Matthew 26:2 | After two days is the Passover, and the Son of man will be given up to the death of the cross. | Ye know that after two days the passover takes place, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified. | "You know that in two days' time the Passover comes. And the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." |
Matthew 26:3 | Then the chief priests and the rulers of the people came together in the house of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas. | Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together to the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas, | Then the High Priests and Elders of the People assembled in the court of the palace of the High Priest Caiaphas, |
Matthew 26:4 | And they made designs together to take Jesus by some trick, and put him to death. | and took counsel together in order that they might seize Jesus by subtlety and kill him; | and consulted how to get Jesus into their power by stratagem and put Him to death. |
Matthew 26:5 | But they said, Not while the feast is going on, for fear of trouble among the people. | but they said, Not in the feast, that there be not a tumult among the people. | But they said, "Not during the Festival, lest there be a riot among the people." |

Matthew 26:7 | There came to him a woman having a bottle of perfume of great price, and she put the perfume on his head when he was seated at table. | a woman, having an alabaster flask of very precious ointment, came to him and poured it out upon his head as he lay at table. | a woman came to Him with a jar of very costly, sweet-scented ointment, which she poured over His head as He reclined at table. |
Matthew 26:8 | But when the disciples saw it they were angry, saying, To what purpose is this waste? | But the disciples seeing it became indignant, saying, To what end [was] this waste? | "Why such waste?" indignantly exclaimed the disciples; |
Matthew 26:9 | For we might have got much money for this and given it to the poor. | for this might have been sold for much and been given to the poor. | "for this might have been sold for a considerable sum, and the money given to the poor." |
Matthew 26:10 | But Jesus, seeing it, said to them, Why are you troubling the woman? she has done a kind act to me. | But Jesus knowing [it] said to them, Why do ye trouble the woman? for she has wrought a good work toward me. | But Jesus heard it, and said to them, "Why are you vexing her? For she has done a most gracious act towards me. |
Matthew 26:11 | For the poor you have ever with you, but me you have not for ever. | For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always. | The poor you always have with you, but me you have not always. |
Matthew 26:12 | For in putting this perfume on my body, she did it to make me ready for my last resting-place. | For in pouring out this ointment on my body, she has done it for my burying. | In pouring this ointment over me, her object was to prepare me for burial. |
Matthew 26:13 | Truly I say to you, Wherever this good news goes out in all the world, what this woman has done will be talked of in memory of her. | Verily I say to you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, that also which this [woman] has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. | In solemn truth I tell you that wherever in the whole world this Good News shall be proclaimed, this deed of hers shall be spoken of in memory of her." |
Matthew 26:14 | Then one of the twelve, who was named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, | Then one of the twelve, he who was called Judas Iscariote, went to the chief priests | At that time one of the Twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the High Priests |
Matthew 26:15 | What will you give me, if I give him up to you? And the price was fixed at thirty bits of silver. | and said, What are ye willing to give me, and *I* will deliver him up to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver. | and said, "What are you willing to give me if I betray him to you?" So they weighed out to him thirty shekels, |
Matthew 26:16 | And from that time he was watching for a chance to give him into their hands. | And from that time he sought a good opportunity that he might deliver him up. | and from that moment he was on the look out for an opportunity to betray Him. |
Matthew 26:17 | Now on the first day of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where are we to make ready for you to take the Passover meal? | Now on the first [day] of [the feast of] unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? | On the first day of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus with the question, "Where shall we make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" |
Matthew 26:18 | And he said to them, Go into the town to such a man, and say to him, The Master says, My time is near: I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. | And he said, Go into the city unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near, I will keep the passover in thy house with my disciples. | "Go into the city," He replied, "to a certain man, and tell him, `The Teacher says, My time is close at hand. It is at your house that I shall keep the Passover with my disciples.'" |
Matthew 26:19 | And the disciples did as Jesus had said to them; and they made ready the Passover. | And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover. | The disciples did as Jesus directed them, and got the Passover ready. |
Matthew 26:20 | Now when evening was come, he was seated at table with the twelve disciples; | And when the evening was come he lay down at table with the twelve. | When evening came, He was at table with the twelve disciples, |
Matthew 26:21 | And while they were taking food, he said, Truly I say to you that one of you will be false to me. | And as they were eating he said, Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up. | and the meal was proceeding, when Jesus said, "In solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me." |
Matthew 26:22 | And they were very said, and said to him, one by one, Is it I, Lord? | And being exceedingly grieved they began to say to him, each of them, Is it *I*, Lord? | Intensely grieved they began one after another to ask Him, "Can it be I, Master?" |
Matthew 26:23 | And he made answer and said, He who puts his hand into the plate with me, the same will be false to me. | But he answering said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, *he* it is who shall deliver me up. | "The one who has dipped his fingers in the bowl with me," He answered, "is the man who will betray me. |
Matthew 26:24 | The Son of man goes, even as the Writings say of him: but a curse is on that man through whom the Son of man is given up; it would have been well for that man if he had never come into the world. | The Son of man goes indeed, according as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born. | The Son of Man is indeed going as is written concerning Him; but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It had been a happy thing for that man if he had never been born." |
Matthew 26:25 | And Judas, who was false to him, made answer and said, Is it I, Master? He says to him, Yes. | And Judas, who delivered him up, answering said, Is it *I*, Rabbi? He says to him, *Thou* hast said. | Then Judas, the disciple who was betraying Him, asked, "Can it be I, Rabbi?" "It is you," He replied. |
Matthew 26:26 | And when they were taking food, Jesus took bread and, after blessing it, he gave the broken bread to the disciples and said, Take it; this is my body. | And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken [the] bread and blessed, broke [it] and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. | During the meal Jesus took a Passover biscuit, blessed it and broke it. He then gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it: it is my body." |
Matthew 26:27 | And he took a cup and, having given praise, he gave it to them, saying, | And having taken [the] cup and given thanks, he gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it. | And He took the cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, "Drink from it, all of you; |
Matthew 26:28 | Take of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the testament, which is given for men for the forgiveness of sins. | For this is my blood, that of the [new] covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins. | for this is my blood which is to be poured out for many for the remission of sins the blood which ratifies the Covenant. |
Matthew 26:29 | But I say to you that from now I will not take of this fruit of the vine, till that day when I take it new with you in my Father's kingdom. | But I say to you, that I will not at all drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father. | I tell you that I will never again take the produce of the vine till that day when I shall drink the new wine with you in my Father's Kingdom." |
Matthew 26:30 | And after a song of praise to God, they went out to the Mountain of Olives. | And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives. | So they sang the hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. |
Matthew 26:31 | Then said Jesus to them, All of you will be turned away from me this night: for it is said in the Writings, I will put to death the keeper of the sheep, and the sheep of the flock will be put to flight. | Then saith Jesus to them, All *ye* shall be offended in me during this night. For it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. | Then said Jesus, "This night all of you will stumble and fail in your fidelity to me; for it is written, `I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered in all directions.' |
Matthew 26:32 | But after I am come back from the dead, I will go before you into Galilee. | But after that I shall be risen, I will go before you to Galilee. | But after I have risen to life again I will go before you into Galilee." |
Matthew 26:33 | But Peter made answer and said to him, Though all may be turned away from you, I will never be turned away. | And Peter answering said to him, If all shall be offended in thee, *I* will never be offended. | "All may stumble and fail," said Peter, "but I never will." |
Matthew 26:34 | Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you that this night, before the hour of the cock's cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. | Jesus said to him, Verily I say to thee, that during this night, before [the] cock shall crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. | "In solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that this very night, before the cock crows, you will three times disown me." |
Matthew 26:35 | Peter says to him, Even if I am put to death with you, I will not be false to you. So said all the disciples. | Peter says to him, If I should needs die with thee, I will in no wise deny thee. Likewise said all the disciples also. | "Even if I must die with you," declared Peter, "I will never disown you." In like manner protested all the disciples. |
Matthew 26:36 | Then comes Jesus with them to a place named Gethsemane, and says to his disciples, Be seated here, while I go over there for prayer. | Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and says to the disciples, Sit here until I go away and pray yonder. | Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane. And He said to the disciples, "Sit down here, whilst I go yonder and there pray." |
Matthew 26:37 | And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and became sad and very troubled. | And taking with [him] Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and deeply depressed. | And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zabdi. Then He began to be full of anguish and distress, |
Matthew 26:38 | Then says he to them, My soul is very sad, even to death: keep watch with me here. | Then he says to them, My soul is very sorrowful even unto death; remain here and watch with me. | and He said to them, "My soul is crushed with anguish to the very point of death; wait here, and keep awake with me." |
Matthew 26:39 | And he went forward a little, and falling down on his face in prayer, he said, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup go from me; but let not my pleasure, but yours be done. | And going forward a little he fell upon his face, praying and saying, My Father, if it be possible let this cup pass from me; but not as *I* will, but as *thou* [wilt]. | Going forward a short distance He fell on His face and prayed. "My Father," He said, "if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou willest." |
Matthew 26:40 | And he comes to the disciples, and sees that they are sleeping, and says to Peter, What, were you not able to keep watch with me one hour? | And he comes to the disciples and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter, Thus ye have not been able to watch one hour with me? | Then He came to the disciples and found them asleep, and He said to Peter, "Alas, none of you could keep awake with me for even a single hour! |
Matthew 26:41 | Keep watch with prayer, so that you may not be put to the test: the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is feeble. | Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed [is] ready, but the flesh weak. | Keep awake, and pray that you may not enter into temptation: the spirit is right willing, but the body is frail." |
Matthew 26:42 | Again, a second time he went away, and said in prayer, O my Father, if this may not go from me without my taking it, let your pleasure be done. | Again going away a second time he prayed saying, My Father, if this cannot pass [from me] unless I drink it, thy will be done. | Again a second time He went away and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is impossible for this cup to pass without my drinking it, Thy will be done." |
Matthew 26:43 | And he came again and saw them sleeping, for their eyes were tired. | And coming he found them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. | He came and again found them asleep, for they were very tired. |
Matthew 26:44 | And he went away from them again, and a third time said the same prayer. | And leaving them, he went away again and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. | So He left them, and went away once more and prayed a third time, again using the same words. |
Matthew 26:45 | Then he comes to the disciples; and says to them, Go on sleeping now, and take your rest: for the hour is come, and the Son of man is given into the hands of evil men. | Then he comes to the disciples and says to them, Sleep on now and take your rest; behold, the hour has drawn nigh, and the Son of man is delivered up into the hands of sinners. | Then He came to the disciples and said, "Sleep on and rest. See, the moment is close at hand when the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinful men. |
Matthew 26:46 | Up, let us be going: see, he who gives me up is near. | Arise, let us go; behold, he that delivers me up has drawn nigh. | Rouse yourselves. Let us be going. My betrayer is close at hand." |
Matthew 26:47 | And while he was still talking, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a band armed with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and those in authority over the people. | And while he was yet speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great crowd with swords and sticks from the chief priests and elders of the people. | He had scarcely finished speaking when Judas came one of the Twelve accompanied by a great crowd of men armed with swords and bludgeons, sent by the High Priests and Elders of the People. |
Matthew 26:48 | Now the false one had given them a sign saying, The one to whom I give a kiss, that is he: take him. | Now he that delivered him up had given them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, he it is: seize him. | Now the betrayer had agreed upon a sign with them, to direct them. He had said, "The one whom I kiss is the man: lay hold of him." |
Matthew 26:49 | And straight away he came to Jesus and said, Master! and gave him a kiss. | And immediately coming up to Jesus he said, Hail, Rabbi, and covered him with kisses. | So he went straight to Jesus and said, "Peace to you, Rabbi!" And he kissed Him eagerly. |
Matthew 26:50 | And Jesus said to him, Friend, do that for which you have come. Then they came and put hands on Jesus, and took him. | But Jesus said to him, [My] friend, for what purpose art thou come? Then coming up they laid hands upon Jesus and seized him. | "Friend," said Jesus, "carry out your intention." Then they came and laid their hands on Jesus and seized Him firmly. |
Matthew 26:51 | And one of those who were with Jesus put out his hand, and took out his sword and gave the servant of the high priest a blow, cutting off his ear. | And behold, one of those with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and smiting the bondman of the high priest took off his ear. | But one of those with Jesus drew his sword and struck the High Priest's servant, cutting off his ear. |
Matthew 26:52 | Then says Jesus to him, Put up your sword again into its place: for all those who take the sword will come to death by the sword. | Then saith Jesus to him, Return thy sword to its place; for all who take the sword shall perish by the sword. | "Put back your sword again," said Jesus, "for all who draw the sword shall perish by the sword. |
Matthew 26:53 | Does it not seem possible to you that if I make request to my Father he will even now send me an army of angels? | Or thinkest thou that I cannot now call upon my Father, and he will furnish me more than twelve legions of angels? | Or do you suppose I cannot entreat my Father and He would instantly send to my help more than twelve legions of angels? |
Matthew 26:54 | But how then would the Writings come true, which say that so it has to be? | How then should the scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be? | In that case how are the Scriptures to be fulfilled which declare that thus it must be?" |
Matthew 26:55 | In that hour Jesus said to the people, Have you come out as against a thief with swords and sticks to take me? I was teaching every day in the Temple and you took me not. | In that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Are ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks to take me? I sat daily [with you] teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me. | Then said Jesus to the crowds, "Have you come out as if to fight with a robber, with swords and bludgeons to apprehend me? Day after day I have been sitting teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. |
Matthew 26:56 | But all this has taken place so that the writings of the prophets might come true. Then all his disciples went from him in flight. | But all this is come to pass that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled. | But all this has taken place in order that the writings of the Prophets may be fulfilled." At this point the disciples all left Him and fled. |
Matthew 26:57 | And those who had made Jesus prisoner took him away to the house of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and those in authority over the people had come together. | Now they that had seized Jesus led [him] away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. | But the officers who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the High Priest, at whose house the Scribes and the Elders had assembled. |
Matthew 26:58 | But Peter went after him at a distance, to the house of the high priest, and went in and took his seat with the servants, to see the end. | And Peter followed him at a distance, even to the palace of the high priest, and entering in sat with the officers to see the end. | And Peter kept following Him at a distance, till he came even to the court of the High Priest's palace, where he entered and sat down among the officers to see the issue. |

Matthew 26:61 | But later there came two who said, This man said, I am able to give the Temple of God to destruction, and to put it up again in three days. | and said, *He* said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and in three days build it. | who testified, "This man said, `I am able to pull down the Sanctuary of God and three days afterwards to build a new one.'" |
Matthew 26:62 | And the high priest got up and said to him, Have you no answer? what is it which these say against you? | And the high priest standing up said to him, Answerest thou nothing? What do these witness against thee? | Then the High Priest stood up and asked Him, "Have you no answer to make? What is it these men are saying in evidence against you?" |
Matthew 26:63 | But Jesus said not a word. And the high priest said to him, I put you on oath, by the living God, that you will say to us if you are the Christ, the Son of God. | But Jesus was silent. And the high priest answering said to him, I adjure thee by the living God that thou tell us if *thou* art the Christ the Son of God. | Jesus however remained silent. Again the High Priest addressed Him. "In the name of the ever-living God," he said, "I now put you on your oath. Tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God." |
Matthew 26:64 | Jesus says to him, You say so: but I say to you, From now you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. | Jesus says to him, *Thou* hast said. Moreover, I say to you, From henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. | "I am He," replied Jesus. "But I tell you that, later on, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Omnipotence, and coming on the clouds of the sky." |
Matthew 26:65 | Then the high priest, violently parting his robes, said, He has said evil against God: what more need have we of witnesses? for now his words against God have come to your ears: | Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has blasphemed: what need have we any more of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy. | Then the High Priest tore his robes and exclaimed, "Impious language! What further need have we of witnesses! See, you have now heard the impiety. |
Matthew 26:66 | What is your opinion? They made answer and said, It is right for him to be put to death. | What think ye? And they answering said, He is liable to the penalty of death. | What is your verdict?" "He deserves to die," they replied. |
Matthew 26:67 | Then they put shame on him, and were cruel to him: and some gave him blows, saying, | Then they spit in his face, and buffeted him, and some struck him with the palms of their hand, | Then they spat in His face, and struck Him some with the fist, some with the open hand |
Matthew 26:68 | Be a prophet, O Christ, and say who gave you a blow! | saying, Prophesy to us, Christ, Who is it who struck thee? | while they taunted Him, saying, "Christ, prove yourself a Prophet by telling us who it was that struck you." |
Matthew 26:69 | Now Peter was seated in the open square outside the house: and a servant-girl came to him, saying, You were with Jesus the Galilaean. | But Peter sat without in the palace-court; and a maid came to him, saying, And *thou* wast with Jesus the Galilaean. | Peter meanwhile was sitting outside in the court of the palace, when one of the maidservants came over to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilaean." |
Matthew 26:70 | But he said before them all that it was false, saying, I have no knowledge of what you say. | But he denied before all, saying, I do not know what thou sayest. | He denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean." |
Matthew 26:71 | And when he had gone out into the doorway, another saw him and says to those who were there, This man was with Jesus the Nazarene. | And when he had gone out into the entrance, another [maid] saw him, and says to those there, This [man] also was with Jesus the Nazaraean. | Soon afterwards he went out and stood in the gateway, when another girl saw him, and said, addressing the people there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazarene." |
Matthew 26:72 | And again he said with an oath, I have no knowledge of the man. | And again he denied with an oath: I do not know the man. | Again he denied it with an oath. "I do not know the man," he said. |
Matthew 26:73 | And after a little time those who were near came and said to Peter, Truly you are one of them; because your talk is witness against you. | And after a little, those who stood [there], coming to [him], said to Peter, Truly *thou* too art of them, for also thy speech makes thee manifest. | A short time afterwards the people standing there came and said to Peter, "Certainly you too are one of them, for your brogue shows it." |
Matthew 26:74 | Then with curses and oaths he said, I have no knowledge of the man. And straight away there came the cry of a cock. | Then he began to curse and to swear, I know not the man. And immediately [the] cock crew. | Then with curses and oaths he declared, "I do not know the man." Immediately a cock crowed, |
Matthew 26:75 | And the word of Jesus came back to Peter, when he said, Before the hour of the cock's cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. And he went out, weeping bitterly. | And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who had said [to him], Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went forth without, and wept bitterly. | and Peter recollected the words of Jesus, how He had said, "Before the cock crows you will three times disown me." And he went out and wept aloud, bitterly. |
