Matthew 27:1Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death.Now when morning was come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put him to death;
Matthew 27:2And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler.and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pilate the governor. and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
Matthew 27:3Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority,Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Then Judas he who delivered him up having seen that he was condemned, having repented, brought back the thirty silverlings to the chief priests, and to the elders, saying,
Matthew 27:4Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business.saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou [to it]. `I did sin, having delivered up innocent blood;` and they said, `What to us? thou shalt see!`
Matthew 27:5And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging.And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. and having cast down the silverlings in the sanctuary, he departed, and having gone away, he did strangle himself.
Matthew 27:6And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood.And the chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood. And the chief priests having taken the silverlings, said, `It is not lawful to put them to the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood;`
Matthew 27:7And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries.And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. and having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers;
Matthew 27:8For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day.Wherefore that field was called, the field of blood, unto this day. therefore was that field called, `Field of blood,` unto this day.
Matthew 27:9Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel;Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was priced, whom [certain] of the children of Israel did price; Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, `And I took the thirty silverlings, the price of him who hath been priced, whom they of the sons of Israel did price,
Matthew 27:10And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord.and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me. and gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord did appoint to me.`
Matthew 27:11And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so.Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor did question him, saying, `Art thou the king of the Jews!` And Jesus said to him, `Thou sayest.`
Matthew 27:12But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer.And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. And in his being accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not answer any thing,
Matthew 27:13Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you?Then saith Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? then saith Pilate to him, `Dost thou not hear how many things they witness against thee?`
Matthew 27:14And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised.And he gave him no answer, not even to one word: insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. And he did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor did wonder greatly.
Matthew 27:15Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection.Now at the feast the governor was wont to release unto the multitude one prisoner, whom they would. And at the feast the governor had been accustomed to release one to the multitude, a prisoner, whom they willed,
Matthew 27:16And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas.And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. and they had then a noted prisoner, called Barabbas,
Matthew 27:17So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ?When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? they therefore having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, `Whom will ye I shall release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?`
Matthew 27:18For he saw that for envy they had given him up.For he knew that for envy they had delivered him up. for he had known that because of envy they had delivered him up.
Matthew 27:19And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him.And while he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. And as he is sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent unto him, saying, `Nothing to thee and to that righteous one, for many things did I suffer to-day in a dream because of him.`
Matthew 27:20Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death.Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. And the chief priests and the elders did persuade the multitudes that they might ask for themselves Barabbas, and might destroy Jesus;
Matthew 27:21But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas.But the governor answered and said unto them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas. and the governor answering said to them, `Which of the two will ye [that] I shall release to you?` And they said, `Barabbas.`
Matthew 27:22Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross.Pilate saith unto them, What then shall I do unto Jesus who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified. Pilate saith to them, `What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?` They all say to him, `Let be crucified!`
Matthew 27:23And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him!And he said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, saying, Let him be crucified. And the governor said, `Why, what evil did he?` and they were crying out the more, saying, `Let be crucified.`
Matthew 27:24So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible.So when Pilate saw that he prevailed nothing, but rather that a tumult was arising, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; see ye [to it]. And Pilate having seen that it profiteth nothing, but rather a tumult is made, having taken water, he did wash the hands before the multitude, saying, `I am innocent from the blood of this righteous one; ye ye shall see;`
Matthew 27:25And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children.And all the people answered and said, His blood [be] on us, and on our children. and all the people answering said, `His blood [is] upon us, and upon our children!`
Matthew 27:26Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross.Then released he unto them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified. Then did he release to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered [him] up that he may be crucified;
Matthew 27:27Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together.Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered unto him the whole band. then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus to the Praetorium, did gather to him all the band;
Matthew 27:28And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe.And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. and having unclothed him, they put around him a crimson cloak,
Matthew 27:29And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews.And they platted a crown of thorns and put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! and having plaited him a crown out of thorns they put [it] on his head, and a reed in his right hand, and having kneeled before him, they were mocking him, saying, `Hail, the king of the Jews.`
Matthew 27:30And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod.And they spat upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head. And having spit on him, they took the reed, and were smiting on his head;
Matthew 27:31And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross.And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the robe, and put on him his garments, and led him away to crucify him. and when they had mocked him, they took off from him the cloak, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify [him].
Matthew 27:32And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross.And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to go [with them], that he might bear his cross. And coming forth, they found a man, a Cyrenian, by name Simon: him they impressed that he might bear his cross;
Matthew 27:33And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head,And they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, The place of a skull, and having come to a place called Golgotha, that is called Place of a Skull,
Matthew 27:34They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more.they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted it, he would not drink. they gave him to drink vinegar mixed with gall, and having tasted, he would not drink.
Matthew 27:35And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots; And having crucified him, they divided his garments, casting a lot, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the prophet, `They divided my garments to themselves, and over my vesture they cast a lot;`
Matthew 27:36And they were seated there watching him.and they sat and watched him there. and sitting down, they were watching him there,
Matthew 27:37And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.And they set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. and they put up over his head, his accusation written, `This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.`
Matthew 27:38Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left.Then are there crucified with him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left. Then crucified with him are two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on the left,
Matthew 27:39And those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying,And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and those passing by were speaking evil of him, wagging their heads,
Matthew 27:40You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself: if thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross. and saying, `Thou that art throwing down the sanctuary, and in three days building [it], save thyself; if Son thou art of God, come down from the cross.`
Matthew 27:41In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said,In like manner also the chief priests mocking [him], with the scribes and elders, said, And in like manner also the chief priests mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,
Matthew 27:42A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him.He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. `Others he saved; himself he is not able to save! If he be King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe him;
Matthew 27:43He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God.He trusteth on God; let him deliver him now, if he desireth him: for he said, I am the Son of God. he hath trusted on God, let Him now deliver him, if He wish him, because he said Son of God I am;`
Matthew 27:44And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him.And the robbers also that were crucified with him cast upon him the same reproach. with the same also the robbers, who were crucified with him, were reproaching him.
Matthew 27:45Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour.Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land unto the ninth hour,
Matthew 27:46And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, saying, `Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?` that is, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?`
Matthew 27:47And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah.And some of them stood there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elijah. And certain of those standing there having heard, said `Elijah he doth call;`
Matthew 27:48And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink.And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. and immediately, one of them having run, and having taken a spunge, having filled [it] with vinegar, and having put [it] on a reed, was giving him to drink,
Matthew 27:49And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help.And the rest said, Let be; let us see whether Elijah cometh to save him. but the rest said, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come about to save him.`
Matthew 27:50And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit.And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit. And Jesus having again cried with a great voice, yielded the spirit;
Matthew 27:51And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken;And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake; and the rocks were rent; and lo, the vail of the sanctuary was rent in two from top unto bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks were rent,
Matthew 27:52And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life;and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints that had fallen asleep were raised; and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who have fallen asleep, arose,
Matthew 27:53And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people.and coming forth out of the tombs after his resurrection they entered into the holy city and appeared unto many. and having come forth out of the tombs after his rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.
Matthew 27:54Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God.Now the centurion, and they that were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying, `Truly this was God`s Son.`
Matthew 27:55And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs.And many women were there beholding from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: And there were there many women beholding from afar, who did follow Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
Matthew 27:56Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Matthew 27:57And in the evening, there came a man of wealth from Arimathaea, Joseph by name, who was a disciple of Jesus:And when even was come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: And evening having come, there came a rich man, from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus,
Matthew 27:58This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him.this man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given up. he having gone near to Pilate, asked for himself the body of Jesus; then Pilate commanded the body to be given back.
Matthew 27:59And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen,And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And having taken the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,
Matthew 27:60And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away.and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. and laid it in his new tomb, that he hewed in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away;
Matthew 27:61And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead.And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. and there were there Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over-against the sepulchre.
Matthew 27:62Now on the day after the getting ready of the Passover, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,Now on the morrow, which is [the day] after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together unto Pilate, And on the morrow that is after the preparation, were gathered together the chief priests, and the Pharisees, unto Pilate,
Matthew 27:63Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead.saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive, After three days I rise again. saying, `Sir, we have remembered that that deceiver said while yet living, After three days I do rise;
Matthew 27:64Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest haply his disciples come and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first. command, then, the sepulchre to be made secure till the third day, lest his disciples, having come by night, may steal him away, and may say to the people, He rose from the dead, and the last deceit shall be worse than the first.`
Matthew 27:65Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able.Pilate said unto them, Ye have a guard: go, make it [as] sure as ye can. And Pilate said to them, `Ye have a watch, go away, make secure as ye have known;`
Matthew 27:66So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them.So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, the guard being with them. and they, having gone, did make the sepulchre secure, having sealed the stone, together with the watch.
