| Matthew 3:1 | And in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the waste land of Judaea, | Now in those days comes John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, | About this time John the Baptist made his appearance, preaching in the Desert of Judaea. |
| Matthew 3:2 | Saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin; for the kingdom of heaven is near. | and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh. | "Repent," he said, "for the Kingdom of the Heavens is now close at hand." |
| Matthew 3:3 | For this is he of whom Isaiah the prophet said, The voice of one crying in the waste land, Make ready the way of the Lord, make his roads straight. | For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths. | He it is who was spoken of through the Prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying aloud, `In the desert prepare ye a road for the Lord: make His highway straight.'" |
| Matthew 3:4 | Now John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather band about him; and his food was locusts and honey. | And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey. | This man John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a loincloth of leather; and he lived upon locusts and wild honey. |

| Matthew 3:8 | Let your change of heart be seen in your works: | Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance. | Therefore let your lives prove your change of heart; |
| Matthew 3:9 | And say not to yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; because I say to you that God is able from these stones to make children for Abraham. | And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. | and do not imagine that you can say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our forefather,' for I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones. |
| Matthew 3:10 | And even now the axe is put to the root of the trees; every tree then which does not give good fruit is cut down, and put into the fire. | And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. | And already the axe is lying at the root of the trees, so that every tree which does not produce good fruit will quickly be hewn down and thrown into the fire. |
| Matthew 3:11 | Truly, I give baptism with water to those of you whose hearts are changed; but he who comes after me is greater than I, whose shoes I am not good enough to take up: he will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit and with fire: | *I* indeed baptise you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire; | I indeed am baptizing you in water on a profession of repentance; but He who is coming after me is mightier than I: His sandals I am not worthy to carry for a moment; He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire. |
| Matthew 3:12 | In whose hand is the instrument with which he will make clean his grain; he will put the good grain in his store, but the waste will be burned up in the fire which will never be put out. | whose winnowing fan [is] in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. | His winnowing-shovel is in His hand, and He will make a thorough clearance of His threshing-floor, gathering His wheat into the storehouse, but burning up the chaff in unquenchable fire." |
| Matthew 3:13 | Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be given baptism by him. | Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptised of him; | Just at that time Jesus, coming from Galilee to the Jordan, presents Himself to John to be baptized by him. |
| Matthew 3:14 | But John would have kept him back, saying, It is I who have need of baptism from you, and do you come to me? | but John urgently forbad him, saying, *I* have need to be baptised of thee; and comest *thou* to me? | John protested. "It is I," he said, "who have need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" |
| Matthew 3:15 | But Jesus made answer, saying to him, Let it be so now: because so it is right for us to make righteousness complete. Then he gave him baptism. | But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer [it] now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him. | "Let it be so on this occasion," Jesus replied; "for so we ought to fulfil every religious duty." Then he consented; |
| Matthew 3:16 | And Jesus, having been given baptism, straight away went up from the water; and, the heavens opening, he saw the Spirit of God coming down on him as a dove; | And Jesus, having been baptised, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him: | and Jesus was baptized, and immediately went up from the water. At that moment the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him, |
