Hebrews 7:1For this Melchizedek, the king of Salem, a priest of the Most High God, who gave Abraham his blessing, meeting him when he came back after putting the kings to death,For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; For this Melchisedec, King of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from smiting the kings, and blessed him;
Hebrews 7:2And to whom Abraham gave a tenth part of everything which he had, being first named King of righteousness, and then in addition, King of Salem, that is to say, King of peace;To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; to whom Abraham gave also the tenth portion of all; first being interpreted King of righteousness, and then also King of Salem, which is King of peace;
Hebrews 7:3Being without father or mother, or family, having no birth or end to his life, being made like the Son of God, is a priest for ever.Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. without father, without mother, without genealogy; having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but assimilated to the Son of God, abides a priest continually.
Hebrews 7:4Now see how great this man was, to whom our father Abraham gave a tenth part of what he had got in the fight.Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. Now consider how great this [personage] was, to whom [even] the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth out of the spoils.
Hebrews 7:5And it is true that by the law, those of the sons of Levi who have the position of priests may take a tenth part of the people's goods; that is to say, they take it from their brothers though these are the sons of Abraham.And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: And they indeed from among the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have commandment to take tithes from the people according to the law, that is from their brethren, though these are come out of the loins of Abraham:
Hebrews 7:6But this man, who was not of their family, took the tenth from Abraham, and gave a blessing to him to whom God had given his undertaking.But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. but he who has no genealogy from them has tithed Abraham, and blessed him who had the promises.
Hebrews 7:7But there is no doubt that the less gets his blessing from the greater.And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. But beyond all gainsaying, the inferior is blessed by the better.
Hebrews 7:8Now at the present time, men over whom death has power take the tenth; but then it was taken by one of whom it is witnessed that he is living.And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And here dying men receive tithes; but there [one] of whom the witness is that he lives;
Hebrews 7:9And we may say that in Abraham, even Levi, who has a right to take the tenth part, gave it;And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. and, so to speak, through Abraham, Levi also, who received tithes, has been made to pay tithes.
Hebrews 7:10Because he was still in his father's body when Melchizedek came to him.For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. For he was yet in the loins of his father when Melchisedec met him.
Hebrews 7:11Now if it was possible for things to be made complete through the priests of the house of Levi (for the law was given to the people in connection with them), what need was there for another priest who was of the order of Melchizedek and not of the order of Aaron?If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? If indeed then perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, for the people had their law given to them in connexion with *it*, what need [was there] still that a different priest should arise according to the order of Melchisedec, and not be named after the order of Aaron?
Hebrews 7:12Because if the priests are changed, it is necessary to make a change in the law.For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. For, the priesthood being changed, there takes place of necessity a change of law also.
Hebrews 7:13For he of whom these things are said comes of another tribe, of which no man has ever made offerings at the altar.For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. For he, of whom these things are said, belongs to a different tribe, of which no one has [ever] been attached to the service of the altar.
Hebrews 7:14Because it is clear that our Lord comes out of Judah, and Moses said nothing about priests from that tribe.For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. For it is clear that our Lord has sprung out of Juda, as to which tribe Moses spake nothing as to priests.
Hebrews 7:15And this is even more clear if a second priest has come up who is like Melchizedek,And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, And it is yet more abundantly evident, since a different priest arises according to the similitude of Melchisedec,
Hebrews 7:16That is to say, not made by a law based on the flesh, but by the power of a life without end:Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. who has been constituted not according to law of fleshly commandment, but according to power of indissoluble life.
Hebrews 7:17For it has been witnessed of him, You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. For it is borne witness, *Thou* art a priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews 7:18So the law which went before is put on one side, because it was feeble and without profit.For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For there is a setting aside of the commandment going before for its weakness and unprofitableness,
Hebrews 7:19(Because the law made nothing complete), and in its place there is a better hope, through which we come near to God.For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. (for the law perfected nothing,) and the introduction of a better hope by which we draw nigh to God.
Hebrews 7:20And as this is not without the taking of an oathAnd inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: And by how much [it was] not without the swearing of an oath;
Hebrews 7:21(For those were made priests without an oath, but this one was made a priest with an oath by him who says of him, The Lord gave his oath, which he will not take back, that you are a priest for ever);(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) (for they are become priests without the swearing of an oath, but he with the swearing of an oath, by him who said, as to him, The Lord has sworn, and will not repent [of it], *Thou* [art] priest for ever [according to the order of Melchisedec];)
Hebrews 7:22By so much is it a better agreement which we have through Jesus.By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. by so much Jesus became surety of a better covenant.
Hebrews 7:23And it is true that there have been a great number of those priests, because death does not let them go on for ever;And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: And they have been many priests, on account of being hindered from continuing by death;
Hebrews 7:24But this priest, because his life goes on for ever, is unchanging.But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. but he, because of his continuing for ever, has the priesthood unchangeable.
Hebrews 7:25So that he is fully able to be the saviour of all who come to God through him, because he is ever living to make prayer to God for them.Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Whence also he is able to save completely those who approach by him to God, always living to intercede for them.
Hebrews 7:26It was right for us to have such a high priest, one who is holy and without evil, doing no wrong, having no part with sinners, and made higher than the heavens:For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; For such a high priest became us, holy, harmless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and become higher than the heavens:
Hebrews 7:27Who has no need to make offerings for sins every day, like those high priests, first for himself, and then for the people; because he did this once and for ever when he made an offering of himself.Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. who has not day by day need, as the high priests, first to offer up sacrifices for his own sins, then [for] those of the people; for this he did once for all [in] having offered up himself.
Hebrews 7:28The law makes high priests of men who are feeble; but the word of the oath, which was made after the law, gives that position to a Son, in whom all good is for ever complete.For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. For the law constitutes men high priests, having infirmity; but the word of the swearing of the oath which [is] after the law, a Son perfected for ever.
