John 11:1 | Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. | Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister. | Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister. |
John 11:2 | (The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.) | It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. | (And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.) |
John 11:3 | So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill. | The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. | His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. |
John 11:4 | When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it. | But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. | And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it. |
John 11:5 | Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus. | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus. |
John 11:6 | So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days. | When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was. | When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days. |
John 11:7 | Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. | Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. | Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again. |
John 11:8 | The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again? | The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again? | The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again? |
John 11:9 | Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world. | Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; | Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: |
John 11:10 | But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him. | but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. | But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him. |
John 11:11 | These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep. | These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. | These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. |
John 11:12 | Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well. | The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well. | His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. |
John 11:13 | Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep. | But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep. | But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep. |
John 11:14 | Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead. | Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died. | Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead. |
John 11:15 | And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him. | And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him. | And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him. |
John 11:16 | Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death. | Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him. | Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him. |
John 11:17 | Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before. | Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb. | Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave. |
John 11:18 | Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away; | Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off, | (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.) |
John 11:19 | And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother. | and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother. | And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. |
John 11:20 | When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house. | Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house. | Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home. |
John 11:21 | Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. | Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; | Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. |
John 11:22 | But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you. | but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee. | But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. |
John 11:23 | Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again. | Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again. | Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again. |
John 11:24 | Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day. | Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day. | Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day. |
John 11:25 | Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead; | Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live; | Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live: |
John 11:26 | And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith? | and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this? | And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this? |
John 11:27 | She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. | She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world. | She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world. |
John 11:28 | And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you. | And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee. | And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee. |
John 11:29 | And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him. | She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him. | She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him. |
John 11:30 | Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him. | Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him. | For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him. |
John 11:31 | Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there. | The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there. | The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there. |
John 11:32 | When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. | Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. | When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. |
John 11:33 | And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled, | Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled, | Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself, |
John 11:34 | And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord. | and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see. | And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see. |
John 11:35 | And Jesus himself was weeping. | Jesus wept. | And Jesus wept. |
John 11:36 | So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him! | The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him! | The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him. |
John 11:37 | But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death? | And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died? | But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die? |
John 11:38 | So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening. | Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. | Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it. |
John 11:39 | Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days. | Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there]. | Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days. |
John 11:40 | Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God? | Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? | Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God? |
John 11:41 | So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me. | They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me; | They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me. |
John 11:42 | I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me. | but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me. | And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. |
John 11:43 | Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! | And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. | When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth. |
John 11:44 | And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go. | And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go. | And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go. |
John 11:45 | Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him. | Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him; | Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him. |
John 11:46 | But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done. | but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done. |
John 11:47 | Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs. | The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs. | The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles? |
John 11:48 | If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation. | If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. | If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation. |
John 11:49 | But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything; | But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing | But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing. |
John 11:50 | You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction. | nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish. | Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. |
John 11:51 | He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation; | But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; | And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation. |
John 11:52 | And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world. | and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. | And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed. |
John 11:53 | And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death. | From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him. | From that day therefore they devised to put him to death. |
John 11:54 | So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples. | Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples. | Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples. |
John 11:55 | Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover. | But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves. | And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves. |
John 11:56 | They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast? | They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast? | They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him. |
John 11:57 | Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him. | Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him. | |
