Luke 20:1And it came about on one of those days, when he was teaching the people in the Temple and preaching the good news,And it came to pass, that on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, with the ancients, met together,And it came to pass on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and announcing the glad tidings, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up,
Luke 20:2That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority.And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority dost thou these things? or, Who is he that hath given thee this authority?and spoke to him saying, Tell us by what authority thou doest these things, or who is it who has given thee this authority?
Luke 20:3And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer:And Jesus answering, said to them: I will also ask you one thing. Answer me:And he answering said to them, *I* also will ask you [one] thing, and tell me:
Luke 20:4The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men?
Luke 20:5And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him?But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe him?And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him?
Luke 20:6But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet.But if we say, Of men, the whole people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.but if we should say, Of men, the whole people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.
Luke 20:7And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from.And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.And they answered, they did not know whence.
Luke 20:8And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things.And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things.And Jesus said to them, Neither do *I* tell you by what authority I do these things.
Luke 20:9And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time.And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time.And he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country for a long time.
Luke 20:10And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing.And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty.And in the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman, that they might give to him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen, having beaten him, sent [him] away empty.
Luke 20:11And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing.And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty.And again he sent another bondman; but they, having beaten him also, and cast insult upon him, sent [him] away empty.
Luke 20:12And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out.And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast [him] out.
Luke 20:13And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him.Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect [him].
Luke 20:14But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours.Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; [come,] let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.
Luke 20:15And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen?So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed [him]. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them?
Luke 20:16He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so.He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be!
Luke 20:17But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building?But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone?
Luke 20:18Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.
Luke 20:19And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them.And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them.
Luke 20:20And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler.And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.And having watched [him], they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in [his] language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.
Luke 20:21And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:And they asked him, saying: Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly: and thou dost not respect any person, but teachest the way of God in truth.And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no [man's] person, but teachest with truth the way of God:
Luke 20:22Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not?Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no?Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
Luke 20:23But he saw through their trick and said to them,But he considering their guile, said to them: Why tempt you me?But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me?
Luke 20:24Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's.Shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answering, said to him, Caesar's.Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's.
Luke 20:25And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's.And he said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's: and to God the things that are God's.And he said to them, Pay therefore what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God.
Luke 20:26And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing.And they could not reprehend his word before the people: and wondering at his answer, they held their peace.And they were not able to take hold of him in [his] expressions before the people, and, wondering at his answer, they were silent.
Luke 20:27And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him,And there came to him some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, and they asked him,And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, coming up [to him],
Luke 20:28Master, Moses said that if a man's brother comes to his end, having a wife, but no children, his brother is to take the wife, and get a family for his brother.Saying: Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he leave no children, that his brother should take her to wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.demanded of him saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother, who has a wife, die, and he die childless, his brother shall take the wife and raise up seed to his brother.
Luke 20:29Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children;There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.There were then seven brethren: and the first, having taken a wife, died childless;
Luke 20:30And the second;And the next took her to wife, and he also died childless.and the second [took the woman, and *he* died childless];
Luke 20:31And the third took her; and in the same way, all the seven, without having any children, came to their end.And the third took her. And in like manner all the seven, and they left no children, and died.and the third took her: and in like manner also the seven left no children and died;
Luke 20:32And last of all, the woman came to her end.Last of all the woman died also.and last of all the woman also died.
Luke 20:33When they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for all the seven had her.In the resurrection therefore, whose wife of them shall she be? For all the seven had her to wife.In the resurrection therefore of which of them does she become wife, for the seven had her as wife?
Luke 20:34And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives;And Jesus said to them: The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world marry and are given in marriage,
Luke 20:35But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married;But they that shall be accounted worthy of that world, and of the resurrection from the dead, shall neither be married, nor take wives.but they who are counted worthy to have part in that world, and the resurrection from among [the] dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;
Luke 20:36And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead.Neither can they die any more: for they are equal to the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.for neither can they die any more, for they are equal to angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Luke 20:37But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.Now that the dead rise again, Moses also shewed, at the bush, when he called the Lord, The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;But that the dead rise, even Moses shewed in [the section of] the bush, when he called [the] Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob;
Luke 20:38Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him.For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live to him.but he is not God of [the] dead but of [the] living; for all live for him.
Luke 20:39And some of the scribes, in answer to this, said, Master, you have said well.And some of the scribes answering, said to him: Master, thou hast said well.And some of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well spoken.
Luke 20:40And they had fear of putting any more questions to him.And after that they durst not ask him any more questions.For they did not dare any more to ask him anything.
Luke 20:41And he said to them, Why do they say that the Christ is the son of David?But he said to them: How say they that Christ is the son of David?And he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is David's son,
Luke 20:42For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand,And David himself saith in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand,and David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand
Luke 20:43Till I put under your feet all those who are against you.Till I make thy enemies thy footstool.until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet?
Luke 20:44David then gives him the name of Lord, so how is it possible for him to be his son?David then calleth him Lord: and how is he his son?David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son?
Luke 20:45And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples,And in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples:And, as all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,
Luke 20:46Keep away from the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes, and to have words of respect said to them in the market-places, and to take the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts;Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplace, and the first chairs in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts:Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and who love salutations in the market-places, and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;
Luke 20:47Who take the property of widows and before the eyes of men make long prayers; they will get a greater punishment.Who devour the houses of widows, feigning long prayer. These shall receive greater damnation.who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment.
