, "you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; so where can you get the living water from?
John 4:12Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the fountain and took the water of it himself, with his children and his cattle?Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle? Are you greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us the well, and himself drank from it, as did also his sons and his cattle?"
John 4:13Jesus said to her, Everyone who takes this water will be in need of it again:Jesus answered and said unto her, Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again: "Every one," replied Jesus, "who drinks any of this water will be thirsty again;
John 4:14But whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again; for the water I give him will become in him a fountain of eternal life.but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life. but whoever drinks any of the water that I shall give him will never, never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become a fountain within him of water springing up for the Life of the Ages."
John 4:15The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be in need again of drink and will not have to come all this way for it.The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw. "Sir," said the woman, "give me that water, that I may never be thirsty, nor continually come all the way here to draw from the well."
John 4:16Jesus said to her, Go, get your husband and come back here with him.Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. "Go and call your husband," said Jesus; "and come back."
John 4:17In answer, the woman said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have said rightly, I have no husband:The woman answered and said unto him, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, Thou saidst well, I have no husband: "I have no husband," she replied. "You rightly say that you have no husband," said Jesus;
John 4:18You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband: that was truly said.for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly. "for you have had five husbands, and the man you have at present is not your husband. You have spoken the truth in saying that."
John 4:19The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet.The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. "Sir," replied the woman, "I see that you are a Prophet.
John 4:20Our fathers gave worship on this mountain, but you Jews say that the right place for worship is in Jerusalem.Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Our forefathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."
John 4:21Jesus said to her, Woman, take my word for this; the time is coming when you will not give worship to the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father. "Believe me," said Jesus, "the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
John 4:22You give worship, but without knowledge of what you are worshipping: we give worship to what we have knowledge of: for salvation comes from the Jews.Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews. You worship One of whom you know nothing. We worship One whom we know; for salvation comes from the Jews.
John 4:23But the time is coming, and is even now here, when the true worshippers will give worship to the Father in the true way of the spirit, for these are the worshippers desired by the Father.But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers. But a time is coming nay, has already come when the true worshippers will worship the Father with true spiritual worship; for indeed the Father desires such worshippers.
John 4:24God is Spirit: then let his worshippers give him worship in the true way of the spirit.God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth. God is Spirit; and those who worship Him must bring Him true spiritual worship."
John 4:25The woman said to him, I am certain that the Messiah, who is named Christ, is coming; when he comes he will make all things clear to us.The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things. "I know," replied the woman, "that Messiah is coming `the Christ,' as He is called. When He has come, He will tell us everything."
John 4:26Jesus said to her, I, who am talking to you, am he.Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he]. "I am He," said Jesus "I who am now talking to you."
John 4:27At that point the disciples came back, and they were surprised to see him talking to a woman; but not one of them said to him, What is your purpose? or, Why are you talking to her?And upon this came his disciples; and they marvelled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her? Just then His disciples came, and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. Yet not one of them asked Him, "What is your wish?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
John 4:28Then the woman put down her water-pot and went into the town, and said to the people,So the woman left her waterpot, and went away into the city, and saith to the people, The woman however, leaving her pitcher, went away to the town, and called the people.
John 4:29Come and see a man who has been talking to me of everything I ever did! Is it possible that this is the Christ?Come, see a man, who told me all things that [ever] I did: can this be the Christ? "Come," she said, "and see a man who has told me everything I have ever done. Can this be the Christ, do you think?"
John 4:30So they went out of the town and came to him.They went out of the city, and were coming to him. They left the town and set out to go to Him.
John 4:31While this was taking place, the disciples were saying to Jesus, Master, take some food.In the mean while the disciples prayed him, saying, Rabbi, eat. Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus. "Rabbi," they said, "eat something."
John 4:32But he said to them, I have food of which you have no knowledge.But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not. "I have food to eat," He replied, "of which you do not know."
John 4:33So the disciples said one to another, Did anyone give him food?The disciples therefore said one to another, Hath any man brought him [aught] to eat? So the disciples began questioning one another. "Can it be," they said, "that some one has brought Him something to eat?"
John 4:34Jesus said, My food is to do the pleasure of him who sent me and to make his work complete.Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work. "My food," said Jesus, "is to be obedient to Him who sent me, and fully to accomplish His work.
John 4:35You would say, Four months from now is the time of the grain-cutting. Take a look, I say to you, at the fields; they are even now white for cutting.Say not ye, There are yet four months, and [then] cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest. Do you not say, `It wants four months yet to the harvest'? But look round, I tell you, and observe these plains they are already ripe for the sickle.
John 4:36He who does the cutting now has his reward; he is getting together fruit for eternal life, so that he who did the planting and he who gets in the grain may have joy together.He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. The reaper gets pay and gathers in a crop in preparation for the Life of the Ages, that so the sower and the reapers may rejoice together.
John 4:37In this the saying is a true one, One does the planting, and another gets in the grain.For herein is the saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. For it is in this that you see the real meaning of the saying, `The sower is one person, and the reaper is another.'
John 4:38I sent you to get in grain which you had no hand in planting: other men did that work, and you take the reward.I sent you to reap that whereon ye have not labored: others have labored, and ye are entered into their labor. I sent you to reap a harvest which is not the result of your own labours. Others have laboured, and you are getting benefit from their labours."
John 4:39Now a number of the people of that town had faith in him because of the woman's witness: He has been talking to me of everything I ever did.And from that city many of the Samaritans believed on him because of the word of the woman, who testified, He told me all things that [ever] I did. Of the Samaritan population of that town a good many believed in Him because of the woman's statement when she declared, "He has told me all that I have ever done."
John 4:40So when the people came to him they made request to him to be among them for a time, and he was there two days.So when the Samaritans came unto him, they besought him to abide with them: and he abode there two days. When however the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him on all sides to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
John 4:41And a great number more of them came to have faith in him because of what he himself said.And many more believed because of his word; Then a far larger number of people believed because of His own words,
John 4:42And they said to the woman, Now we have faith, but not because of your story: we ourselves have given ear to his words, and we are certain that he is truly the Saviour of the world.and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world. and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe in Him simply because of your statements; for we have now heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world."
John 4:43And after the two days he went on from there into Galilee.And after the two days he went forth from thence into Galilee. After the two days He departed, and went into Galilee;
John 4:44For Jesus himself said that a prophet has no honour in the country of his birth.For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country. though Jesus Himself declared that a Prophet has no honour in his own country.
John 4:45So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans took him to their hearts because of the things which they had seen him do in Jerusalem at the feast they themselves having been there at the feast.So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast. When however He reached Galilee, the Galilaeans welcomed Him eagerly, having been eye-witnesses of all that He had done in Jerusalem at the Festival; for they also had been to the Festival.
John 4:46So he came to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain man of high position whose son was ill at Capernaum.He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. So He came once more to Cana in Galilee, where He had made the water into wine. Now there was a certain officer of the King's court whose son was ill at Capernaum.
John 4:47When it came to his ears that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, he went to him and made a request that he would come down to his son, who was near to death, and make him well.When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought [him] that he would come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. Having heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee, he came to Him and begged Him to go down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death.
John 4:48Then Jesus said to him, You will not have faith if you do not see signs and wonders.Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe. "Unless you and others see miracles and marvels," said Jesus, "nothing will induce you to believe."
John 4:49The man said, Sir, come down before my boy is dead.The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. "Sir," pleaded the officer, "come down before my child dies."
John 4:50And Jesus said, Go in peace; your son is living. The man had faith in the word which Jesus said to him and went away.Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spake unto him, and he went his way. "You may return home," replied Jesus; "your son has recovered." He believed the words of Jesus, and started back home;
John 4:51And while he was going down, his servants came to him and said, Your boy is living.And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son lived. and he was already on his way down when his servants met him and told him that his son was alive and well.
John 4:52So he put a question to them as to the hour when he became better; and they said to him, The disease went from him yesterday at the seventh hour.So he inquired of them the hour when he began to amend. They said therefore unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So he inquired of them at what hour he had shown improvement. "Yesterday, about seven o'clock," they replied, "the fever left him."
John 4:53It was clear then to the father that this was the very time at which Jesus said to him, Your son is living. And he had faith in Jesus, he and all his family.So the father knew that [it was] at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. Then the father recollected that that was the time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son has recovered," and he and his whole household became believers.
John 4:54Now this is the second sign which Jesus did after he had come out of Judaea into Galilee.This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judaea into Galilee. This is the second miracle that Jesus performed, after coming from Judaea into Galilee.
