Matthew 13:1 | On that day Jesus went out of the house and was seated by the seaside. | The same day Jesus going out of the house, sat by the sea side. | That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake, |
Matthew 13:2 | And great numbers of people came together to him, so that he got into a boat; and the people took up their position by the sea. | And great multitudes were gathered unto him, so that he went up into a boat and sat: and all the multitude stood on the shore. | when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore. |
Matthew 13:3 | And he gave them teaching in the form of a story, saying, A man went out to put seed in the earth; | And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying: Behold the sower went forth to sow. | He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow. |
Matthew 13:4 | And while he did so, some seeds were dropped by the wayside, and the birds came and took them for food: | And whilst he soweth some fell by the way side, and the birds of the air came and ate them up. | As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up. |
Matthew 13:5 | And some of the seed went among the stones, where it had not much earth, and straight away it came up because the earth was not deep: | And other some fell upon stony ground, where they had not much earth: and they sprung up immediately, because they had no deepness of earth. | Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth; |
Matthew 13:6 | And when the sun was high, it was burned; and because it had no root it became dry and dead. | And when the sun was up they were scorched: and because they had not root, they withered away. | but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up. |
Matthew 13:7 | And some seeds went among thorns, and the thorns came up and they had no room for growth: | And others fell among thorns: and the thorns grew up and choked them. | Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it. |
Matthew 13:8 | And some, falling on good earth, gave fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | And others fell upon good ground: and they brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold. | But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty. |
Matthew 13:9 | He who has ears, let him give ear. | He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. | Listen, every one who has ears!" |
Matthew 13:10 | And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you say things to them in the form of stories? | And his disciples came and said to him: Why speakest thou to them in parables? | (And His disciples came and asked Him, "Why do you speak to them in figurative language?" |
Matthew 13:11 | And he said to them in answer, To you is given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. | Who answered and said to them: Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven: but to them it is not given. | "Because," He replied, "while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not. |
Matthew 13:12 | Because whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have more; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. | For he that hath, to him shall be given, and he shall abound: but he that hath not, from him shall be taken away that also which he hath. | For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away. |
Matthew 13:13 | For this reason I put things into the form of stories; because they see without seeing, and give ear without hearing, and the sense is not clear to them. | Therefore do I speak to them in parables: because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. | I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand. |
Matthew 13:14 | And for them the words of Isaiah have come true, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you: | And the prophecy of Isaias is fulfilled in them, who saith: By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand: and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive. | And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: "`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see. |
Matthew 13:15 | For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well. | For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears they have been dull of hearing, and their eyes they have shut: lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. | For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.' |
Matthew 13:16 | But a blessing be on your eyes, because they see; and on your ears, because they are open. | But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. | "But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. |
Matthew 13:17 | For truly, I say to you that prophets and upright men had a desire to see the things which you see, and saw them not; and to have knowledge of the words which have come to your ears, and they had it not. | For, amen, I say to you, many prophets and just men have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the things that you hear and have not heard them. | For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them. |
Matthew 13:18 | Give ear, then, to the story of the man who put the seed in the earth. | Hear you therefore the parable of the sower. | "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower. |
Matthew 13:19 | When the word of the kingdom comes to anyone, and the sense of it is not clear to him, then the Evil One comes, and quickly takes away that which was put in his heart. He is the seed dropped by the wayside. | When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, there cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart: this is he that received the seed by the way side. | When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side. |
Matthew 13:20 | And that which went on the stones, this is he who, hearing the word, straight away takes it with joy; | And he that received the seed upon stony ground, is he that heareth the word, and immediately receiveth it with joy. | He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy. |
Matthew 13:21 | But having no root in himself, he goes on for a time; and when trouble comes or pain, because of the word, he quickly becomes full of doubts. | Yet hath he not root in himself, but is only for a time: and when there ariseth tribulation and persecution because of the word, he is presently scandalized. | It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls. |
Matthew 13:22 | And that which was dropped among the thorns, this is he who has the word; and the cares of this life, and the deceits of wealth, put a stop to the growth of the word and it gives no fruit. | And he that received the seed among thorns, is he that heareth the word, and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choketh up the word, and he becometh fruitless. | He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful. |
Matthew 13:23 | And the seed which was put in good earth, this is he who gives ear to the word, and gets the sense of it; who gives fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But he that received the seed upon good ground, is he that heareth the word, and understandeth, and beareth fruit, and yieldeth the one an hundredfold, and another sixty, and another thirty. | But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.") |
Matthew 13:24 | And he gave them another story, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man who put good seed in his field: | Another parable he proposed to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seeds in his field. | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field, |
Matthew 13:25 | But while men were sleeping, one who had hate for him came and put evil seeds among the grain, and went away. | But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way. | but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away. |
Matthew 13:26 | But when the green stem came up and gave fruit, the evil plants were seen at the same time. | And when the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared also the cockle. | But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also. |
Matthew 13:27 | And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Sir, did you not put good seed in your field? how then has it evil plants? | And the servants of the goodman of the house coming said to him: Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? whence then hath it cockle? | "So the farmer's men come and ask him, "`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?' |
Matthew 13:28 | And he said, Someone has done this in hate. And the servants say to him, Is it your pleasure that we go and take them up? | And he said to them: An enemy hath done this. And the servants said to him: Wilt thou that we go and gather it up? | "`Some enemy has done this,' he said. "`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire. |
Matthew 13:29 | But he says, No, for fear that by chance while you take up the evil plants, you may be rooting up the grain with them. | And he said: No, lest perhaps gathering up the cockle, you root up the wheat also together with it. | "`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it. |
Matthew 13:30 | Let them come up together till the getting in of the grain; and then I will say to the workers, Take up first the evil plants, and put them together for burning: but put the grain into my store-house. | Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn. | Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'" |
Matthew 13:31 | He put another story before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his field: | Another parable he proposed unto them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground. |
Matthew 13:32 | Which is smaller than all seeds; but when it has come up it is greater than the plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and make their resting-places in its branches. | Which is the least indeed of all seeds; but when it is grown up, it is greater than all herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come, and dwell in the branches thereof. | It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches." |
Matthew 13:33 | Another story he gave to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and put in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened. | Another parable he spoke to them: The kingdom of heaven is like to leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, until the whole was leavened. | Another parable He spoke to them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen." |
Matthew 13:34 | All these things Jesus said to the people in the form of stories; and without a story he said nothing to them: | All these things Jesus spoke in parables to the multitudes: and without parables he did not speak to them. | All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them, |
Matthew 13:35 | That it might come true which was said by the prophet, Opening my mouth, I will give out stories; I will give knowledge of things kept secret from before all time. | That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world. | in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, "I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things." |
Matthew 13:36 | Then he went away from the people, and went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Make clear to us the story of the evil plants in the field. | Then having sent away the multitudes, he came into the house, and his disciples came to him, saying: Expound to us the parable of the cockle of the field. | When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field." |
Matthew 13:37 | And he made answer and said, He who puts the good seed in the earth is the Son of man; | Who made answer and said to them: He that soweth the good seed, is the Son of man. | "The sower of the good seed," He replied, "is the Son of Man; |
Matthew 13:38 | And the field is the world; and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom; and the evil seeds are the sons of the Evil One; | And the field, is the world. And the good seed are the children of the kingdom. And the cockle, are the children of the wicked one. | the field is the world; the good seed these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one. |
Matthew 13:39 | And he who put them in the earth is Satan; and the getting in of the grain is the end of the world; and those who get it in are the angels. | And the enemy that sowed them, is the devil. But the harvest is the end of the world. And the reapers are the angels. | The enemy who sows the darnel is *the Devil*; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels. |
Matthew 13:40 | As then the evil plants are got together and burned with fire, so will it be in the end of the world. | Even as cockle therefore is gathered up, and burnt with fire: so shall it be at the end of the world. | As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age. |
Matthew 13:41 | The Son of man will send out his angels, and they will take out of his kingdom everything which is a cause of error, and all those who do wrong, | The Son of man shall send his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all scandals, and them that work iniquity. | The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws; |
Matthew 13:42 | And will put them into the fire; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. | and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:43 | Then will the upright be shining as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him give ear. | Then shall the just shine as the sun, in the kingdom of their Father. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. | Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears! |
Matthew 13:44 | The kingdom of heaven is like a secret store of wealth in a field, which a man came across and put back again; and in his joy he goes and gives all he has, to get that field. | The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. | "The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground. |
Matthew 13:45 | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader searching for beautiful jewels. | Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls. | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls. |
Matthew 13:46 | And having come across one jewel of great price, he went and gave all he had in exchange for it. | Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it. | He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it. |
Matthew 13:47 | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, which was put into the sea and took in every sort of fish: | Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes. | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts. |
Matthew 13:48 | When it was full, they took it up on the sands; and seated there they put the good into vessels, but the bad they put away. | Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth. | When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away. |
Matthew 13:49 | So will it be in the end of the world: the angels will come and take out the bad from the good, | So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just. | So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous, |
Matthew 13:50 | And will put them into the fire: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. | and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth." |
Matthew 13:51 | Are all these things now clear to you? They say to him, Yes. | Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes. | "Have you understood all this?" He asked. "Yes," they said. |
Matthew 13:52 | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house, who gives out from his store things new and old. | He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old. | "Therefore," He said, "remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old." |
Matthew 13:53 | And when Jesus had come to the end of these stories he went away from there. | And it came to pass: when Jesus had finished these parables, he passed from thence. | Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed. |
Matthew 13:54 | And coming into his country, he gave them teaching in their Synagogue, so that they were greatly surprised and said, Where did this man get this wisdom and these works of power? | And coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogues, so that they wondered and said: How came this man by this wisdom and miracles? | And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, "Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers? |
Matthew 13:55 | Is not this the woodworker's son? is not his mother named Mary? and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Jude: | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah? |
Matthew 13:56 | And his sisters, are they not all with us? from where, then, has he all these things? | And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence therefore hath he all these things? | And his sisters are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?" |
Matthew 13:57 | And they were bitter against him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour but in his country and among his family. | And they were scandalized in his regard. But Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. | So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, "There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family." |
Matthew 13:58 | And the works of power which he did there were small in number because they had no faith. | And he wrought not many miracles there, because of their unbelief. | And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith. |
