John 11:1Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister
John 11:2(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing
John 11:3So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;`
John 11:4When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.`
John 11:5Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,
John 11:6So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,
John 11:7Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;`
John 11:8The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!`
John 11:9Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;
John 11:10But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.`
John 11:11These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;`
John 11:12Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;`
John 11:13Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.
John 11:14Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;
John 11:15And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;`
John 11:16Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go we also, that we may die with him,`
John 11:17Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.
John 11:18Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,
John 11:19And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;
John 11:20When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.
John 11:21Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
John 11:22But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;`
John 11:23Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.`
John 11:24Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;`
John 11:25Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;
John 11:26And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die to the age;
John 11:27She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.believest thou this?` she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.`
John 11:28And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;`
John 11:29And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;
John 11:30Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;
John 11:31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.`
John 11:32When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;`
John 11:33And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,
John 11:34And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.`Where have ye laid him?` they say to him, `Sir, come and see;`
John 11:35And Jesus himself was weeping.And Jesus wept.Jesus wept.
John 11:36So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!`
John 11:37But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?`
John 11:38So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,
John 11:39Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;` the sister of him who hath died Martha saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;`
John 11:40Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?`
John 11:41So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;
John 11:42I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said [it], that they may believe that Thou didst send me.`
John 11:43Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;`
John 11:44And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.`
John 11:45Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;
John 11:46But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;
John 11:47Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?
John 11:48If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.`
John 11:49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,
John 11:50You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.`
John 11:51He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,
John 11:52And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.
John 11:53And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;
John 11:54So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.
John 11:55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;
John 11:56They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you that he may not come to the feast?`
John 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew [it], so that they may seize him.
