Luke 22:1 | Now the feast of unleavened bread was near, which is called the Passover. | Now the feast of unleavened bread, which [is] called the passover, drew nigh, | Meanwhile the Festival of the Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, |
Luke 22:2 | And the chief priests and the scribes were looking for a chance to put him to death, but they went in fear of the people. | and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. | and the High Priests and the Scribes were contriving how to destroy Him. But they feared the people. |
Luke 22:3 | And Satan came into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. | And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariote, being of the number of the twelve. | Satan, however, entered into Judas (the man called Iscariot) who was one of the Twelve. |
Luke 22:4 | And he went away and had a discussion with the chief priests and the rulers, about how he might give him up to them. | And he went away and spoke with the chief priests and captains as to how he should deliver him up to them. | He went and conferred with the High Priests and Commanders as to how he should deliver Him up to them. |
Luke 22:5 | And they were glad, and undertook to give him money. | And they were rejoiced, and agreed to give him money. | This gave them great pleasure, and they agreed to pay him. |
Luke 22:6 | And he made an agreement with them to give him up to them, if he got a chance, when the people were not present. | And he came to an agreement to do it, and sought an opportunity to deliver him up to them away from the crowd. | He accepted their offer, and then looked out for an opportunity to betray Him when the people were not there. |
Luke 22:7 | And the day of unleavened bread came, when the Passover lamb is put to death. | And the day of unleavened bread came, in which the passover was to be killed. | When the day of the Unleavened Bread came the day for the Passover lamb to be sacrificed |
Luke 22:8 | And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, Go and make the Passover ready for us, so that we may take it. | And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat [it]. | Jesus sent Peter and John with instructions. "Go," He said, "and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it." |
Luke 22:9 | And they said to him, Where are we to get it ready? | But they said to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare [it]? | "Where shall we prepare it?" they asked. |
Luke 22:10 | And he said to them, When you go into the town you will see a man coming to you with a vessel of water; go after him into the house into which he goes. | And he said to them, Behold, as ye enter into the city a man will meet you, carrying an earthen pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he goes in; | "You will no sooner have entered the city," He replied, "than you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him into the house to which he goes, |
Luke 22:11 | And say to the master of the house, The Master says, Where is the guest-room, where I may take the Passover with my disciples? | and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher says to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where I may eat the passover with my disciples? | and say to the master of the house, "`The Rabbi asks you, Where is the room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?' |
Luke 22:12 | And he will take you up to a great room with a table and seats: there make ready. | And *he* will shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. | "And he will show you a large furnished room upstairs. There make your preparations." |
Luke 22:13 | And they went, and it was as he had said: and they made the Passover ready. | And having gone they found it as he had said to them; and they prepared the passover. | So they went and found all as He had told them; and they got the Passover ready. |
Luke 22:14 | And when the time had come, he took his seat, and the Apostles with him. | And when the hour was come, he placed himself at table, and the [twelve] apostles with him. | When the time was come, and He had taken His place at table, and the Apostles with Him, |
Luke 22:15 | And he said, I have had a great desire to keep this Passover with you before I come to my death; | And he said to them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. | He said to them, "Earnestly have I longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; |
Luke 22:16 | For I say to you, I will not take it till it is made complete in the kingdom of God. | For I say unto you, that I will not eat any more at all of it until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. | for I tell you that I certainly shall not eat one again till its full meaning has been brought out in the Kingdom of God." |
Luke 22:17 | And he took a cup and, having given praise, he said, Make division of this among yourselves; | And having received a cup, when he had given thanks he said, Take this and divide it among yourselves. | Then, having received the cup and given thanks, He said, "Take this and share it among yourselves; |
Luke 22:18 | For I say to you, I will not take of the fruit of the vine till the kingdom of God has come. | For I say unto you, that I will not drink at all of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God come. | for I tell you that from this time I will never drink the produce of the vine till the Kingdom of God has come." |
Luke 22:19 | And he took bread and, having given praise, he gave it to them when it had been broken, saying, This is my body, which is given for you: do this in memory of me. | And having taken a loaf, when he had given thanks, he broke [it], and gave [it] to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. | Then, taking a Passover biscuit, He gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is being given on your behalf: this do in remembrance of me." |
Luke 22:20 | And in the same way, after the meal, he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new testament, made with my blood which is given for you. | In like manner also the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. | He gave them the cup in like manner, when the meal was over. "This cup," He said, "is the new Covenant ratified by my blood which is to be poured out on your behalf. |
Luke 22:21 | But the hand of him who is false to me is with me at the table. | Moreover, behold, the hand of him that delivers me up [is] with me on the table; | Yet the hand of him who is betraying me is at the table with me. |
Luke 22:22 | For it will be done to the Son of man after the purpose of God, but unhappy is that man by whom he is given up. | and the Son of man indeed goes as it is determined, but woe unto that man by whom he is delivered up. | For indeed the Son of Man goes on His way His pre-destined way; yet alas for that man who is betraying Him!" |
Luke 22:23 | And they were wondering among themselves which of them it was who would do this thing. | And *they* began to question together among themselves who then it could be of them who was about to do this. | Thereupon they began to discuss with one another which of them it could possibly be who was about to do this. |
Luke 22:24 | And there was an argument among them about which of them was the greatest. | And there was also a strife among them which of them should be held to be [the] greatest. | There arose also a dispute among them which of them should be regarded as greatest. |
Luke 22:25 | And he said, The kings of the Gentiles are lords over them, and those who have authority are given names of honour. | And he said to them, The kings of the nations rule over them, and they that exercise authority over them are called benefactors. | But He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles are their masters, and those who exercise authority over them are called Benefactors. |
Luke 22:26 | But let it not be so with you; but he who is greater, let him become like the younger; and he who is chief, like a servant. | But *ye* [shall] not [be] thus; but let the greater among you be as the younger, and the leader as he that serves. | With you it is not so; but let the greatest among you be as the younger, and the leader be like him who serves. |
Luke 22:27 | For which is greater, the guest who is seated at a meal or the servant who is waiting on him? is it not the guest? but I am among you as a servant. | For which [is] greater, he that is at table or he that serves? [Is] not he that is at table? But *I* am in the midst of you as the one that serves. | For which is the greater he who sits at table, or he who waits on him? Is it not he who sits at table? But my position among you is that of one who waits on others. |
Luke 22:28 | But you are those who have kept with me through my troubles; | But *ye* are they who have persevered with me in my temptations. | You however have remained with me amid my trials; |
Luke 22:29 | And I will give you a kingdom as my Father has given one to me, | And *I* appoint unto you, as my Father has appointed unto me, a kingdom, | and I covenant to give you, as my Father has covenanted to give me, a Kingdom |
Luke 22:30 | So that you may take food and drink at my table in my kingdom, and be seated like kings, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | so that you shall eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom, and sit on thrones as judges over the twelve tribes of Israel. |
Luke 22:31 | Simon, Simon, Satan has made a request to have you, so that he may put you to the test as grain is tested: | And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have you, to sift [you] as wheat; | "Simon, Simon, I tell you that Satan has obtained permission to have all of you to sift as wheat is sifted. |
Luke 22:32 | But I have made prayer for you, that your faith may not go from you: and when you are turned again, make your brothers strong. | but *I* have besought for thee that thy faith fail not; and *thou*, when once thou hast been restored, confirm thy brethren. | But *I* have prayed for *you* that your faith may not fail, and you, when at last you have come back to your true self, must strengthen your brethren." |
Luke 22:33 | And he said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death. | And he said to him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death. | "Master," replied Peter, "with you I am ready to go both to prison and to death." |
Luke 22:34 | And he said, I say to you, Peter, before the cock's second cry today, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. | And he said, I tell thee, Peter, [the] cock shall not crow to-day before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. | "I tell you, Peter," said Jesus, "that the cock will not crow to-day till you have three times denied that you know me." |
Luke 22:35 | And he said to them, When I sent you out without money or bag or shoes, were you in need of anything? And they said, Nothing. | And he said to them, When I sent you without purse and scrip and sandals, did ye lack anything? And they said, Nothing. | Then He asked them, "When I sent you out without purse or bag or shoes, was there anything you needed?" "No, nothing," they replied. |
Luke 22:36 | And he said to them, But now, he who has a money-bag, or a bag for food, let him take it: and he who has not, let him give his coat for money and get a sword. | He said therefore to them, But now he that has a purse let him take [it], in like manner also a scrip, and he that has none let him sell his garment and buy a sword; | "But now," said He, "let the one who has a purse take it, and he who has a bag must do the same. And let him who has no sword sell his outer garment and buy one. |
Luke 22:37 | For I say to you that these words will be put into effect in me, And he was numbered among the evil-doers: for what has been said in the Writings about me has an end. | for I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned with [the] lawless: for also the things concerning me have an end. | For I tell you that those words of Scripture must yet find their fulfilment in me: `And He was reckoned among the lawless'; for indeed that saying about me has its accomplishment." |
Luke 22:38 | And they said, Lord, here are two swords. And he said, It is enough. | And they said, Lord, behold here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough. | "Master, here are two swords," they exclaimed. "That is enough," He replied. |
Luke 22:39 | And he came out, and went, as his way was, to the Mountain of Olives, and the disciples went with him. | And going forth he went according to his custom to the mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. | On going out, He proceeded as usual to the Mount of Olives, and His disciples followed Him. |
Luke 22:40 | And when he came to the place, he said to them, Make a prayer that you may not be put to the test. | And when he was at the place he said to them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. | But when He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not come into temptation." |
Luke 22:41 | And he went a little distance away from them and, falling on his knees in prayer, he said, | And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and having knelt down he prayed, | But He Himself withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed repeatedly, saying, |
Luke 22:42 | Father, if it is your pleasure, take this cup from me: but still, let your pleasure, not mine, be done. | saying, Father, if thou wilt remove this cup from me: but then, not my will, but thine be done. | "Father, if it be Thy will, take this cup away from me; yet not my will but Thine be done!" |
Luke 22:43 | And an angel from heaven came to him, to give him strength. | And an angel appeared to him from heaven strengthening him. | And there appeared to Him an angel from Heaven, strengthening Him; |
Luke 22:44 | And being in great trouble of soul, the force of his prayer became stronger, and great drops, like blood, came from him, falling to the earth. | And being in conflict he prayed more intently. And his sweat became as great drops of blood, falling down upon the earth. | while He an agony of distress having come upon Him prayed all the more with intense earnestness, and His sweat became like clots of blood dropping on the ground. |
Luke 22:45 | And, getting up from prayer, he came to the disciples, and saw that they were sleeping for sorrow. | And rising up from his prayer, coming to the disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. | When He rose from his prayer and came to His disciples, He found them sleeping for sorrow. |
Luke 22:46 | And he said, Why are you sleeping? Get up, and give yourselves to prayer, so that you may not be put to the test. | And he said to them, Why sleep ye? rise up and pray that ye enter not into temptation. | "Why are you sleeping?" He said; "stand up; and pray that you may not come into temptation." |
Luke 22:47 | And while he was saying these words, there came a band of people, and Judas, one of the twelve, was in front of them, and he came near to Jesus to give him a kiss. | As he was yet speaking, behold, a crowd, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went on before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him. | While He was still speaking there came a crowd with Judas, already mentioned as one of the Twelve, at their head. He went up to Jesus to kiss Him. |
Luke 22:48 | But Jesus said to him, Judas, will you be false to the Son of man with a kiss? | And Jesus said to him, Judas, deliverest thou up the Son of man with a kiss? | "Judas," said Jesus, "are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" |
Luke 22:49 | And when those who were with him saw what was coming, they said, Lord, may we not make use of our swords? | And they who were around him, seeing what was going to follow, said [to him], Lord, shall we smite with [the] sword? | Those who were about Him, seeing what was likely to happen, asked Him, "Master, shall we strike with the sword?" |
Luke 22:50 | And one of them gave a blow to the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. | And a certain one from among them smote the bondman of the high priest and took off his right ear. | And one of them struck a blow at the High Priest's servant and cut off his right ear. |
Luke 22:51 | But Jesus, answering, said, Put up with this, at least. And touching his ear, he made it well. | And Jesus answering said, Suffer thus far; and having touched his ear, he healed him. | "Permit me thus far," said Jesus. And He touched the ear and healed it. |
Luke 22:52 | And Jesus said to the chief priests and the captains of the Temple and the rulers, who had come against him, Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and sticks? | And Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple and elders, who were come against him, Have ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks? | Then Jesus said to the High Priests and Commanders of the Temple and Elders, who had come to arrest Him, "Have you come out as if to fight with a robber, with swords and cudgels? |
Luke 22:53 | When I was in the Temple with you every day, your hands were not stretched out against me: but this is your hour, and the authority of the dark power. | When I was day by day with you in the temple ye did not stretch out your hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of darkness. | While day after day I was with you in the Temple, you did not lay hands upon me; but to you belongs this hour and the power of darkness." |
Luke 22:54 | And they made him a prisoner and took him away to the house of the high priest. But Peter went after them at a distance. | And having laid hold on him, they led him [away], and they led [him] into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed afar off. | And they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the High Priest's house, while Peter followed a good way behind. |
Luke 22:55 | And a fire was lighted in the middle of the open square, and they were seated together, and Peter was among them. | And they having lit a fire in the midst of the court and sat down together, Peter sat among them. | And when they had lighted a fire in the middle of the court and had seated themselves in a group round it, Peter was sitting among them, |
Luke 22:56 | And a certain woman-servant, seeing him in the light of the fire, and looking at him with attention, said, This man was with him. | And a certain maid, having seen him sitting by the light, and having fixed her eyes upon him, said, And this [man] was with him. | when a maidservant saw him sitting by the fire, and, looking fixedly at him, she said, "This man also was with him." |
Luke 22:57 | But he said, Woman, it is not true; I have no knowledge of him. | But he denied [him], saying, Woman, I do not know him. | But he denied it, and declared, "Woman, I do not know him." |
Luke 22:58 | And after a little time, another saw him and said, You are one of them; and he said, Man, I am not. | And after a short time another seeing him said, And *thou* art of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not. | Shortly afterwards a man saw him and said, "You, too, are one of them." "No, man, I am not," said Peter. |
Luke 22:59 | And after about an hour, another man said, with decision, Certainly this man was with him, for he is a Galilaean. | And after the lapse of about one hour another stoutly maintained it, saying, In truth this [man] also was with him, for also he is a Galilaean. | After an interval of about an hour some one else stoutly maintained: "Certainly this fellow also was with him, for in fact he is a Galilaean." |
Luke 22:60 | And Peter said, Man, I have no knowledge of these things of which you are talking. And straight away, while he was saying these words, there came the cry of a cock. | And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, [the] cock crew. | "Man, I don't know what you mean," replied Peter. No sooner had he spoken than a cock crowed. |
Luke 22:61 | And the Lord, turning, gave Peter a look. And the words of the Lord came to Peter's mind, how he had said, This night, before the hour of the cock's cry, you will be false to me three times. | And the Lord, turning round, looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. | The Master turned and looked on Peter; and Peter recollected the Master's words, how He had said to him, "This very day, before the cock crows, you will disown me three times." |
Luke 22:62 | And he went out, weeping bitterly. | And Peter, going forth without, wept bitterly. | And he went out and wept aloud bitterly. |
Luke 22:63 | And the men in whose hands Jesus was, made sport of him and gave him blows. | And the men who held him mocked him, beating [him]; | Meanwhile the men who held Jesus in custody repeatedly beat Him in cruel sport, |
Luke 22:64 | And, covering his eyes, they said to him, Are you prophet enough to say who gave you that blow? | and covering him up, asked him saying, Prophesy, who is it that struck thee? | or blindfolded Him, and then challenged Him. "Prove to us," they said, "that you are a prophet, by telling us who it was that struck you." |
Luke 22:65 | And they said a number of other evil things against him. | And they said many other injurious things to him. | And they said many other insulting things to Him. |
Luke 22:66 | And when it was day, the rulers of the people came together, with the chief priests and the scribes, and they took him before their Sanhedrin, saying, | And when it was day, the elderhood of the people, both [the] chief priests and scribes, were gathered together, and led him into their council, saying, | As soon as it was day, the whole body of the Elders, both High Priests and Scribes, assembled. Then He was brought into their Sanhedrin, and they asked Him, |
Luke 22:67 | If you are the Christ, say so. But he said, If I say so you will not have belief; | If *thou* art the Christ, tell us. And he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not at all believe; | "Are you the Christ? Tell us." "If I tell you," He replied, "you will certainly not believe; |
Luke 22:68 | And if I put a question to you, you will not give an answer. | and if I should ask [you], ye would not answer me at all, nor let me go; | and if I ask you questions, you will certainly not answer. |
Luke 22:69 | But in the future the Son of man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God. | but henceforth shall the Son of man be sitting on the right hand of the power of God. | But from this time forward the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of God's omnipotence." |
Luke 22:70 | And they all said, Are you then the Son of God? and he said, You say that I am. | And they all said, *Thou* then art the Son of God? And he said to them, *Ye* say that I am. | Thereupon they cried out with one voice, "You, then, are the Son of God?" "It is as you say," He answered; "I am He." |
Luke 22:71 | And they said, What more need have we of witness? we have the very words of his mouth. | And they said, What need have we any more of witness, for we have heard ourselves out of his mouth? | "What need have we of further evidence?" they said; "for we ourselves have heard it from his own lips." |
