Luke 20:1And it came about on one of those days, when he was teaching the people in the Temple and preaching the good news,And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders; It happened on one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, that the chief priests and scribes came to him with the elders.
Luke 20:2That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority.and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? They asked him, "Tell us: by what authority do you do these things? Or who is giving you this authority?"
Luke 20:3And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer:And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me: He answered them, "I also will ask you one question. Tell me:
Luke 20:4The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?"
Luke 20:5And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him?And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him? They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why didn't you believe him?'
Luke 20:6But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet. But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."
Luke 20:7And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from. And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was]. They answered that they didn't know where it was from.
Luke 20:8And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things. And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
Luke 20:9And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time. And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time. He began to tell the people this parable. "A man planted a vineyard, and rented it out to some farmers, and went into another country for a long time.
Luke 20:10And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing. And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him, and sent him away empty.
Luke 20:11And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing. And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty. He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
Luke 20:12And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out.And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth. He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him, and threw him out.
Luke 20:13And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him.And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him. The lord of the vineyard said, 'What will I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.'
Luke 20:14But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours. But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'
Luke 20:15And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen? And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them? They threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?
Luke 20:16He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so.He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others." When they heard it, they said, "God forbid!"
Luke 20:17But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building? But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner? But he looked at them, and said, "Then what is this that is written, 'The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the chief cornerstone?'
Luke 20:18Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust. "Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush whoever it falls on to dust."
Luke 20:19And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them. And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them. The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on Him that very hour, but they feared the people for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
Luke 20:20And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor. They watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.
Luke 20:21And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person [of any], but of a truth teachest the way of God: They asked him, "Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.

Luke 20:24Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's.Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Caesar's. Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?" They answered, "Caesar's."
Luke 20:25And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's.And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. He said to them, "Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
Luke 20:26And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing. And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. They weren't able to trap him in his words before the people. They marveled at his answer, and were silent.

They asked him, "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up children for his brother.
Luke 20:29Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children; There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died childless; There were therefore seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless.

Luke 20:34And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives; And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage: Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry, and are given in marriage.
Luke 20:35But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married;but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.
Luke 20:36And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead.for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. For neither can they die any more, for they are like the angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Luke 20:37But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in [the place concerning] the Bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord 'The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'
Luke 20:38Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him.Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him."
