Mark 8:1In those days again, when there was a great mass of people and they had no food, he made his disciples come to him and said to them,In those days again, when there was a great multitude, and had nothing to eat; calling his disciples together, he saith to them:About that time there was again an immense crowd, and they found themselves with nothing to eat. So He called His disciples to Him.
Mark 8:2I have pity for these people because they have been with me now three days, and have no food;I have compassion on the multitude, for behold they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat."My heart yearns over the people," He said; "for this is now the third day they have remained with me, and they have nothing to eat.
Mark 8:3If I send them away to their houses with no food, they will be overcome by weariness on the way; and some of them have come from far.And if I shall send them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way; for some of them came from afar off.If I were to send them home hungry, they would faint on the way, some of them having come a great distance."
Mark 8:4And his disciples said in answer, How will it be possible to get enough bread for these men here in a waste place? And his disciples answered him: From whence can any one fill them here with bread in the wilderness?"Where can we possibly get bread here in this remote place to satisfy such a crowd?" answered His disciples.
Mark 8:5And he put the question, How much bread have you? And they said, Seven cakes. And he asked them: How many loaves have ye? Who said: Seven."How many loaves have you?" He asked. "Seven," they said.
Mark 8:6And he made the people be seated on the earth: and he took the seven cakes and, having given praise, he gave the broken bread to his disciples to put before them; and they put it before the people. And taking the seven loaves, giving thanks, he broke, and gave to his disciples for to set before them; and they set them before the people. So He passed the word to the people to sit down on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves He blessed them, and broke them into portions and proceeded to give them to His disciples for them to distribute, and they distributed them to the people.
Mark 8:7And they had some small fishes; and blessing them he had them put before the people in the same way.And they had a few little fishes; and he blessed them, and commanded them to be set before them. They had also a few small fish. He blessed them, and He told His disciples to distribute these also.
Mark 8:8And they took the food, and had enough; and they took up seven baskets full of the broken bits. And they did eat and were filled; and they took up that which was left of the fragments, seven baskets. So the people ate an abundant meal; and what remained over they picked up and carried away seven hampers of broken pieces.
Mark 8:9And there were about four thousand people: and he sent them away. And they that had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them away. The number fed were about 4,000. Then He sent them away,
Mark 8:10And he got into the boat with his disciples straight away, and came into the country of Dalmanutha. And immediately going up into a ship with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha.and at once going on board with His disciples He came into the district of Dalmanutha.
Mark 8:11And the Pharisees came out and put questions to him, requesting from him a sign from heaven, testing him.And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, asking him a sign from heaven, tempting him.The Pharisees followed Him and began to dispute with Him, asking Him for a sign in the sky, to make trial of Him.
Mark 8:12And he was very sad in spirit, and said, Why is this generation looking for a sign? truly, I say to you, No sign will be given to this generation. And sighing deeply in spirit, he saith: Why doth this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, a sign shall not be given to this generation.Heaving a deep and troubled sigh, He said, "Why do the men of to-day ask for a sign? In solemn truth I tell you that no sign will be given to the men of to-day."
Mark 8:13And he went away from them, and again got into the boat and went across to the other side. And leaving them, he went up again into the ship, and passed to the other side of the water. So He left them, went on board again, and came away to the other side.
Mark 8:14And they had taken no thought to get bread; and they had only one cake of bread with them in the boat.And they forgot to take bread; and they had but one loaf with them in the ship.Now they had forgotten to take bread, nor had they more than a single loaf with them in the boat;
Mark 8:15And he said to them, Take care to be on the watch against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod. And he charged them, saying: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.and when He admonished them, "See to it, be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod,"
Mark 8:16And they said to one another, We have no bread. And they reasoned among themselves, saying: Because we have no bread.they explained His words to one another by saying, "We have no bread!"
Mark 8:17And Jesus, hearing it, said to them, Why are you reasoning among yourselves because you have no bread? do you still not see, and is it still not clear to you? are your hearts so hard?Which Jesus knowing, saith to them: Why do you reason, because you have no bread? do you not yet know nor understand? have you still your heart blinded? He perceived what they were saying, and He said to them, "What is this discussion of yours about having no bread? Do you not yet see and understand? Are your minds so dull of comprehension?
Mark 8:18Having eyes, do you not see? and having ears, have you no hearing? and have you no memory?Having eyes, see you not? and having ears, hear you not? neither do you remember. You have eyes! can you not see? You have ears! can you not hear? and have you no memory?
Mark 8:19When I made a division of the five cakes of bread among the five thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? They said to him, Twelve. When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took you up? They say to him, Twelve. When I broke up the five loaves for the 5,000 men, how many baskets did you carry away full of broken portions?" "Twelve," they said.
Mark 8:20And when the seven among the four thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? And they said to him, Seven. When also the seven loaves among four thousand, how many baskets of fragments took you up? And they say to him, Seven."And when the seven for the 4,000, how many hampers full of portions did you take away?" "Seven," they answered.
Mark 8:21And he said to them, Is it still not clear to you?And he said to them: How do you not yet understand?"Do you not yet understand?" He said.
Mark 8:22And they came to Beth-saida. And they took a blind man to him, requesting him to put his hands on him.And they came to Bethsaida; and they bring to him a blind man, and they besought him that he would touch him.And they came to Bethsaida. And a blind man was brought to Jesus and they entreated Him to touch him.
Mark 8:23And he took the blind man by the hand, and went with him out of the town; and when he had put water from his mouth on his eyes, and put his hands on him, he said, Do you see anything? And taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of the town; and spitting upon his eyes, laying his hands on him, he asked him if he saw any thing. So He took the blind man by the arm and brought him out of the village, and spitting into his eyes He put His hands on him and asked him, "Can you see anything?"
Mark 8:24And looking up, he said, I see men; I see them like trees, walking. And looking up, he said: I see men as it were trees, walking. He looked up and said, "I can see the people: I see them like trees only walking."
Mark 8:25Then again he put his hands on his eyes; and looking hard, he was able to see, and saw all things clearly. After that again he laid his hands upon his eyes, and he began to see, and was restored, so that he saw all things clearly. Then for the second time He put His hands on the man's eyes, and the man, looking steadily, recovered his sight and saw everything distinctly.
Mark 8:26And he sent him away to his house, saying, Do not even go into the town. And he sent him into his house, saying: Go into thy house, and if thou enter into the town, tell nobody. So He sent him home, and added, "Do not even go into the village."
Mark 8:27And Jesus went out, with his disciples, into the little towns round Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he put a question to his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I am?And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. And in the way, he asked his disciples, saying to them: Whom do men say that I am?From that place Jesus and His disciples went to the villages belonging to Caesarea Philippi. On the way He began to ask His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"
Mark 8:28And they made answer, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, One of the prophets.Who answered him, saying: John the Baptist; but some Elias, and others as one of the prophets."John the Baptist," they replied, "but others say Elijah, and others, that it is one of the Prophets."
Mark 8:29And he said to them, But who do you say I am? Peter said in answer, You are the Christ. Then he saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? Peter answering said to him: Thou art the Christ. Then He asked them pointedly, "But you yourselves, who do you say that I am?" "You are the Christ," answered Peter.
Mark 8:30And he put them under orders not to say this of him to anyone. And he strictly charged them that they should not tell any man of him.And He strictly forbad them to tell this about Him to any one.
Mark 8:31And teaching them, he said that the Son of man would have to undergo much, and be hated by those in authority, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be put to death, and after three days come back from the dead. And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the ancients and by the high priests, and the scribes, and be killed: and after three days rise again. And now for the first time He told them, "The Son of Man must endure much suffering, and be rejected by the Elders and the High Priests and the Scribes, and be put to death, and after two days rise to life."
Mark 8:32And he said this openly. And Peter took him, and was protesting. And he spoke the word openly. And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him. This He told them plainly; whereupon Peter took Him and began to remonstrate with Him.
Mark 8:33But he, turning about, and seeing his disciples, said sharply to Peter, Get out of my way, Satan: for your mind is not on the things of God, but on the things of men.Who turning about and seeing his disciples, threatened Peter, saying: Go behind me, Satan, because thou savorest not the things that are of God, but that are of men.But turning round and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Adversary," He said, "for your thoughts are not God's thoughts, but men's."
Mark 8:34And turning to the mass of people with his disciples, he said to them, If any man has the desire to come after me, let him give up all other desires, and take up his cross and come after me.And calling the multitude together with his disciples, he said to them: If any man will follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.Then calling to Him the crowd and also His disciples, He said to them, "If any one is desirous of following me, let him ignore self and take up his cross, and so be my follower.
Mark 8:35Whoever has a desire to keep his life, will have it taken from him; and whoever gives up his life because of me and the good news, will keep it.For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel, shall save it.For whoever is bent on securing his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News, will secure it.
Mark 8:36What profit has a man if he gets all the world with the loss of his life? For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul? Why, what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
Mark 8:37And what would a man give in exchange for his life?Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For what could a man give to buy back his life?
Mark 8:38Whoever has a feeling of shame because of me and my words in this false and evil generation, the Son of man will have a feeling of shame because of him, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. For he that shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation: the Son of man also will be ashamed of him, when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.Every one, however, who has been ashamed of me and of my teachings in this faithless and sinful age, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in His Father's glory with the holy angels."
