Matthew 27:1 | Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death. | And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put him to death. | When morning came all the High Priests and the Elders of the people consulted together against Jesus to put Him to death; |
Matthew 27:2 | And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler. | And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. | and binding Him they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the Governor. |
Matthew 27:3 | Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority, | Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients, | Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, smitten with remorse he brought back the thirty shekels to the High Priests and Elders |
Matthew 27:4 | Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business. | Saying: I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is that to us? look thou to it. | and said, "I have sinned, in betraying to death one who is innocent." "What does that matter to us?" they replied; it is your business." |
Matthew 27:5 | And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging. | And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed: and went and hanged himself with an halter. | Flinging the shekels into the Sanctuary he left the place, and went and hanged himself. |
Matthew 27:6 | And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood. | But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood. | When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, "It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood." |
Matthew 27:7 | And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries. | And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter's field, to be a burying place for strangers. | So after consulting together they spent the money in the purchase of the Potter's Field as a burial place for people not belonging to the city; |
Matthew 27:8 | For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day. | For this cause the field was called Haceldama, that is, The field of blood, even to this day. | for which reason that piece of ground received the name, which it still bears, of `the Field of Blood.' |
Matthew 27:9 | Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel; | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel. | Then were fulfilled the words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, "And I took the thirty shekels, the price of the prized one on whom Israelites had set a price, |
Matthew 27:10 | And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord. | And they gave them unto the potter's field, as the Lord appointed to me. | and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me." |
Matthew 27:11 | And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so. | And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest it. | Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Governor, and the latter put the question, "Are you the King of the Jews?" "I am their King," He answered. |
Matthew 27:12 | But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer. | And when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing. | When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply. |
Matthew 27:13 | Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you? | Then Pilate saith to him: Dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee? | "Do you not hear," asked Pilate, "what a mass of evidence they are bringing against you?" |
Matthew 27:14 | And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised. | And he answered him to never a word; so that the governor wondered exceedingly. | But He made no reply to a single accusation, so that the Governor was greatly astonished. |
Matthew 27:15 | Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection. | Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would. | "Now it was the Governor's custom at the Festival to release some one prisoner, whomsoever the populace desired; |
Matthew 27:16 | And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas. | And he had then a notorious prisoner, that was called Barabbas. | and at this time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. |
Matthew 27:17 | So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ? | They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: Whom will you that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ? | So when they were now assembled Pilate appealed to them. "Whom shall I release to you," he said, "Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?" |
Matthew 27:18 | For he saw that for envy they had given him up. | For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. | For he knew that it was from envious hatred that Jesus had been brought before him. |
Matthew 27:19 | And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him. | And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. | While he was sitting on the tribunal a message came to him from his wife. "Have nothing to do with that innocent man," she said, "for during the night I have suffered terribly in a dream through him." |
Matthew 27:20 | Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death. | But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people, that they should ask Barabbas, and make Jesus away. | The High Priests, however, and the Elders urged the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to demand the death of Jesus. |
Matthew 27:21 | But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas. | And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said, Barabbas. | So when the Governor a second time asked them, "Which of the two shall I release to you?" they cried, "Barabbas!" |
Matthew 27:22 | Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross. | Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified. | "What then," said Pilate, "shall I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?" With one voice they shouted, "Let him be crucified!" |
Matthew 27:23 | And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him! | The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified. | "Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they kept on furiously shouting, "Let him be crucified!" |
Matthew 27:24 | So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible. | And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it. | So when he saw that he could gain nothing, but that on the contrary there was a riot threatening, he called for water and washed his hands in sight of them all, saying, "I am not responsible for this murder: you must answer for it." |
Matthew 27:25 | And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children. | And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us and our children. | "His blood," replied all the people, "be on us and on our children!" |
Matthew 27:26 | Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross. | Then he released to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him unto them to be crucified. | Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he ordered to be scourged, and gave Him up to be crucified. |
Matthew 27:27 | Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together. | Then the soldiers of the governor taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band; | Then the Governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and called together the whole battalion to make sport of Him. |

Matthew 27:29 | And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews. | And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews. | They twisted a wreath of thorny twigs and put it on His head, and they put a sceptre of cane in His right hand, and kneeling to Him they shouted in mockery, "Long live the King of the Jews!" |
Matthew 27:30 | And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod. | And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and struck his head. | Then they spat upon Him, and taking the cane they repeatedly struck Him on the head with it. |
Matthew 27:31 | And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross. | And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him. | At last, having finished their sport, they took off the cloak, clothed Him again in His own garments, and led Him away for crucifixion. |
Matthew 27:32 | And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross. | And going out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon: him they forced to take up his cross. | Going out they met a Cyrenaean named Simon; whom they compelled to carry His cross, |
Matthew 27:33 | And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head, | And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary. | and so they came to a place called Golgotha, which means `Skull-ground.' |
Matthew 27:34 | They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more. | And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink. | Here they gave Him a mixture of wine and gall to drink, but having tasted it He refused to drink it. |
Matthew 27:35 | And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance. | And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots. | After crucifying Him, they divided His garments among them by lot, |
Matthew 27:36 | And they were seated there watching him. | And they sat and watched him. | and sat down there on guard. |
Matthew 27:37 | And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. | And they put over his head his cause written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. | Over His head they placed a written statement of the charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
Matthew 27:38 | Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left. | Then were crucified with him two thieves: one on the right hand, and one on the left. | At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one at His right hand and the other at His left. |

If you are God's Son, come down from the cross." |
Matthew 27:41 | In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said, | In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said: | In like manner the High Priests also, together with the Scribes and the Elders, taunted Him. |
Matthew 27:42 | A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him. | He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. | "He saved others," they said, "himself he cannot save! He is the King of Israel! Let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him. |
Matthew 27:43 | He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God. | He trusted in God; let him now deliver him if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God. | His trust is in God: let God deliver him now, if He will have him; for he said, `I am God's Son.'" |
Matthew 27:44 | And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him. | And the selfsame thing the thieves also, that were crucified with him, reproached him with. | Insults of the same kind were heaped on Him even by the robbers who were being crucified with Him. |
Matthew 27:45 | Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour. | Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour. | Now from noon until three o'clock in the afternoon there was darkness over the whole land; |
Matthew 27:46 | And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me? | And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? | but about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is to say, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?" |
Matthew 27:47 | And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah. | And some that stood there and heard, said: This man calleth Elias. | "The man is calling for Elijah," said some of the bystanders. |
Matthew 27:48 | And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink. | And immediately one of them running took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar; and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. | One of them ran forthwith, and filling a sponge with sour wine put it on the end of a cane and offered it Him to drink; |
Matthew 27:49 | And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help. | And the others said: Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him. | while the rest said, "Let us see whether Elijah is coming to deliver him." |
Matthew 27:50 | And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit. | And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. | But Jesus uttered another loud cry and then yielded up His spirit. |

Matthew 27:52 | And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life; | And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose, | the tombs opened; and many of God's people who were asleep in death awoke. |
Matthew 27:53 | And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people. | And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many. | And coming out of their tombs after Christ's resurrection they entered the holy city and showed themselves to many. |
Matthew 27:54 | Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God. | Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were sore afraid, saying: Indeed this was the Son of God. | As for the Captain and the soldiers who were with Him keeping guard over Jesus, when they witnessed the earthquake and the other occurrences they were filled with terror, and exclaimed, "Assuredly he was God's Son." |
Matthew 27:55 | And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs. | And there were there many women afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: | And there were a number of women there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to His necessities; |
Matthew 27:56 | Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. | Among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. | among them being Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zabdi. |

Matthew 27:58 | This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him. | He went to Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded that the body should be delivered. | He went to Pilate and begged to have the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be given to him. |
Matthew 27:59 | And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen, | And Joseph taking the body, wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth. | So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean sheet of fine linen. |

Matthew 27:63 | Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead. | Saying: Sir, we have remembered, that that seducer said, while he was yet alive: After three days I will rise again. | "Sir," they said, "we recollect that during his lifetime that impostor pretended that after two days he was to rise to life again. |
Matthew 27:64 | Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first. | Command therefore the sepulchre to be guarded until the third day: lest perhaps his disciples come and steal him away, and say to the people: He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first. | So give orders for the sepulchre to be securely guarded till the third day, for fear his disciples should come by night and steal the body, and then tell the people that he has come back to life; and so the last imposture will be more serious than the first." |
Matthew 27:65 | Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able. | Pilate saith to them: You have a guard; go, guard it as you know. | "You can have a guard," said Pilate: "go and make all safe, as best you can." |
