John 11:1Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Now a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
John 11:2(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) (It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.)
John 11:3So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill."
John 11:4When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it."
John 11:5Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
John 11:6So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place.
John 11:7Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea."
John 11:8The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? "Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?"
John 11:9Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. "Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.
John 11:10But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."
John 11:11These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him."
John 11:12Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. "Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover."
John 11:13Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep.
John 11:14Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. So then He told them plainly,
John 11:15And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. "Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him."
John 11:16Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. "Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him."
John 11:17Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb.
John 11:18Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles;
John 11:19And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother.
John 11:20When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house.
John 11:21Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died.
John 11:22But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you."
John 11:23Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. "Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus.
John 11:24Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. "I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day."
John 11:25Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: "I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live;
John 11:26And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?"
John 11:27She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. "Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."
John 11:28And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you."
John 11:29And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him.
John 11:30Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.
John 11:31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there.
John 11:32When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
John 11:33And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit,
John 11:34And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply.
John 11:35And Jesus himself was weeping.Jesus wept. Jesus wept.
John 11:36So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! "See how dear he held him," said the Jews.
John 11:37But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?"
John 11:38So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it.
John 11:39Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. "Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died."
John 11:40Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? "Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?"
John 11:41So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me.
John 11:42I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this that they may believe that Thou didst send me."
John 11:43Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."
John 11:44And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free."
John 11:45Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds became believers in Him;
John 11:46But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done.
John 11:47Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles.
John 11:48If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation."
John 11:49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it.
John 11:50You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish."
John 11:51He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation,
John 11:52And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God.
John 11:53And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death.
John 11:54So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples.
John 11:55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
John 11:56They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? will he come to the Festival at all?"
John 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him.
